Maybe I'm missing some backstory, but I don't see the relevance of this to the rest of the thread.

It all started a long time ago when Adam and Steve were in the garden of Edan telling gay jokes about a snake, an apple and something forbiddin, you had to be there.

what we need to do is drop some anti-personel bombs in areas that are into terrorists actions and make a public statement that this is the new polisy of America...no need to send our people over there to die when it's not neccessary

Nearly every bomb is going to be anti-personnel--really  can't concieve of a use for them other than that, sure, blow up buildings but think about it.

america has made several statements throughout the years.....but that doesn't seem to  carry the weight of action.

The  remote war concept has pretty much run its course, the concept has been bandied about by such as Jules Verne, but was monitarily realized in the Reagan Administration and as brought to fruition as a subset of the starwars concept....has proven to be way ahead of its time in that in the real world, we need to concern ourselves with the inconveniences of people dying, babies frying, insurgence and and the day to day operation of human life.......While other threads here exist that discuss the pros and cons of microchipping the sex offenders or whatever, this platitudinal and rather reckless (which is why we are here today) fuck 'em, throw the bomb at 'em....cliche is of no help,  nor is it even worthy of consideration.

Say if by some enourmous fluke you became President of the United States in 2008.
What would you do?
What would you change, what would you keep?

OK, since this is just in fun ...

No taxes on income under 35K per year
over 35K up to 75K taxed flat at 10%
over 75K up to 135K taxed flat at 15%
over 135k taxed flat at 20%

There would be exemptions for married, kids, childcare etc.

Anyone teaching grades k-12 would be tax exempt through the first 50K of income.

Anyone can be married to anyone else as long as they are human and polygamy would be legalized.

Institute 3 strikes exile law. 3 strikes (felonies), you're not in prison for the rest of your life, you're out of the country. Don't care where ya go, what you do, but ya can't come back here. I hear there's plenty of land to be had near both the poles so a plane ticket and a parachute outta work. I'd pay for programs, in part, with all the money we'll save not having low-life, convicted, felons being supported by tax payer dollars until they die.

Presidents will serve one term of 5 years so they can get the job done and not worry about reelection mid-way through their first term trying to keep the damn job. Same holds true for reps and senators, one 5 year term, then get your ass back to civilian life. Too many career politicians out there who only worry about keeping their jobs. The Supreme court would not be the job for life either.. 5 years on the bench, then get some new blood in there and they can be elected just like everyone else. No need to be appointed by the prez. Civil service should be just that.. service.. not a fucking job with pork and perks being the key words.

Get the hell out of Iraq and start to bring our men and women home. The first 50K of income after service is tax exempt - for each year served in the military, you get an equivalent number of years of tax exempt status up to 5 years.

I'm sure there are many other things, but I'll make this the last one for now...

I'd legalize consentual slavery by allowing anyone to waive their constitutional rights. Oh wait, we can already do that, can't we? ;)

Celeste

I'd eliminate all personal income taxes, in favor of a tax on consumption. So, sales taxes would replace taxes.  Food, and property would be tax exempt. This would encourage savings and being frugal to a greater extent as currently you are taxed regardless of the items you buy.

As far as corporate taxes, would implement a flat 10% tax on sales revenue(not profit). The primary reason for this is the way multi-nationals hide their profits in foreign tax haven countries. Basicly they set up shop in a low tax country then sell at a very high price to the US subsidiary. It is virtually impossible for the IRS to rectify this because the compaies in question submit millions of invoices they process. So the IRS is almost powerless to properly tax them and it costs millions and little is collected when they do find something.  The US based portion of the company then reports a loss or artificially low profit, while the Company based in the low tax country makes huge profits and pays much lower taxes. So, you would at least collect something from the big multinationals. I'd would be in favor of not charging taxes on corporation that have less than 500000 in revenue per year.

First day in office would pardon everyone in prison that was solely put their because of pot related offenses, and pardon all once a month until I was out of office or got the law changed.

Would push for a 100% mandatory video recording installed in police vehicles and GPS / speed monitoring of all law enforcement vehicles.

Would push for a mandatory paper trail be produced in every election. You vote you get a receipt and the polling place gets a receipt that can be compared to the recorded vote.

Would push for a return to the Gold standard and elimination of the central bank.

Would personally visit Iran, Syria, Pakistan, etc.. and try in earnest to work out some kind of permanent peace, and allow a eventual withdrawal from the middle east while securing oil for at least a 15 year period. If not possible then, would hold Iraq, but it wouldn't be pretty.

If could work that out, would start closing bases all over the world, shut the border down. Give a  one year period in which all illegals must either register in the U.S. for permission to remain on a temporary worker basis, or return to their homeland where they would be expected to submit a application for permission to enter and work in the country. After the one year period and the streamlined entry process was established would be punishable by 3 month imprisonment at a work camp for violators after which you would be dropped back off in your home country were you could legally apply without any bias placed against you. Second offense 1 year in work camp, permanent revocation of entry rights. Third offense 5 years in work camp. You'd have to be stupid or a criminal not to fill out the paper work.

Would total overhaul the disability policy this country uses. I've seen so many people on disability that could work at 100's of jobs without harming their disability it's ridiculous. Sorry, no free rides, or very few.

Would begin to withdraw most if not all foreign aid, to me it's the choice of the individual citizen as to who their tax dollars support, charity would be encouraged but would no longer be mandatory.

Would add a special tax on all conventional vehicles and gas to finance grants for alternative energy research or installations.

I could write a book, so will just stop there. LOL.

I would start with the things I control, since I wasn't elected Empress.

Assuming I was a President elected from the Democratic Party, my cabinet would be equally comprised of people from my political party, the Republican Party, and those considering themselves Independents. As a matter of fact, if I was a moderate Democrat runnng for President, I would select a moderate Republican as my running mate.

This would serve to add more than lip-service to the notion of working together to solve our problems.

i think i would reorganize the House and Senate into one unit, let each state keep a representative to bring state needs to my attention,  audit the rich, forclose on whatever countries owes us money and make the UN fully responsible for world affairs...America's been policing this planet long enough. time for someone else to take the responsibility.

- Take away the taxcuts from the rich.  Why should they get taxcuts too?  The greedy rich might have an education and/or work 60 hours a week at their business, but that doesn't mean that they contribute more to society than the poor oppressed people on "social assistance".  By taking away the taxcuts from the rich, I would then raise the "social assistance" rates so these poor victims of society would get their dignity back.

- Bring in public healthcare (don't call it socialist healthcare, please).  No longer will the US be subjected to Europe's and Canada's incessant finger-wagging "13% of Americans don't have health insurance."  Sure, nearly all of those 13% are under 30 years old...but I know when I was 22 years old, I chewed my fingernails down to the bone from constantly fretting about my health.  Public healthcare has worked splendid in Canada.  The greedy rich are forbidden by law to get their healthcare when they want it.  They are put on a waitlist along with the disadvantaged--like the poor people on welfare who are oppressed by the rich.  The waitlists are kinda long, but believe me, you appreciate it more when you are healed after being in pain for 17 months.  And if the greedy rich complain, we just tell them to go down to the US to get healed.  Then they have to pay twice - once thru taxes and again in the US - and it loosens up the long waitlists.  Ha Ha!  The stupid morons.  That'll teach them with their non-progressive "personal responsibility" and "work hard" conservative so-called "values".

- I'd make the public healthcare 100% unionized so all can make A Living Wage™.  I would also make their work week 35 hours just like France.  The US must seek France's approval.

- I would make it impossible for an employer to fire an employee.  This is what they do in France and the US must emulate their intellectual superiors in Europe.  Just because the person you hired turned out to be an alcoholic who - when they do show up for work - shows up late with a hangover, it doesn't give you the right to fire this person.  These greedy employers should show compassion instead of worrying about silly things like "profit" and giving customers so-called "value for their money".  That ain't progressive!

- I'd raise the minimum wage to $15/hr so the poor oppressed teenage kids working at McDonalds can make A Living Wage™.

- The torturing, war criminal, women-and-children terrorizing, Koran-mishandling, and most of all, uneducated troops, will get the RoboCop-like body armor we are always shrieking about.  Sure it might effect their mobility, but so what?  Most of them are neocons anyway who are participating in this illegal and immoral war--except for the poor oppressed minorities who are forced to go into the military by the Bush Regime's white male hegemony.

Oops!  I thought I was posting at the DemocraticUnderground.  Sorry...I was drinking the moonbat Kool-Aid this morning.

It appears that you are suggesting that it is ok for the schools to beat children but not parents.
Eye for an eye goes back to the code of Hamarabi and it does not call for the removal of ones eye if you are responsible for the loss of another persons eye.  It calls for you to compensate the injured party to an extent equal to the loss of their eye.
Fresh grass is always nice but most of us perfer it to be cured and dried.

Best joke I've read in months. LMAO. Thanks for the laugh. LOL, employers can't fire useless drunken employees that don't show up to work.  Priceless. Funny stuff. So employers would be social workers. LOL. Can you write more of this, I can't stop laughing.

1.Evict the UN to Hatti, let them handle that problem by providing the jobs and economic boost.
Let them rove they can solve the problems of half an island before having any faith they can agree on WTF the world needs to do.

2. Attempt to get The Fair Tax Bill passed

3. Failing that make all insurance premiums deductable pre tax expenses. Not just those made by the employers. Decreases the uninsured to a level that is more easily managed.

4. Frivolous Lawsuit aw Looser pays sstem File a suit that has no merit and you have to pay the legal costs of both sides.

5. limit medical malpractice awards to real costs and punaive only when actual willing negligence can be proven. ( and have those punative awards only come from personal wealth and assets not insurance.)

6. Rework the immigration quotas to include the jobs filled by illegal's today and privatize the business of applications all offices being required to be in other countries.(cant fill out an application in the US, must be stamped with countries customs stamp forces them to leave the country to get it filled out) (Business liable for negligence in application background checks for criminal record etc.)

7.Hienlen like voting/ citizenship requirements

8. Unemployment disolved Government employment/ retraining programs similar to the old CCC blended with a training program for jobs that have a flippin future. (ie you get 6 months and after that if you're not working you come work for the government cleaning parks and highways, maintaining trails during the days and going to classes at night.)

9. Replace all marriage liscenses with civil union liscenses, give marriage back to th churches to decide provide civil union rights to all people, regardless of number or gender.

10. Failure to prepare your children for reality becomes child neglect crime. (Life aint fair, you work for what you get, all your decissions have consequences...)

11. School voucher program eliminating most government schools, convert them to private/ semi private, Special needs education becomes the only government direct education. Schools will spring up to fill the needs as thers close, too much money to be had to leave it sitting on the table.

Before doing something the first question I'd be asking is; "Is it good for America?"
Not "is it good for big business, foreign countries, etc.

I've been turning this over in my mind ... the only scenario I can concieve of in which I could ever POSSIBLY become president would be some freakish accident in which EVERY OTHER PERSON ON EARTH were to disappear and leave me with the keys.

If that happened, then I would have to disband the US government altogether, declare myself "Emporer and Dicator for Life" and rename the country "fergania".

And hope each day that I didn't break my glasses JUST while reaching for that first book I suddenly now had the time to read.

fergus, longshot, eh?
It would have to be very freakish for most people.
If I were President a lot of foreigners and foreign countries wouldn't like me but a lot of Americans would. Not all.
