Until I moved to college and was away from it for awhile.  Now, I can't stand being in a moderate smoke environment for very long at all- I get serious headaches/migraines, I get nauseous and tear up.

I don't like it because it means I can't spend much time in my old home anymore, and I certainly didn't want it or even become aware of the connection until it happened quite a few times in a few different arenas.

So please, with all your other arguments, don't make one as empty as that one.

It's kind of funny that you say this LA. i was raised around smoke like you describe, i smoke now, and obviously have no problem with it. my oldest daughter (now 31) was raised around smoke like you describe and even smoked for about a year when she was a teen but decided she didn't like it.

She then went away to college and same as you, when she came back, her tolerance for smoke had diminished significantly, Even now, she can tolerate smoke in small doses but after any length of time, her nose gets stuffed up and her eyes tear....almost like she's developed an allergy to it.

It did seem weird at first, given her years of non-problematic exposure to it....but that is the way it went. i guess i shouldn't be too surprised though because i've seen others develop allergies even later in life to things they've been exposed to all of their lives. So go figure  [8|]     i guess it is what it is.

If the college buildings were modern air-conditioned building, this could have an effect. It is widely recognized now, at least here, that modern air-conditioned building cause asthma, and allergies causing breathing problems as well as head aches which have a lasting effect. There are several theories for this but none conclusively proved.

There was AC available, but not modern at all.

I can tell you I don't have asthma or any other breathing problems- which is I think part of why it took me so long to figure out the connection.

I do have allergies, which began when I was about 12 and they are mild, based solely on pollen, and is pretty much identical to what all my relatives on my mothers side have experienced.

Although I have to say I wouldn't be surprised if spending a large portion of one's time in a modern central air type building lowers one's immunity to pollen/dust/general crap in the air.  I do think we've gone too far in the antibioticizing/antibacterializing every surface and constantly cleaning way which HAS caused people to not develop their immune systems very strongly.

But the argument that if you can't stand cigarette smoke then you weren't exposed to it at a younger age is not only completely false, it's also irrelevant- building your body's immunity to fight off infections is good, equating that to carcinogenic cigarette smoke is completely off base.

Well i work in a modern air-conditioned building and i hate it!  First of all, the air is very dry in there....and it's never fresh...just recirculated.  It smells really stale  [:'(]

Anyhoo...my daughter was living with a non smoker there and eventually moved in with her fiance, who was also a non smoker.  i just figured her body had adjusted to that and was just 'rejecting' the smoke after that.  i don't know....but it was weird.

BTW....she used to go to smoking bars then too (because that's all there was back then).  She would stay until she couldn't take it any longer....lol.

That is often how it works with allergies.

poor little old me because you wont let me light a coffin nail while you are
eating or drinking or dancing or trying to breathe smoke-free air."

You are being disingenuous here. Nobody as far has I can recollect as argued against people's right to breath smoke free air. The argument has been that there should be a right for bars where people can smoke if the owner is willing to allow it.

No one has said 'poor me, I'm an addict and I can't control myself.' I don't need you or anyone else to save me from myself. What I would like to be saved from is cancerous puritanism and political correctness.

I am in that bar.  I want to breathe smoke free air.

Please dont come back with the idiotic idea that I could go to a different bar where smoking is not allowed, since the law basically stipulates that people should go smoke somewhere where their smoke will not offend other people.  You want to smoke.  Stay home and smoke.  Or keep your smoke in a baggie around your head so I dont have to breath it.

The other issue is that all of the employees in the bar are being subjected to your smoke.  They dont have a choice.  They work there.

I dont care what you do.  But making me breathe your smoke is a non-consensual kink you are inflicting on the rest of us.  It is rather shocking to me that people in this lifestyle would be so up in arms about non-consensually inflicting their proclivities on people who may not be in to the same thing.

Just me, etc.

I am so glad I am a longshoreman.

I work outside all day long in the sun (skin cancer), driving heavy equipment (diesel particulate (lung cancer)), expressing my morpheme (learning poor social skills), and picking up huge things and moving them over there (hearing damage).  The ship idles all day long on bunker fuel (more diesel).  Some days I work on rail cars (slip and fall injuries), or drive a large tractor (back injuries), and sometimes lash (falling iron bars), signal large cranes (outside truckers running me over) or unload passenger ships (diseases from abroad).

I would hate to work in an office building and be subjected to the dangers of building conditioned air.

Thanks for confirming that people like you just want to be dictatorial about what you want whether you frequent a place or not. You want to impose your view on everyone. The clean air issue is bollocks because you just have to stand on a street corner and breath in the traffic fumes, which create more asthmas in children than tabacco smoke and there is no stink about it. Smokers who go to a bar that allows smoking are not inflicting any noxious fumes on you unless you go into an establishment where there is smoke. Though I'm sure you would just to make a scene and piss people off.

The other issue is that all of the employees in the bar are being subjected to your smoke.  They dont have a choice.  They work there.

Bollocks. They do have a choice. Though the bar I frequent the owner won't employ a none smoker so there is not an issue there. You wouldn't say about any other job, that people don't have a choice. I've never heard people worrying about people who HAVE to work in mines and steelworks where they have to breath in noxious substances. Where are all these liberals dancing on hot coals over that issue?

I dont care what you do.  But making me breathe your smoke is a non-consensual kink you are inflicting on the rest of us.  It is rather shocking to me that people in this lifestyle would be so up in arms about non-consensually inflicting their proclivities on people who may not be in to the same thing.

No one is making you breath anything. You don't have to go into a smoking establishment but as I said before, liberals like you would just to piss people off.

Just me but there you go

If you are dissatisfied, get another job.

Actually I've worked on the docks in Rotterdam. Fucking good money for the work.

It always fascinates me when I hear from people incapable of understanding the difference between sardonic attempts at humor and literal interpretations of what other people have written.

Its  just the same as achohol prohibition , and drug prohibition,

It wont work.

I've been and gone home. The place is far too anal. I guess that's why there are so many American refugees in Amsterdam, they love the tolerance and freedom of the place.

the smoking law i mean, Its an antiquated byproduct of 60"s liberalism, go after the movie stars and sports people that make millions.
tax them 90% would be fine, but ,leave the average people that want to have a smoke alone.

Brandy11 -> RE: RANT, a big one ! Feel free to join in. (11/15/2006 5:10:09 PM)

I like your thiiking in that one regard.
However , I want to stay and fight for my country, I have repeatedly reported illegals standing around or working on construction projects.
