http://pewresearch.org/social/pack.php?PackID=1
quote:

Some 45% of all Republicans report being very happy, compared with just 30% of Democrats and 29% of independents. This finding has also been around a long time; Republicans have been happier than Democrats every year since the General Social Survey began taking its measurements in 1972....

...Also, we should explain here a bit about how our survey questionnaire was constructed. The question about happiness was posed at the very beginning of the interview, while the question about political affiliation was posed at the back end, along with questions about demographic traits. So respondents were not cued to consider their happiness through the frame of partisan politics. This question is about happiness; it is not a question about happiness with partisan outcomes.

Of course, there's a more obvious explanation for the Republicans' happiness edge. Republicans tend to have more money than Democrats, and -- as we've already discovered -- people who have more money tend to be happier.

But even this explanation only goes so far. If one controls for household income, Republicans still hold a significant edge: that is, poor Republicans are happier than poor Democrats; middle-income Republicans are happier than middle-income Democrats, and rich Republicans are happier than rich Democrats.

Might ideology be the key? It's true that conservatives, who are more likely to be Republican, are happier than liberals, who are more likely to be Democrats. But even controlling for this ideological factor, a significant partisan gap remains. Conservative Republicans are happier than conservative Democrats, and moderate/liberal Republicans are happier than liberal Democrats. Hmmm, what other factors might be at play? Well, there's always...

Indeed, the gap widened even further when they broke both into 2 groups.

Very Happy:
Conservative Repubs--47%
Moderate/liberal Repubs--45%

Conserv/moderate Dems--31%
Liberal Dems--28%

34 years straight.  Any suggestions why?

I thought you red-state folk love simple, old-fashioned truisms...

Would you expect War and Peace, or a Brief History of Time in response to a facile and patronizing write by post?

Curiously,

He can post whatever he likes.  I simply made an observation about my opinion of his "drive by"..

If he had made it in humor or jest, I'd not responded to him at all.  It would have just been another one of thousands of "drive by" post, like so many others.

But, your observation that the OP was "facile and patronizing" doesn't hold up.  It's sourced, and from a well known and reputable research firm.

Don't be so condescending, LaM.

I think it has more to do with denial.

That, and wearing a white hood all the time has a way of brightening your mood.

I wonder if it has anything to do with religion?  More religious folk seem to be happier than those that are not for some reason.

You know, it was a witty and brilliant comment, but since you're brutishly forcing me to explain it, I will.

The more people learn about the world, the more they object to the status quo, and the more they object to the status quo, the less likely they are to be conservative.

Most conservative opposition to issues that matter is based on either ignorance of facts or unwillingness to confront facts.  Conservatives like to talk about how they "stand for" this or that value; all they "stand for" is to keep on fucking the environment and letting corporations get their way at taxpayers' expense.  It's a bankrupt ideology, and your party pundits are correct when they say that it's time for some new ideas.

Was that less facile for ya?

mnottertail -> RE: Why are conservatives happier than liberals? (11/13/2006 11:48:19 AM)

I read another poll by that same firm that said that increasing numbers of the republican party are unhappy with Mr. Bush.............

Ah, I just got a vision, it must be the illuminated liberal wing of the Grand Old Party...

As John Kennedy said, There should be some coordination of policy, because it seems to me that otherwise it may appear that the Grand Old Party may be floundering.

SK, I think that is part of it.

And I think to a degree what Lam said is true; some conservative folks "shelter" themselves, and that can act as a buffer against some of the horrors in the world.

But I also see many conservatives as being more positive, having a can do spirit.

mnottertail -> RE: Why are conservatives happier than liberals? (11/13/2006 11:58:02 AM)

Well as we survey the situations in the world about us, one that readily comes to mind is Iraq; and certainly the proverb 'The spirit is willing,  but the flesh is weak', appears to apply quite readily to the conservative outlook in that matter.

what type of conservative are you speaking of. There are lot's of different types of conservatives.

This is from wikipedia good enough for this.

American conservatism is a constellation of political ideologies within the United States under the blanket heading of conservative. Included are fiscal conservatives, free market or economic liberals, social conservatives,[1] and religious conservatives,[2][3] as well as supporters of a strong American military, opponents of internationalism,[4] and proponents of states' rights.[5]

If you are saying all conservative types are idiots well, that's sad for you. Bush wouldn't fulfill most of the conservative types like fiscal conservative, even the opponent of internationalism doesn't fit, or proponent of state's rights. I'm hard pressed to fit him into the definition of conservative, even though he claims it for votes and dirties the name, pretty much just fits with the religious conservatives, nothing else. Most conservatives I know say that because they are fiscal conservatives, opponents of internationalism and proponents of states rights, almost the opposite of Bush.

Anyway, ignorance is bliss.

No, Lam, it was an insulting and condescending comment, regardless of which "side" you are on. As for "brutishly" .... I think it would be a fair question of who was "brutish" so far in this discussion.

But, yes, your above explanation is less facile.  Not supported by anything except your own prejudices, but certainly less facile.

Let's look at your words from a possible alternative viewpoint (Note: I'm not necessarily condoning the alternate view, just showing you how "conservatives" may feel and react to your comments):

LaM:

The more people learn about the world, the more they object to the status quo, and the more they object to the status quo, the less likely they are to be conservative.

Alternate:

Since liberals understand less about the reality of the world, they see things in a false, idealistic way, and have loads of frustration when the world doesn't accord to their desires.

LaM:

Most conservative opposition to issues that matter is based on either ignorance of facts or unwillingness to confront facts.

Alternate:

Most liberal opposition to issues that matter is based on ignorance of facts and reality, or an unwillingness to confront facts.

LaM:

Conservatives like to talk about how they "stand for" this or that value; all they "stand for" is to keep on fucking the environment and letting corporations get their way at taxpayers' expense.

Alternate:

Liberals like to talk about how they are "open" and "nonjudgemental", but they are the first to insult and belittle anyone who doesn't share their fantasy view of the world.  They want to force everyone to see the world through their eyes, and force others to accept their beliefs by government edict, rather than in seeking ways to change the world while working with human nature.

LaM:

It's a bankrupt ideology, and your party pundits are correct when they say that it's time for some new ideas.

Alternate:

It's a bankrupt ideology, and your party pundits are correct when they say it's time for some new ideas.

conservatives in the last week seem to be much angrier than liberals ......

Well, I have to say that so far, I have only seen evidence that they blame themselves, so perhaps they laugh on the outside and cry on the inside, and this is where the confusion lays.
