Googling "pops" up the answer, but I don't want the win..... LOL!
Off to work. Y'all have fun.

DC is moderating this thread?

I for one liked poise's clues, and felt they all had something in common. My opinion.

Jeffff -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (8/13/2010 9:04:24 AM)

You can always trust DC!

igor2003 -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (8/13/2010 9:04:32 AM)

Interesting guess, but....no cigar.  And no, there are no hidden clues yet.

Castrato Singers singing Christmas Carols?

Castrato Singers singing Christmas Carols?

LOL...no, but that might be a better answer than the real one!

heartcream -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (8/13/2010 9:10:41 AM)

Okay I googled it and got the answer too. I am not sure how anyone would derive the answer without googling it though seeing what the answer is. I pass on the win too.

Well, as far as I know there are no actual rules against googling.  And you say that as though a list consisting of Pearls, Faberge Egg, Ships, and Japan is something that would be of general knowledge to everyone without some research.

Personally I have no problem with googling, it is like a dictionary, when I dont know something I look it up. Much easier now they have google and no longer need to go tot library research dept.

I agree many of these clues are not something anyone could come up with the answer to, unless they knew the subject. I like your clues and think you did really well choosing them. I didnt mean to make it personal to you. I have felt the same way when folks have said things about not googling and I wonder how the heck anyone is supposed to put the clues together to get the answer out of thin air. Unless they know something of the subject.

Sorry if it came across as an attack on you I didnt mean it like that.
I passed on the win because I have won a few times recently and would like someone else to have a chance.

I think the trick is to come up with a thing and then make sure it is not as easily googled, although in certain circumstances it might be hard to do that.

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (8/13/2010 9:36:58 AM)

Googling has always been permitted.  Sometimes a quartet is google-proof.  Recent example: my rivers puzzle.  If you googled the 4 words (not knowing they were rivers) you learned they were rivers.  BUT!  There were almost 4 million sites... LOL!

The other way to google-proof a quartet is to have it come up "no sites found."

The "problem" with Pearls, Faberge Egg, Ships, and Japan, is that those are 4 VERY different things.  The sense of the game is to list 4 SIMILAR things.  Rivers or states.  Much better would have been to list the names of her four daughter-in-laws (did she have as many as that?)  Oh, that reminds me.... I once listed the 4 grand-children of the late Princess Margaret.  Two of them have last name of Armstrong which was a dead-give-away.

FR

I think it's good that this thread has been a little more organic lately. Some new players putting their spin on things and some thinking outside the box.

It got a little sterile for a while. I know for my part, I don't know the game 'rules', but I'd like to think that participation is king and that getting there is half the fun.

Im not disagreeing with anything said. There are definitely ways to drop clues or formulate the quartet that everyone can follow.

Just my take on things. Enjoy!

(DC is the OP.  And in games the OP sets the rules.)

igor2003 -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (8/13/2010 10:12:14 AM)

Okay, with all that said and cleared up let me offer something of a clue...or clues.

The secret to the answer might be more in the service to the lady of the house.  (And the clues might be more in the words themselves rather than in exactly what is said.)

poise -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (8/13/2010 10:43:27 AM)

I just realized you have flashing sunglasses Igor. Thats hot!

you also have mail

heartcream -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (8/13/2010 10:57:56 AM)

So does there need to be a different thread to have four things that are similar in that they are connected to the answer?

Lance you said DC was confused, so I am guessing you and he had a wee chat about it?

How boring to jump in a game, have lots of fun, and get it all wrong.

poise -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (8/13/2010 10:59:46 AM)

This can only mean one thing heartcream. We suck! [:(][:D]

poise -> RE: Fresh Meat for the Win! Come Get it while its HOT! (8/13/2010 11:05:24 AM)

While I am quite the opportunist, I also know the answer to this (and thought it was cute too!)
Since I've had my share of posting here lately, I will refrain from answering so that I can work the
concession stand for all the fresh posters that will hopefully come visit us[:D]

I hope they tip well!

These are the 4 clues up for grabs. What do they have in common?

Renaissance
Tempo
Evergreen
Tranquility

LanceHughes -> RE: Fresh Meat for the Win! Come Get it while its HOT! (8/13/2010 11:55:55 AM)

It's not so much about sucking.... ahem! as it is about having fun!  Structure is structure.  You wouldn't want to go onto an (American) Football field and play according to what Americans call Soccer.

Musicmystery -> RE: Fresh Meat for the Win! Come Get it while its HOT! (8/13/2010 12:28:18 PM)

OK.

In reverse order (latest one first), they are the secret service codenames for the past four first ladies.
