Hey! I belong to a UK Femdom group called The Black Widows! We only bite if asked nicely..... Whats this recluse spider look like? I'm wondering if its the one I read about thats here in the UK too? Looks like a house spider? Its just I had four bites on my leg in the summer from something like that - must have been in my bed (arrrggghhhh!). I looked it up on the internet and apparently we have this one spider in the UK that bites and gives what I got (and sounds similar to Level) - painful, itchy red bite zones about a quarter inch in diameter. The skin went a horrible dark red and though I never had a scab form, I still have those little imperfections on the skin six months later. No way was it a mosquito type bite. E

Loxosceles reclusa and the other medically significant members of that genus are somewhat limited in geographical distribution and are frequently blamed for necrotic lesions in places they don't even exist, by medical docs who should recognize the differentials and don't. There are some excellent papers on the medical misdiagnosis of loxoscelism and necrotic arachnidism in various public archives like PubMed. The symptoms you are describing are not a good match for true loxoscelism. There could be many possible causes but I don't know your location or what you may have been exposed to.

Level please excuse the temporary hijack but when my brain remembers something it forgot I have to act fast. Najak, I was thinking of you this weekend while watching tv. There was a show called "When Snakes Bite" there was this older gentleman, 80 some years old that was just amazing! He keeps and handles hundreds of poisonous snakes, has been bit many times and just keeps doing it. I was thinking of you and your knowledge and even wondered if you knew that amazing man. Okay, back to your regularly scheduled programming

Thanks Level. Its not the same one that got me after all that! I found my Spiders book out (OK yes, I have a morbid fascination - whaddya expect when I'm hanging round with you people LOL!) Mine was tegenaria agrestis, common to Europe and NW USA. Yours is loxosceles reclusa, a pure American beastie! Its marked with two skull and bones in my book Level, and it says a bite leads to ulceration of the skin (alike with mine) and sometimes death (unlike mine, which has only one skull and bones) Dont want to worry you, but maybe you should get checked out? E

If you were bitten by a brown recluse spider, SEEK MEDICAL HELP IMMEDIATLY!the only time i have been in the hospital as an adult was when i was bitten,in the forarm I waited about three days to seek medical help, i felt perfectly fine , but there was this big red welt on my arm, and a red line was beginning to develope from the welt to my heart! , they sent me to the hospital immediatly they said " do not go home first " roy

I was biten twice back in July ,once on my thigh and once on my arm. My thigh swelled to the point I couldnt move my knee. I went to the Dr. and they treated me with Antib. and creams once they cut them open to drain... I know how ya feel. My Great Grand Mother told me to put a paste made of Alum and water on it and cover it and it wouldnt scar and would heal faster. I did for the one on my thigh but not my arm,,, and it did hurt and burned like hell... but I have NO scar at all on my thigh just alittle discoloration and the scar on my arm is still red and purple and raised. I had moved into a new house, even more in the woods then now and had some one spray after that happened and I still found then all over so I moved. I also contacted the State and they came out and checked it all out... not sure what happened after that I was OUTTA there.

As Katy said, it appear most heal on their own or with a little help, without becoming too nasty.

Yeah, that's some depressing pics. What I'm hoping is that, because I'm on day 7 or thereabouts, and it is still "minor" in scope and damage, that I won't be looking like a reject from a horror flick. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Lady E: Tegenaria is another genus of real medical significance that can cause necrotic arachnidism, but it's usually less serious ulceration than Loxosceles. UtopianRanger, you almost certainly did not see a black mamba. The Okinawa mongoose fights use cobras. Cobras are sadly slow strikers and are no match for a mongoose. One can play hand games with a cobra all day long as they are slow and predictable. Dendroaspis is a whole other story. The mongoose would lose. Same story with vipers for the most part; they strike with absolutely blinding speed. It's only cobras that are so sadly slow and silly in their defensive responses that any mammal with teeth that is bigger than the snake's head can do some ugly damage. Feeding them live adult prey in captivity is not encouraged because of the high risk of injury to the snake. Pinkies or prekilled only. They survive in the wild by going after small and relatively helpless food, or they end up with a hell of a lot of scars as wild caught adults. Cobras are silly slow-worms and are easy to handle with no tools or the simplest tools. Mambas are in an entirely different ballpark, and any human handler (or mongoose) playing games with this genus is going to be in serious trouble in very short order.
