Heh......Another very distinct thing I remember about Okinawa was that our battalion XO told us that the folks running the snake fights were either part of or tied to the Yakuza. And yes the Habu was the native snake on the island, but the people who ran these snake fights also had imported Cobras and Mambas.

Level, I hope everything turns out well ... BUT, this thread just has to be a TOS violation.
 
I have now offically put every single fucking thing in my room, in a sealed plastic bag. I'm pushng my bed to the middle of the room, and am going to check Overstock.com for some sort of bed hover device.

I'm notoriously arachnophobic, looking to holiday in Australia for Christmas with a few friends and family, and after using chat with some who live in the wonderful land of Oz, have to say I'm thinking twice about even going at all, mainly due to these spiders.  One lady told me how just recently her husband was bitten, aparently one had laid eggs in her sofa -- my skin is about ready to crawl off my bones just at the thought. 

Anyhow, she said they discovered this infestation afetr one came out and he was bitten on the arm.  His arm swelled immensely and he was rushed to the hospital, he's fine now but aparently the itching, swelling and pain was intolerable for a while after the bite.  Wish you luck, hope it's as comfortable as possible.

I checked out that link that was posted, I never knew that could happen, I thought it was just dangerous if left untreated and swelling was the only symptom...wow.

Now seeing users in North America saying they are over here -- I'm about ready to look for a home in Alaska where it'd probably be too cold for these little bastards to survive, am I right?

Just wow...this will haunt me for a while, not looking forward so much to that holiday anymore [:(]

The initial bite is usually painless. Oftentimes the victim is unaware until 3 to 8 hours later when the bite site may become red, swollen, and tender. The majority of brown recluse spider bites remain localized, healing within 3 weeks without serious complication or medical intervention. In other cases, the victim may develop a necrotic lesion, appearing as a dry, sinking bluish patch with irregular edges, a pale center and peripheral redness. Often there is a central blister. As the venom continues to destroy tissue, the wound may expand up to several inches over a period of days or weeks.

girlie...I do the same thing with yellow-jackets and adobe bugs that seem to come out of the woodwork of my old house; suck 'em right up in the vaccuum.  Well, I USED to do that, till I emptied it one day after a couple days of 'captures'...only to watch several, dusty bugs crawling out of the wad of dog hair from the bin.  Talk about the heebie jeebies; nothin worse than a pissed-off hornet!  Ackkkkkkkkk!!!

...and reminds Level I told ya the story about 'my bite' cuz, while I did have to take antibiotics and my hand felt wierd for a couple weeks...I never lost it.

Oh, and yes LadyE...I shake out my boots before I even put them on!  If not for the damn spiders...for the mice that seem to be invading my home.

My late Master was TERRIFIED of spiders..mainly because he had a serious allergic reaction to a spider once that landed him in the hospital..Me, on the other hand, am NOT afraid of spiders...not one bit.

I'msure all will turn out well like most nasty creatures, and illnesses they are only a serious danger to the young the elderly or those with a compromised immune system....oh god! you're fucked...lol.

Was bitten by what was thought to be one of those critters 4-5 yrs ago in the right elbow...people now call me "lefty."  In reality arm swelled up, area around it turned red,had awful night sweats and cooly morbid off the fucking wall dreams...virtually hallucinating....much of the skin on my elbow sluffed off.....Yes , it was kind of cool.

Anyway if you don't make it your death will be in such a small sub group of possible ways to meet your demise...truly an honor.

Cottonmouths, copperheads, timbers, pygmy rattlers and corals are our heritage.  We used to have more Eastern diamondbacks but they're pretty darn rare these days.  The Carolinas has the finest true red pygmy (Sistrurus miliarius miliarius) and some very nice "black velvet" timbers higher up in the Western mountains.

Lots of nonvenomous cuties also.  Hognose (dead lookalikes for pygmy rattlers if you don't know better or don't check the tail) and assorted watersnakes which are also lookalikes for cottons and coppers.  Corn and rat snakes all over the place.  I pay much less attention to what isn't medically in'resting though, so that won't be anywhere near a complete rundown of the harmless stuff.

Cobras would be easy and cheap to get in Okinawa as they are all over Asia.  They are not native to Japan, but they are extremely common in China and are sold casually dead or alive in Chinese exotic meat markets.  Importing mambas would be MUCH harder and require an expensive shipment from Africa and a couple of reams of official paperwork.  African exporters have a minimum order below which they won't even ship a box, so anyone wanting a couple of mambas either has to find a local importer already in the snake trade or lay out a couple grand at absolute rock bottom minimum.  This was even more true back in the 1980's.  Keeping imported mambas alive for any length of time if you didn't know much about snakes....well....let's call that a difficult task.  That plus the fact that a mamba/mongoose fight would be as sadly one sided in the snake's favor as a cobra/mongoose fight is in the mongoose's favor leads me to suspect that they were not using Dendroaspis polylepis but an Asian look-alike.  No one would know the difference (except the mongoose who didn't get killed).  The ignorant people supporting this cruel spectacle with their admission money certainly wouldn't.

You are simply the most rounded woman I have witnessed of recent, I would attempt to find a subject that you don't have at some information or idea about but I think I would be burdened with an enormous task. It may seem I am chasing your posts around simply to see what you have next to say. Keep up the impressive work woman. Is it the long hair that you draw you strength from. (grinz) Of course you know where that idea came form.
