You know what bothers me about this whole choice problem? The simple fact that some people think that they have the right to choose not only for themselves but also for others. I don't have a problem with people that oppose abortions - they shouldn't have them. I don't even have a problem with people that won't use contraceptives, they have that right too (although there is an overpopulation issue at stake there in my view). What bothers me is the notion that someone else thinks they can decide what's right for me and mine. I just won't allow that. My freedom to do these things is de facto - I don't really care if it's legal or not, it's just safer for women when it's legal. I will use contraceptives and I will avoid childbirth at my discretion and by whatever means necessary.

In other countries women must strangle unwanted children in the fields. Is that what some of you want? It's what comes of trying to control other people's bodies.

Chaingang, you have every right to hold the belief that the editorial's main focus is contraception. However, when in a public forum you direct others to that article without any commentary of your own... without any indication of what aspects of the article you wish to provoke comment on, do not be surprised when others do not reach the same conclusion or comment how you wish.

Unless, of course, that was your intent; to introduce a potentially controversial topic with the sole purpose of inciting comments that might be contrary to your own hidden opinion... just so that you could dismiss those views as being irrelevant, off-topic, and therefore unwelcome.

Just what was your point in highlighting this editorial?

The editorial may indeed discuss the benefits of contraception, but the main focus is not to argue for the acceptance of contraceptives, but to vilify those whose choose to publicly oppose them.

But that article is C- work for an freshman if one is grading by honesty of presentation and citing "facts".

It's an editorial. The intent is to state a persuasive viewpoint, not to provide endless citation for facts that can probably be disputed anyway.

Further, you claim Planned Parenthood is famous for abortion. I bet the people that actually frequent the clinics consider them famous for a whole host of health services. This opinion of yours does nothing but reveal your own ignorance.

If you don't like the way the "article" is framed, go write your own.

You presume a lot of things, I've noticed.  And call people ignorant, a lot. When it's really the lack of reading ability on your part. Or maybe you did read it, and conveniently didn't quote where it was obvious I knew they did other things.

Fact: I do know Planned Parenthood do other things besides abortion, but MOST associate them with abortion. So, you don't have to be a genius to see why people will bring up abortion at the mention of them. Why don't you go back and read were I said as much originally.
You're argument is like mentioning KFC and getting pissy that people keep talking about chicken when you want to focus on the cole slaw. Well, they are famous for their chicken, so that is what most people will think of first.

Anyway, if you don't want people to disagree or point out that the article is nearly complete opinion that breaks down to nothing more than "Family planning is Good", but doesn't support the assertion in any provable way, well then next time you post simply state. "I don't want people that don't agree with the article to state an opinion, and the article is composed of what could be completely made up facts". And I gladly will oblige.

You know the funny part is I agree contraception is good and I'm Pro-choice technically, as I do think it's has to be a woman's right. The article is just one person's ramblings though, nothing more. Where is the basis for discussion in that. I'm sure you knew that the second it was posted the type of reaction it would invoke. As I don't judge you to be ignorant of human behavior.

Thanks.

JustHeather, it's nice to see someone agreeing that abortion does not have a place in family "planning".

I dont think it's that simple.
Like many complex social issues, there are over-lapping problems, concerns, causes and issues that are best discussed in concert.
Abortion is not contraception, but for most people it is a closely-related subject, as we have seen demonstrated here.
So, to say it has no place in the discussion, no, I would not agree.
