I can't help but wonder why Bush waited until Congress and the House were both controlled by the Democrats, before seeking to escalate the number of troops in Iraq.

There is a wonderful cartoon showing an elephant at the wheel of a car which has smashed into a tree. The elephant is turning to his passenger, a donkey, and is saying, "OK, you've been complaining about my driving. Let's see if you can do better." The facts are the "car" is a wreck and there isn't much that can be done about it.

I can't view this as anything more than a publicity stunt. Congress can cut off funding, not dictate how the war is conducted. Even if the Dems could get that through their pussy-hair margin in the Senate, they'd never overturn a veto. A far more telling press release of what is coming is the resignation of failed (thank God) Supreme Court nominee Harriet Myers as White House Counsel. After the burger-flippers get their raise (and prices are already up at the drive-thru window), it is going to be one investigation after another for two years.

If I were a criminal wanting to escalate a war, well the democrats and their investigative functions into my shenanigans might stop me.

Of course, the people don't want war. Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a parliament or a communist dictatorship . . . That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country. OK- civics 101 lesson: It IS Nancy Pelosi's job as Speaker of the House to limit Presidential power in the United States Gov't. That she has already taken the witholding of funds to fight the Iraq war off the table has told me in no uncertain terms that she's not up the job. I can forgive the younger among us for not knowing this, as the Republican led House and Senate have certainly not been doing any sort of limiting for many years now. But- we the voters asked for it and now all I hear are complaints about how this isn't what we wanted. Listen carefully... "I TOLD YOU SO!!!!!!" By the way, John, Mr. Bush wouldn't make it as a meter maid- it would cut into his golf schedule. Luckily, being the most powerful man in the world allows him to ignore world affairs and go play anytime he likes.

The poor slob on the farm wants to keep his farm. The slob wants to be free. He doesn't want his women wearing scarves and he certainly doesn't want war. But "comes a time," you have to stand up for what you want. It's not a political decision. It's a secular decision. You, that includes me, do what you have to, to protect what you have.
