I am new to owning a parrot. A parrot is one the most selfish animals around. When they scream it sucks.

i had a Lorie once truly all birds like parrots, lories, etc. belong in a zoo....men complain about "high maintenance women" PLEASE get one of these birds as a pet.

im afriad it just isnt working out with this bird. he screams like an insane isylame. i belong to a few groups in that topic and they are so quick to yell abuse.

high maintenence is right!!

What kind of parrot is it? "Parrot" just means they're a hookbill - from parrolets and lovebirds which weigh about 2 ounces on up.

Larger parrots like macaws and cockatoos are like perpetual 2 year olds. They can, however, be trained - but they will always be very high maintenance. See if you can find a local exotic bird club - your vet probably knows of one, or check in a copy of Bird Talk magazine. They may be able to help you learn how to train the bird and better understand its needs.

Unfortunately all too often folks invest the money in birds as pets without taking the time to learn about them.

it is an african grey blue front. i should run an ad and sell him. he is more work then my german shappard- at times it is like psyching eachother out. I bought 10 books on the matter. Maybe ill just give him to my friend Jeanne in Chicago. Ill try to post a pic of him.

I think you're mistaken on the name....as far as I know, African Greys are either Timnehs or Congos. They're grey birds, medium size, with red tails. Congos will have a brighter red tail and be physically larger than a Timneh. "Blue" isn't a color variation with African Greys. Amazons are in general very loud birds, and either folks tend to be able to love and live with that, or not.   There is some behavior work you can do with them - you need Amazon-specific information, not just on birds in general.

As far as resale value...you're dealing with a living creature there that apparently isn't too happy and isn't making you particularly happy. Would you try to get rid of your dog by selling him - or would you put some time and effort into finding him an appropriate home and don't worry about the cost?

Birds can be wonderful companion pets, just as much as dogs or cats, IF you take the time to understand them and learn how to work with them.   Don't treat it like an object just because you have not done that.

No I would not sell my dog. For 6 years she has been loyal and a great companion. Sheba would die fighting to protect me. where as teh parrot would enjoy watching it happen. Luckily I did not pay retail for him. I never pay retail.

What you have there is a Blue Front Amazon. Amazons are NOT appropriate "firsts" for someone who has never owned a bird before.

Perhaps if you'd "paid retail" and gotten the bird from a reputable dealer, you'd have avoided this - they could have coached you on whether or not its personality would be a good "fit" for you, and how to care for it. When you make an investment in a pet that lives 50-60 years, chasing a bargain isn't the way to go about it.

My suggestion to you is that since you're clearly fed up with the bird, find a local exotic bird rescue and let them find an appropriate home for it.

If you want to keep it...you will need to do some serious behavioral work with it to learn what's triggering it's screaming and how to calm it down. I have smaller much more low maintenance birds, and I still spend at least an hour or more a day directly interacting with them - an Amazon will require more than that. Regardless, an Amazon is an Amazon is an Amazon - there will ALWAYS be a level of "jungle screams" with them - it's what is natural to them.

I ran an add - to sell him, so we shall see. I bought him from a private party- not a breeder or dealer. These birds scream. That is what is sealing his fate. In the 80-s I housat a friend who had a grey. HUGE difference. I thought I knew what I was getting into.

This must be commen. I know plenty of people I can give him to.

I made a mistake. An exotic bird seemed to be a status symble- a toy.

Live and learn. I guess. :-?

Yep, and that's why shelters are filled with so many unwanted pets - people don't bother to know what they are getting into. There are some "bad pets" out there, but most are victims of dumb people.

It's a shame you don't care enough about the living creature to find a good home for it though; letting it go to the highest bidder is just going to perpetuate the issue.

I'd take him off your hands in a heart beat... I had a parrot for years.. Amazon... and I love every minute of it. Yes, they are high maintenance and very destructive as well as expensive to take to a vet... when you can find one that takes exotic birds. Still... I absolutely love birds.

I am glad you posted this so that others can see they really need to research before committing themselves to a creature like an exotic bird. There are so many people that tire of them quickly and turn them loose even though it often kills them if set free in the wrong sort of climate. I used to work for a bird breeder when I was a kid, his aviary was next door to me.

I have had a double yellow head, raised by my gramdmother and adopted by me when my grandmother passed away, so spoiled but loving, the bird was heartbroken when her "mother" of nearly 30 years was gone one day. The parrot was still sweet and a good bird, but was so lost she sort of withered away.
Before that one I had a lilac cheeked amazon, she was a hoot! She had a great personality, spoiled, but fun and also loving. One morning she was just dead and the vet I had said it was probably a heart attack ... who knew birds had heart attacks? She was only about 12 years old at the time too.
One day I will have another, they are such good company. Right now my pets are 2 DumboRats ... talk about spoiled but loving creatures!

I do hope you manage to find someone who has the time and ability to spend time calming your bird down.

Lately I have had this bad habit of accumulating "stuff" into my place. I have all teh toys and gadegts, how can I deny me after all the years? I deserve toys right?

I should have done my homework.

If I can be candid here. It sure is good I never had any children. You cant just run and add and sell them.... since I cant handle a bird- I wouldnt be able to ahndle a child.

Not that is a bad thing.

I dont think males are as forgiving as females are.

Well I can't believe I missed an entire thread about birds.

All in all though, MsSonnetMarwood said everything I would have said, exactly as I would have said it. *grin*

It's a shame that people don't research pets (ANY pets) before they purchase them on a whim, because they are "pretty" or because they might learn to talk. Its because of this that there are so many unwanted pets in the world. I wish that I was in a place that where I could have my dream aviary, because I would take that bird off your hands in a moment... I really hope you do the right thing and find him a good home.

New to owning a parrot? Im pretty sure i have heard you talk about your parrot since i joined here.
