Modernisation brings its rewards which is why all countries want to modernise and all countries have latent talent. The fact was that 18th century England was modern, Scotland was still feudal and it was the modernisation caused by the Union that allowed latent Scottish talent to be aired. It wasn't for nothing that many ambitious Scots couldn't get to London quick enough, without the Union much Scottish talent would have remained, well.....latent.

I would like to see an independent Scotland. Despite living in Amsterdam there are enough Scots here who are forever going on about how England did Scotland down. Please, please, all Scotsmen vote for independence!

Well, they're a proud lot aren't they.......and who can blame them for wanting to wear skirts and general womens' accessories in peace and without us taking the piss? Not me.

As a sidenote, the Scots have made up disproportionate numbers of the British Army over the centuries. I'll bet my cock that they have shed more blood for the British casue than the English or the Welsh as a percentage of the population. Also, they were always the most feared fighting troops in the British Army. In WW1, the Germans called the Highlanders 'Devils in Skirts'....a) because the Scots are fond of wearing women's clothing (pointing out the obvious, I know) and b) they took no prisoners - for them it was kill or be killed.

So, I reckon they've done their bit for the British cause. Time for them to take their destiny into their own hands and get back to farming, fishing and fighting among themselves.

Take a bow for the Scots.

"Apart from the Brits, would anyone else care?  ........probably not, the French would love it and recreate the auld alliance with Scotland, Brussels would rub their hands with glee, and the US wouldn't notice.....!"

Do even the Brits themselves care?

A long time ago I gave up calling myself British.

I prefer to call myself English.

After all, the Scots and Welsh don't want to be associated with us, so would we want to continue being adjoined with them?

Mark

The Scots got most out of the Union so one would expect them to be more enthusiastic for it, well, the Scottish elite did. Which is why the Scots are looking for independence 'in Europe'. They think they can get more out of Europe than they can out of England. I doubt it though, times have changed and donor countries are fed up at throwing money at other countries while they have so many problems themselves.

I'm with MarkWilliam, I consider myself English rather than British because I'm just fed up of the Scots forever whining. It just wears you down in the end and its not as if they are doing the English a favour.

Nationalism is not a big thing for me - British, English....neither here nor there. Yeah, we've done a few decent things here and there but we've also pissed off a lot of people over the centuries so make of that what you will.

As a North Easterner, I feel I have a lot more in common with your average Jock than your average Cockney - my take on it. So, I can see where they're coming from in their wish to disassociate themselves with London.

As for the debate on will they be better off? Better to control your own destiny and make a mess of it than have someone control your destiny for you and do a slightly better job.

Nationalism is not a big thing for me, not having lived in Britain for half my life except when I'm in the company of a Scot because as an Englishman is not allowed to forget it. I used to call myself British if anyone asked but now I always say English. As for Scots not identifying with London, when I lived in London there seemed to be more Scots there than in Scotland, as was the complaint when James I moved his court down from Scotland to England.

Here's an idea.

Split the UK.

England votes not to join the EU (likely, considering the Murdoch press et al), whilst Scotland and Wales do.

Instantly, 50% of the population of England are immigrants here without leave to remain, and here without permission to work, since we are no longer an EU country.

The trains and ports would be busy whilst all these foreign nationals were being rounded up, and "sent back where they belong" - ie Wales and Scotland LOL!

I love it when a plan backfires

E

At university and when I left I played for various football teams and there were always 3 or 4 Jocks in the team. The England/Scotland thing was very rarely mentioned - our main concern was where the next beer/night out/woman was coming from (not nationality). Plus, it's only a bit of crack. If the Jocks are winding you up then give a bit back.......plenty of ammunition with their penchant for womens' clothes. That's life ain't it, if you can't take a bit then don't give it.

Personally, I've always found them good lads.......love the crack, no problem. I can't remember having a run-in with a Scotsman and I've met plenty along the way.

Have a read of this entire thread and it doesn't look impressive for the English............just lots of whining about the Jocks. No wonder they want independence having to listen to the English and their identity crisis

Northern English for me........wouldn't want to be associated with the queen and assorted hangers on.

I'm all for it.  I've fucked an English girl, and she counts on my list for the whole U.K. right now; if Scotland secedes, I'd have to go find a Scottish girl to add Scotland to the list.

Best argument I've heard yet for Scottish independence. Game on, thread closed.

I'm not really arguing, MC.

I'm saying the Scots have enough about them to do their own thing. That's all. If you don't agree then that's fine.

When they were alive is immaterial to me and I think Alexander Bell is entitled to the credit for his work (rather than the English for granting them a union).

When I was studying ancient Rome in college, I learned that the Emperor Hadrian built the wall to prevent the Scots from stealing cows from the south.

Not sure what that has to do with the conversation or the modern world, but I found it amusing as hell.  Hadrian's wall was never guarded to a level that a determined Scottish invasion could stop, but the Scots were never interested in invading.

[smartass]

They break off from the union, I hope the Brits keep their cows locked up at night.

You should try parking your car in Glasgow, you will see not much has changed.

lol Sinergy, yeah, you've got to watch those Jocks........turn your back and you'll be a minus a pig/cow/sheep in no time. Best not to be a farmer is what I say!

The Scots and the English had a right go at each other for a few hundred years. The place I come from originally changed hands on a regular basis and some of the Jock dialect is still used in the North East to this day. They're not a bad lot really - it's just the English have an identity crisis so to make themselves complete they need a country to vent their anger at. It used to be France, now the Jocks have to put up with it

lol MC.

Have you tried parking your car in Manchester?! and you used to live in Liverpool so you should know that English cities have more than their fair share of car thieves.

I read a while back that the Gateshead and Sunderland area is the car crime capital of Europe so looks like Glasgow isn't so bad after all.

I did also read that Glasgow is the most violent city in Europe based on assaults etc........so not looking so good. I remember a few years ago when Celtic beat Rangers - a Rangers fan shot a Celtic fan in the chest with a cross-bow at close range. Harsh if you ask me.

I conveniently forgot when I wrote my previous post that I had my car stolen in Liverpool but let's not let inconvenient facts get in the way of some good old fashioned prejudice and anyway, enough Scots settled in Liverpool to blur the issue.

Yes we would. We would redistribute wealth and use the southerners as our servants. Quite simple really.

So I assume that when it comes down to it your sole objection to a ruling elite is that you are not part of it?

I personally blame William the Conqueror for Britain's continued disdain for all things French.

He started it all.

Sinergy

p.s. Although, I suppose on that note, my ancestors (Danish Vikings) started it all by settling in France.

Allow me to take a moment to apologize for my hand in all this.
