Out of all the women I've met and then dated starting from vanilla context, only two of them had a kink that complemented *My* interests. The kink just sort of evolved with the first of those, and then after a decade of vanilla, a casual comment by the second rekindled interest, and things progressed from there.
From a practical viewpoint, I'd guess that finding compatible kinks is much less common than pairing up similar interests in, say, racing sailboats, musical performance, etc. So it's just plain common sense to improve the odds by visiting local munches, sites like this, etc.
And then there's the whole expectations thing, too. Is it a play-date or a couple-date? (Not that the two are always distinct.) I'm still a romantic at heart, and would like nothing better than to luck into the love-at-first-spank-happily-ever-after, but the reality is more likely that it's going to take some getting-to-know each-other meetings, especially if both people are looking for a long-term relationship.
