LadyEllen -> Racism on Big Brother (UK) (1/17/2007 3:02:02 PM)

What do the Brits (and others of course) here think of this situation in the BB house?

To fill in for our US friends (though if you Google UK news it'll be there), there has been a celebrity Big Brother show running for the past few weeks. One of the housemates is a Bollywood actress from India, in there with the usual range of C list Brit celebrities (Z list on the world stage).

The Brits have apparently been giving her a very hard time, treating her in a way that has provoked 20,000 complaints to the broadcasting regulator for racism and a question raised in Parliament about the whole thing.

To me, its unsurprising. The Brit "celebrities" in the house, comprise very adequate representatives of the most ignorant and stupid elements of the Brit population. The problem though is, that I'd guess that up to 80% of the white Brit population would respond no differently in such a situation, and further that it is in the main this 80% from which the Big Brother audience is being drawn - and they are also the same sorts which look up to these sort of "celebrities".

Now the actress in question, is as one might expect, quite a beautiful lady and, subjective though it might be on my side as one who has only caught glimpses of her and the programme, has the look and aura of intelligence and sophistication about her. I would bet that she is a far better person by every measure, than the ignorant "celebrities" who are giving her a hard time for being Indian.

So, is this an example of the endemic racism in much of Brit society? or is it a case of jealousy from these Brit "celebrities" who know that she outclasses them in all ways?

Never seen UK BB,  Im just guessing that it is

It's what goes on here on our BB I doubt it is that much different there.

meatcleaver -> RE: Racism on Big Brother (UK) (1/17/2007 3:25:57 PM)

Its no more than a bit of bitch slapping wouldn't put right from what I've seen on the news. Two dowdy E list celebrities being jealous of a beautiful successful Indian. Take the Indian out of Silpha (?) and she would still have problems because its a woman thing, jealousy not racism.

seeksfemslave -> RE: Racism on Big Brother (UK) (1/17/2007 3:44:45 PM)

While you all know that I am a moderate on matters of racial and cultural division, I do notice that the media are not forthcoming in declaring what form the racism actually took. ie what was said.

I find it nauseating in the extreme to be lectured about cultural tolerance by people from India, a hotbed of murderous prejudice and discrimination if ever there was one.

Also denigrating a dental nurse, quote in an Indian newspaper, smacks of exactly the same kind of of discrimination that the outraged are condemning.

Sorry to say it but I think I might be right.....as usual lol

No        I AM RIGHT !!!

Rule -> RE: Racism on Big Brother (UK) (1/17/2007 3:49:01 PM)

I suspect that it is a case of the odd one out. I do not know if that applies to all social classes, but expect so; must have been researched somewhere.

Never watch those kinds of programs. I am watching a bit of snooker at the moment. Murphy against Davis.

Thanks Level,

Now I'm convinced- its jealousy[:)]

Good morning, sweet....... I saw a couple of the others that are doing the sniping, and yeah, I think it's jealousy, too lol.

Lady Ellen, looking at this lady's picture she's Caucaision.
Are the other residents of the house of a different race?

LadyEllen -> RE: Racism on Big Brother (UK) (1/18/2007 9:43:29 AM)

Hi Popeye

Shilpa (the actress) is from India - I believe, not that its particularly relevant, she is of mixed descent (Tamil from Sri Lanka, and something else). But she looks "Indian" as far as the low brow whites in the house go. I'm not too sure, but the Tamils I believe are not Indo-European, unlike the high castes of India.

From what I observe, the hostility towards her is based on the following;
1) she's much brighter and better educated than the whites; I havent heard her speak, but I'd lay a bet that her English is better than theirs too
2) she's much more attractive than the whites
3) she has bags of talent, whilst the whites are in the main classic no-hopers who are only "celebrities" by accident, not by way of any particular ability

And this is then being expressed by way of racist comments and treatment.

Which particular aspects of egalitarianism  are represented by the caste system ?

Has anyone on this site ever had any dealings with. I hope its the right word, a Brahmin ? I am referring to the highest Hindu caste. I knew one who was kicked out of Uganda by Big Daddy Amin. A more obnoxious overbearing pig ignorant person it has never been my misfortune to meet. He didn't like me much either, my caste was too low
An interesting fact about this chap was that he was a right groveller when dealing with supervisory management types. Odd ennit ?

Does anybody know what was actually said on the programme ?

Lady, if that's so then it can't be "racism."
She's obviously Caucaision.
There are only three races; Negroid, Mongoloid, Caucasoid.
She's obviously not Negroid or Mongoloid.
"Tamil" is "ethnic" not a "race."
It's probably "Nationalistic Bias" not "racism."
"Race" is not determined by skin color but by anatomy.
Most people in India would be classified as "Caucaision" racially.
If those people on the show are trying to be "racist" they are ignorant! lol

accurate, but a bit nit-picky Popeye!

and yes, your final sentiment is bang on - ignorant scum. It amazes me constantly, that the likes of Jade Goody is being extolled as a role model - uneducated, loud mouthed, obnoxious, ignorant and ill mannered.

Seeks - I reckon the caste system isnt all that bad you know? If only Jade could be classed as an untouchable, we wouldnt have to put up with her and her ilk, save for when we had a blocked toilet or something. I'm not racist you see, just a good old fashioned elitist!

LadyEllen -> RE: Racism on Big Brother (UK) (1/18/2007 11:01:42 AM)

BTW - we're now up to 33,000 complaints to the broadcasting regulator

Car Phone Warehouse (major UK company in the mobile comms sector) has withdrawn its sponsorship

The police are investigating

BB producers have spoken to the ignorant scum within the house to advise them their behaviour could be construed as racist

But....... Shilpa apparently tomorrow, will say that she doesnt feel its racism per se being directed at her. Strange though, as I thought it was live. I dont think this means anything particularly as she might be trying to calm the situation in view of the furore that has erupted, the consequences of course will be effected upon her by the ignorant scum.

Still, I think its mainly jealousy a la schoolyard she's getting, and the ignorant scum are expressing it the only way they know how.

Lady Ellen, the Police?
Don't the Police in England have anything better to do than investigate soap operas on the telly?

seeksfemslave -> RE: Racism on Big Brother (UK) (1/18/2007 11:27:25 AM)

Anybody know what was said, ask I....for the nth time .

Incidently, why is it OK to talk about ignorant scum when referring to whites but if anyone said any such thing to a non caucasoid then all hell would break loose.

LadyE, many of your posts have been coherent but in this one you appear to have lost your marbles. Did Jade Goody say anything as offensive as that ?

Seeks, meet Google. Google, meet Seeks.

From over four million hits I read my two favourite commie-pinko-lefty-neolib sources, the Beeb and the Mother Corp. I am sure there are citations to meet every taste.

Excerpt from the BBC article:

On Monday night's episode, Jo reportedly suggested that Indians were thin because they are always ill as a result of undercooking their food. The trio also complained that Shilpa had touched other housemates' food with her hands. Danielle said: "You don't know where those hands have been."

Jade Goody's mother, Jackiey Budden, repeatedly referred to Shilpa as "the Indian" while she was featured on the show and was unable to pronounce her name.

General post.

I've now seen part of the programme. I don't recognize any of the British celebrities who seem ill educated, common and totally lack talent as far as I can tell. Now these celebrities are not celebrities or I've been out of the country way too long to know them. If they are celebrities, the British entertainment industry is in dire trouble. Who the fuck are they?

Racism? Jealousy for certain and maybe some of that jealousy has manifested itself in racism but I'd put money on it being jealousy, pure and simple.

LadyEllen the fact that you and the majority of people who are shouting out the racism card without actually of had viewed the show speaks volumes, and shows just how lazy a card it is to play whenever theres friction between people of different coloured skin. The only person in that house that has brought up any sort of racism issue is Jermaine jackson, as he only see's colour first.
Shilpa mocked the English accent just as much as they've taken off her accent, yet that wasnt viewed as racist.
Jermaine called Jacky white trash, yet that wasnt racist.
Shilpa only eats what she cooks, thats not racist, Shipa said she would only be with a man of the same race, thats not racist.
Jermaine only associates with the other person of colour, thats not racist.
They get together and bitch about Jade and the other whites just as much as jade bitches about her, thats not racist....
so why is it that everything the white people in the house do is a clear act of racism??

It has nothing to do with the colour of her skin, they resent her because of her class, because she comes from a life of servents, this is nothing new, England has always been divided by class but because she happens to have different coloured skin its now a race issue? Thats just such a lazy card to play, and one sadly played all too often that it ruins the country and makes you inclined to be racist.

seeksfemslave -> RE: Racism on Big Brother (UK) (1/18/2007 12:02:37 PM)

Ahh OK then, thanks. I have seen this business of being unable to pronounce difficult names described as racist before. In fact there is one nitwit going the rounds now, her name is Narinder, people called her Naz, she says that is racist and wanted something done.

The only Narinder I have ever met was a Sikh male.

I refer you to some Sri Lankin names to test  your racist quotient. Quite frequently they are more than 15 letters long. One has just come to mind. Wickramasinghe, thats 14, near enough. If I called him Wicksy I am being wicked ?

Another point about that pig ignorant Brahmin I spoke of earlier, He was a blood donor and a vegetarian. It happened that his blood was refused due to Iron deficiency. He played merry hell and...yes thats right....the race card. The white medics are clueless...so he said !!!
