China has destroyed an old satelite in a test,. Is this the start of a new cold war or are they sending Bush a message that the US can't call all the shots, especially since Bush has laid out his position....

Last August, Mr Bush laid out an even more robust vision of America's role in space, asserting Washington's right to deny access to any adversary hostile to US interests, and some arms control experts have accused the administration of conducting secret research on laser weapons to disable and destroy enemy satellites.

I have absolutely no idea what the message is that the chinese are trying to send out. What i do think and find pretty funny is :-
The test was especially troubling because it exposed the vulnerability of America's dependence on low-orbiting satellites, which are used for military communications, smart bombs and surveillance. In theory, last week's exercise could give Beijing the capability to knock out such satellites - a realisation that underlay the protests from Washington.
Last August, Mr Bush laid out an even more robust vision of America's role in space, asserting Washington's right to deny access to any adversary hostile to US interests,
Of course Mr Bush is going to find this worrying, probably about as worrying as the chinese find Bushes low orbitting satellites. Both countries are doing what they feel they need to to deny access to any adversary hostile to them.
There is no  difference between them at all, both are protecting their interests.

Bush probably paid the Chinese to do it so he could generate some New Fear for the next presidential campaign.

So, are we all going to have to use morse code soon?  It should be interesting where this leads to, if anywhere other than the standard diplomatic bickering.

Protienialy devestating, millions could lose there sky Tv. Lol

I could see something similar happening. Alot of countries are starting to catch up in terms of weapon technology and some of them we are not the best of terms with. I think there is already a large number of  low orbiting spy satilites looking very closely at China and North Korea as well as number of others. Plus with Russia now supplying Iran with Anti Aircraft weaponary i think things in the long term could start getting heading down that road.

Although i wouldn't like you guy to have another cold war, it did encourage alot of new inavations, as well as your space program so it wasn't all bad.

For Bush its poor wording and consideration in general...I would not have presented ideas of such an egocentric and selfish nature on the national level, especially when you are dealing in territory that technically doesn't belong to anyone, and potentially stepping on other people's toes. Personally I would have had the same ideas and talked about it with my joint chiefs for ideas to get some kind of ball rolling. but I wouldn't have said it out loud to the international community. Its poor diplomacy.

If I was China i would have told us to go fuck ourselves to be honest.

Unfortunately (?) Sky is probably quite safe being I high orboit Geo-stationary sattelite.

The real risk is to reconnaissance and the positioning satellites, so plan on many people getting lost and resorting to paper maps, no more lemming blindly following the voice from tom-tom :)

I can see where a new cold war could happen however, in a few years the Chinese will be able to fully kick our asses. At the same time they can also ruin us economically and not fare the worse for it. And since they havent been able to be trusted it's pretty likely they'll do all this to become numero uno and run shit.

If I awarded a prize for which nation, China or America, had launched the most attacks against other nations since 1945, who do you think would win ?

Chinese proverb - "if two Tigers fight, one is bound to be injured and the other will die."

I'm not saying I have no confidence in my nation's capabilities in warfare, truth is I believe a shooting war with China is inevitable, hell, it's very likely i'll be the one doing plenty of shooting if my AFSC goes the way I want.

But take a closer look at the Chinese specs:

- Helluva fast growing economy, courtesy mostly of us, which will leave the US behind damn quick if left unchecked.
- Serious Cyber skills [no jokes]
- a well entrenched espionage network
- nuclear capability
- a surplus of males in the population...a surplus which thier government can very easily press into military service, unlike ours.
- and now the capability to take down our sats.

The fact is that in most regards the playing field has been leveled, this isent some sand castle in the box we're coming and kicking over. China is a potential enemy that can give us some run of our money with conventional warfare, the USA's bread n butter. And I think they've learned quite a bit since thier "human wave" days...a shame, I know a few Rangers and Marines who would have enjoyed the chance to use some claymores against that.

Anyway, when it happens, I hope we have our ties good with India and maybe...MAYBE take Japan's leash off.

It was on the news tonight that China will be not be a 'super power' until the middle of this century. A little more than a few years lol.

Well what designates as a superpower exactly? Strong econ, nuke capability, one of the most formidable militaries in the world with even higher potential should conflict arise and now possesing capabilites which put them on an even level with us.

If it isent a superpower...then what is it?...and what does it make us?

I have no idea i'm only repeating what i heard on the news. They basically said China would not be a match for America until around mid century.
Dont shoot the messenger

The Chinese economy is based on our economy.  Full-blown war with us is the last thing they want.  Take a look around yourself.  Chances are very good that something within five feet of you says "Made in China" (check your stapler and pen drawer).

What the Chinese do want, is Taiwan back.  Seems like they are closer to that capability.

I expect this story will wither and die like so many about China and space before it.  It's inconvenient to the Clinton Legacy.

China is sending a message.  First they shut down the US spy satellites.  Now they are demonstrating that they have the technology to destroy them.

As the US depends on those things to gain the upper hand in battle, if I was the US I would be shitting my pants right about now.
