I generally prefer someone around my age, but it's no hard rule for me. Within 10 years is a general preference... but I won't pass up a connection with someone that falls outside that range.

I tend to be a little leery of those at the extremes of that range, 18-22 year olds often are so green that they don't know what they want and can cause drama due to it; those in the 38-42 area often feel they know more or can challenge me due to age alone, regardless of their experience level. But, as I said, they still fall in my normal range and it just comes down to finding compatibility.

The connection and matching of styles is so hard to find, regardless of age, that I definitely do not rule out anyone based on age alone.

For me it depends on the person, but my ex-husband was four years younger than me and my most recent partner was nine years younger than me. At this rate, I fear I'll be in prison in my 60s!

I do not, and I do not think I could, limit my choices just through age. I had some wonderful subs who were much older than me, and I have had subs who were younger, although not by a lot. If I am seeking a play partner, I have a list of other criteria that I go by and age is in the middle unless it is a factor that would limit what we both want to do. I personally like younger men, and I will admit that sometimes having a boy toy is very fulfilling in it's own way. Now here is the big 'but'...I have found that in an LTR, +/- 5 years works best.

After my ex being 13 years older than me and was interested in another Domme older than that just by how she made me feel and how she brings out the submissive in me. In general for now, no Domme older than my mother (43) and no one younger than my brother (20). Myself I am 23.

Joking aside, the point I wish to convey is that I don't think compatibility is a black and white matter. I think it is a complex, cumulative result of many factors that have varying degrees of importance for different people. My analogy to a sum is an attempt make an abstract concept less abstract. To make it less abstract yet, I can liken my concept of it to a weighing balance. Imagine that for each factor relevant to compatibility, some amount of beads are put into either the plus or minus side. The point I wish to make is that for a given factor important for compatibility, it is not black and white (it's not that you either put a bead or you don't but that you can put beads in varying amounts), and that even if a factor important for compatibility is missing (beads are added to the negative side or no beads are added), other factors can still compensate and bring compatibility. And, finally, I think compatibility is also not binary but has a range.
