Although I am sub I really have never liked all the BDSM costumes that seem to be so much a part of it. I mean I like whipes and handcuffs as much as the next deviant but I am more attacted to people in their regular clothes. The black leather and criss cross straps lend too much of a sameness. Just wondering if anyone else felt that way.

In my case "sameness" has nothing to do with my dislike of leather.  I haven't eaten flesh in over 35 years.  Haven't worn leather...even leather shoes, in about the same period of time.

"His Highness" is a flesh eater, and does have a few pieces of leather.  But, knowing that I am totally turned on by crisply pressed dress shirts and get sopping wet just ironing them is enough for him to have put those items in the back of the closet.

Tip?  BDSM is not a costume party.  PVC or leather does not a Dom/me make... Try poser on for size 9 times out of 10.  You see that mistake made all the time at fet parties and stuff.  They are more interested in looking the part and getting their pictures taken.  Take a flogger to them or grab them by the hair and shove them to their knees and they whimper like a little baby.

I find it difficult to dress for fetish events. The only words I have for my style of dress is "elegant slut." This does not mean those cheap dresses that come up if you google "sexy dresses." Rather it means sexy, understated, feminine, and reasonably well made. I can combine corsets with them (if you're large breasted, corsets are really your only way to go if you want strapless) but those have gotten to be so common that I'm reluctant to wear them. "Elegant slut" also doesn't mean just a nice cocktail dress. It's got to be more than that - and less than that.

Maybe one of these days, I'll get around to finding someone who will sew what's in my head and make a fortune.

i don't wear leather, except for my slave collar and some shoes, and i have never been with a man, whether Dom or not, who wore any leather, other than His shoes and His belt (which comes in handy for whipping my ass and the sound it makes when He pulls it out of His trouser's belt loops is heavenly to me).

i don't wear much black, either, but i did have a really nice dark, navy blue, suede skirt once.  Then again, i don't attend BDSM events, so there isn't much need for special "BDSM outfits" in my wardrobe.

It is a matter of personal taste, but i believe that, unless you are attending a special function that has a specific dress code, you should just wear whatever you feel comfortable in or whatever your Master dictates to you.

i am so looking forward to my first bdsm event with my Master and never really thought about attire.  something else to worry about!!

Having read the range of thoughtful opinions in this thread I hope you can rest easy in the awareness that attire is an inflated concern.

(But honestly, why do they always have to be black?)

Black is the color of sexual dominance - fascists always wear Black...

I wouldn't mind wearing leather, if I could afford it. Also love the idea of wearing ren fair outfits, or victorian gear,(etheir male or female clothing. heh.I am not a cross dresser, men's clothing can be more comfortable sometimes.)

Maybe in Hawaii it's white.  Haha.

I do dress in black, with Celtic crosses and even skulls and what not and I wear black nail polish, but it has nothing to do with my lifestyle.  I like dressing in darker, gothic clothing.  It is a matter of personal taste for me.  I also do not care for ordinary, boring clothing.  It is my personal sense of style.  I will take a pair of Enyces or Karl Kanis over Levis any day of the week.

annoraobeien -> RE: what if you love BDSM but dont like the usual gear? (1/29/2007 6:19:18 PM)

Huh? That is like saying all lesbians wear flannel shirts.

I look like I could be behind the counter of a bank most of the time.

Only clue you might have is I usually wear 4" heels.

The point being... ?

Because to date, no one has come up with a color that's darker! We can put a man on the moon, but... [:@]

MinofSin -> RE: what if you love BDSM but dont like the usual gear? (1/29/2007 6:45:33 PM)

I was wearing black long before I came into the lifestyle.  I have never been fond of leather, outside of leather jackets.  I actually do have a pair of leather pants that I have never worn.  My slave is a bootblack, but I don't even own a pair of boots.  The whole leather attire just doesn't fit in my with personal style.

sophia37 -> RE: what if you love BDSM but dont like the usual gear? (1/29/2007 6:58:57 PM)

Im sorry. The rules of BDSM plainly state there will be black leather and criss cross straps. So if you cant abide by the rules, I'm afraid you'll have to find a new pastime.

Laughing quietly on the inside. There are many different colors in leather, just be careful who sees you in them as yellow traditionally means "watersports" ;-)

As for your political comment ... Do you mean for example guys like the Brownshirts?.

As for the point of my post ... I'm afraid you missed it altogether, but I still wish you a Goodyear.

Sinimint -> RE: what if you love BDSM but dont like the usual gear? (1/30/2007 3:19:01 AM)

I love wearing pvc, leather, latex etc.  I have pvc hotpants in all colours, white, black, hot pink, yellow, fire engine red etc and matching 5" heel boots - I love dressing up.  All my life I have wanted to dress like this and in this scene I can.

But of course, whatever you feel comfortable in - that is what counts, and if you feel comfortable you will look good in whatever you wear.

It's like any event you attend in life, dress how you want, and dont knock others for the way they dress.  We are all different, with different styles and looks etc, and thank goodness for that or the world would be a dreadfully boring place.

If you dont like fetish wear, that is your choice, but the person wearing it may not be a poser or a show off, they more than likely absolutely love to wear that outfit, and feel bloody brilliant in it.

I would wear fetish 24/7 if I could, but its just not practicable unfortunately :(
