You will come to notice that people who like to dress up do, and some of us go as ourselves in whatever we feel like.  I like the occasional corset because I look hot in them quite frankly, but when I attended the fetish fair flea over the weekend, I along with a good 40% of other people wore comfortable everyday clothing.   The only time I put on a leather corset was to the ball, but still didn't wear boots, and instead wore cute black shoes.
I'm not comfortable being too overdone in costume either, so I too had these questions initially.   M

I don't dress out in fetish  clothing unless I am in a dungeon setting which is very rarely.
I love it.  I really get into the fetish clothing especially the teddies without bras.   I would never in my life have thought that I would wear something like this.
On the other hand, when my slave and I are together at home, I am in my jeans and a t-shirt.  He wears nothing.

I love to dress too.. it's part of the drama of the moment for me..I also love to see others dress up, it can turn an event into something extra special.. At the end of the day you wear what you like, worrying about other peoples perceptions of it is pointless.

I do not like BDSM "gear" on most people because their rolls and what not hang out all over the place and it looks ridiculous.  Some people look really good in it (I am thinking of a particular Mistress that looks stunning in fet gear), but I am sorry, your boobs falling out over the top or your sides hanging down out of your PVC is not the least bit appealing.  If your boobs wrap around your knees, a PVC or leather vest might not be the best idea.  A lovely bra and a flattering top would serve a lot better.  Black jeans to compliment or a long skirt (even better) works well with that. I much prefer to see the same people tastefully dressed in their every day attire and indeed look upon them far more favorably if they demonstrate a little bit of taste.

Unless we are at a fet party, my automatic instinct is to think "wannabe" and I doubt very much that I am alone in that.  I also doubt that was the image they were trying to portray.

Leather vests are important for people that throw whips from what I have read, so it is not all about appearance, but function.

Huh?  What function would that be? To keep them from stinging themseves?

Well then put down the whip you idiot, you haven't a clue how to use it!!!

This is a whole othert topic but just thought I'd throw it in here...
I don't agree with your statement above.  Not that I've ever hit myself so hard with my own whip that I wished I were wearing a protective vest, lol, but when I was learning to use a single tail one way method that was taught to me was to let the whip wrap around my own body as I was using only my wrist to flick it left to right. Practicing doing this for long periods of time has created a very steady and consistent stroke and I did that for months before ever cracking the whip (you know that big sound everyone loves.) So I have always hit myself with my whip, though I like the feel of it anyway and don't really see the leather vest as protection. Rather, a leather vest IMO is for displaying all your run pins.

Never had a problem with hitting my body with a whip..however with a signal whip I was given recently,  I managed to wrap/ catch the back of my wrist a few times , it needs a bit more conditioning.. off topic I know..however every new piece of equipment takes practice.

After over 20 years in the biz, admittedly I have only added a single tail to my toybox in the lasr 16-17 years, I have only once hit Myself with it. that was about 10 years ago, when I rapped it around my own leg getting overly fancy at a play party.

I've never been comfortable with the whole leather look in myself. At a fetish event I will wear a tailored black linen suite. Black vest and white tuxedo shirt. When I play at a fetish event I take off the suitcoat, hand it to a service slave and play with whomever. Afterwards, I retrieve the suitcoat and change my shirt. .I was never a jeans and teashirt sort of guy. I did buy a leather suit once, but my sub at the time said, "your not nearly as sexy" guess what? I haven't worn it since.

I have a surprise for the new sub I'm courting. When she comes over, she'll find me in my underwear, teashirt, drinking a can of beer and watching foorball on TV while I slouch on the couch.  I'll report back.

i've always seen people for who they are not what they wear. it doesn't matter what a person wears or doesn't wear as far as the lifestyle is concerned really. For instance, Sir is just as sexy to me in underwear and a t-shirt drinking a beer watching football as He would be wearing 100% suede or leather. - giggles -

There are events that request fetish attire, but even those events usually will accept black jeans or black pants and a nice top, or a nice outfit/suit. Leather wear isn't a requirement of the lifestyle. i don't wear a lot of leather, i love my micro suede cloak, or my other lil outfits, in fact i think the only leather wear i have (excluding footwear) is an old leather jacket. The only leather i truly love on my body is that of a flogger against my skin - giggle - don't get me wrong i like leather outfits, just don't need it to be me... and if i might add... i love the smell of leather.. mm-mm good memories...

As the german SM szene is very uniformed (yes, also uniforms, but do not let me get in SS uniforms at parties, we have unfortunately uniform fetichists who were this kind of uniform without a political agenda, but we have here although sm neo nazis, who were these kinds of uniforms out of a mixture of lust and political propaganda, without the insignien it is allowed under german law) in the sense of most wear black and latex is very prominent, i feel very similar to you. Half ot he men wear the dom vest, nearly all women wear high heels.

I always feel as the odd one out, with my very long Silk or Linen Dresses, and the mostly flat shoes. There are very expensive parties mostly on castles where my kind of dressing would not be so rare, because they are costume parties, but i do not have 250 Euro for one evening, this money i would rather spent for a new dress.

Lynae78 -> RE: what if you love BDSM but dont like the usual gear? (3/15/2007 8:24:27 AM)

A public play party coming up, I thought about wearing a long dark blue wrap skirt w/silver coins stitched to it, a black skirt underneath, and a black or blue sleeveless top, and silver and blue jewelry. Alot of times I prefer dressing casual, but occasionally I love to dress funky just for the hell of it.  heh. the comment about the yellow leather dress signifying watersports, I will keep that in mind. As I do plan on making it to a couple leather events soon.

Darkhaven80 -> RE: what if you love BDSM but dont like the usual gear? (3/15/2007 12:24:10 PM)

I havent been a to a club or anything, but from pictures I don't like the way it generally looks either. I'm sure I would look horrid in most of it. My coloring doesn't do well with black anyway lol. That's not to say I wouldn't wear it, of course, just my opinion.

Although I am sub I really have never liked all the BDSM costumes that seem to be so much a part of it. I mean I like whipes and handcuffs as much as the next deviant but I am more attacted to people in their regular clothes. The black leather and criss cross straps lend too much of a sameness. Just wondering if anyone else felt that way.

Completely.

I despise most of the outfits female dominants are shown wearing in most publications.

I'll wear black, maybe some red, and it tends to be "feminine" or casual when we are at conventions or munches but the fetish stuff is just a turn-off frankly.

Of course, I don't do BDSM for fetish reasons, I do it for the authoriy I get from one (or more) people and I don't own folks who need those stereotypical things. They can wear them if they like, Fox has a few rubber outfits, but you're more likely to see him in his button down mandrin style shirt over black pants and sandles if he's with me anywhere.

Of course, I have different ideas about what is appropriate for my slaves to wear and what is arousing for them to wear.

subsnow -> RE: what if you love BDSM but dont like the usual gear? (3/15/2007 3:13:50 PM)

i am very much into BDSM and D/s but i dress very conservatively. i don't wear a lot of black. i never wear leather. i am pretty down to earth in the way i dress. Lately i seem to be drawn towards some of the "costumes" though. i am looking into buying a corset. To me, it still looks like a regular shirt (at least the one i was looking at does) but it has a bit of edge to it....if that makes sense. It is a bit more suggestive of my lifestyle than my regular clothing.

My own short answer to your subject line is "yes". ::smile::

The first three years of my own training consisted of absolutely no gear. (No clothes, either. ; )
