Good posts, slo and Drea.

SirKenin -> RE: Casting spells (1/30/2007 10:29:25 AM)

Tyra Banks is a washed up fashion model.  She does run a show called America's Top Model, which my girlfriend watches.  She also runs a talk show.  I have seen a few episodes of it too and every one has been completely hopeless.  She should just retire.

LotusSong -> RE: Casting spells (1/30/2007 10:39:19 AM)

I looked into Wicca years ago.  For me.. it's too much unnecessary ritual.  I don't recall where I learned it.. but I always "see it done" and it is.   No ritual..no props.  It's "done" on some level of existence.. where it needs to be "done"most.  I leave it up to the higher  power to determine if my request is valid.

I do not control the universe.. I offer suggestions :)

Ah, excuse me. I did not see this show, in fact, I really do not watch alot of TV.  My understanding is the show is some sort of beauty contast/how to be a super model show, so what does all that have to do with Wicca?   Is it ratings season again or they just run out of things to talk about?

I wish you well

Tyra has two shows.. Top Model and theTyra Banks (talk show)

SirKenin -> RE: Casting spells (1/30/2007 11:15:19 AM)

If I got this right, the only spells Wiccans cast is to communicate with the Divine?  ie prayer?  Then why the hell do they not just pray?  Why all the stupidity that goes along with it?  I am having trouble wrapping my brains around that.

Zensee -> RE: Casting spells (1/30/2007 11:30:07 AM)

Perhaps you should get some more and better information before you go blasting something you don't understand. Apparently you felt it was acceptable to begin your rant well before the discredited source (a Tyra Banks show FFS) had finished making it's cynical ratings grab. I am sure you found plenty to support your prejudicial POV (as evidenced by your sig line). Quoting Rule as a secondary source isn't helping your case. You expect an internet chat forum to provide you with sound bite conclusions based on a flawed TV show viewed through a hostile filter. Not exactly an environment conducive to understanding.

Z.

Why does any religion have traditions that go along with praying?

What my "rituals" do for me, is more put my mind where it needs to be.  I can close out other things and go where I feel I am not letting anything of this world mess with what I am praying about, or giving thanks for.

Lets say I light a green candle,  I would use it for fertility.  By lighting it, I can focus my thoughts on wanting to have a baby, and praying for the gift of one.  That candle will not bring me a baby, but it helps me to put my prayer on what I am desiring in my heart.

There are so many worldly distractions that get in the way, when I sit at my altar.. my mind shuts those out and helps me to concentrate fully on the task at hand, be it giving thanks, or asking for a blessing of some sort.  Most don't do everything that each books says, we take what feels the best to us, and that's how we do it.

I have my altar..it has the Gold and Silver candles (representing the God and Goddess), it also has a white one (others are avail. depending on what my focus is).. I use that for me to draw the Spirit around me in protection.  I also have a crucifix, a pentagram, a stone, some grain, a flower, and water fountain..along with my incense.  Each wiccan will probably have something different, or change things along the way depending on what brings meaning to their place to pray.  I have my own way that I start my prayer...and that works for me, maybe not for anyone else.

The same could be asked of Christians, Buddhists, or pretty much any other religion out there...all have their own "rituals" whether they realize it or not.

Why do christians use statues and icons and prayer beads and a cross and whatever, instead of just praying?

Quite. I do not know anything about wicca. I was just responding to SK's comments about the show he watched.

And another good post by Drea.

Wiccan is a system of belifes,  you were somewhat correct, though it is not pinpointed to when Gerald Gardner refined his "wicca" which borrows heavily on many cultures. It was somewhere between 1939 and 1952. Magic is a tool which can be used by anyone, be they wiccan, catholic, jew.... Magic and spellcast are not "part and parcel" with any system of belife.

Ritualisum, it just brings focus, brings on closer to the ideal they wish to obbtain, whatever that may be. No different then when Christians pray. Wiccans just do so in a different way and, it is their right to do so. If it isn't for you then it is't for you, so be it. I do think writers like silver raven wolf give wiccan and in so off way witches a bad name. Wicca and Witchcraft are NOT the same thing.

also  alot of the satanists  I have met have believed in spell casting   useing it as a means to rid themselves of  emtions that are harmfull to them  such as excess anger  or lust.   they use the emtiotion energy in the spell work  and cast it toward the person,    if something comes of it great if not  oh well  at least the emtion was relased.

Very true, old old magic incorporates using the somatic table of emotions, magicians and village elders have been using rituals for thousands of years as a means of tricking or defeating the negative emotional energies which all living things create, the visualisation of heaven, hell, angels and demons are just projections of what is inside all of us, unfortunately some people take it way too literally, i'm sure the person they called Jesus wouldn't have wanted a religion created from his teachings to be so warped through time and to go against everything he stood for. Also good part about Satan and the meaning of, as I understood it a 'satan' was a being sent by God to hinder an act of man sort of like a gremlin in the works if you will, you will find if you dig deep into the histories of where these things come from that they are all aberrations borrowed from other civilisations and so much has been lost with war and destruction that we are only left with stories handed down.

Many rituals are over complex and there is a good reason for this, changing conciousness is all part of the process, either becoming excited to a level of 'no mind' or to meditate where you shut everything off is necessary in some orders of craft, basically we have to stop thinking and let the true will come forward, thats why some rituals require tedious or barbaric practices.

SirKenin -> RE: Casting spells (1/30/2007 1:11:48 PM)

Ok, I get the focusing thing.  That makes sense.  By the way, I do not get that prayer bead horseshit either, for what it is worth.  I can buy the belief in higher powers thing.  I am cool with that.  I can buy the desire to communicate with them.  I am also cool with that.  How they might want to do it seems a bit sketchy to me, but not out of the realm of possibility.  This spell casting stuff is a load of horseshit though.  They need to get over themselves.  The universe, in specific karma, takes care of people.  Not a little Wiccan voodoo.

As for Wicca as a whole, it was created in 1954 by Gardner, an English civil servant, out of beliefs conjured up largely in the 1920's.  There is nothing "ancient" about it.

However, that notwithstanding, I found those people on TV to be a complete joke.  Personally when I pray I do not find a need for a focal point, nor do I conjure up rituals in order to do it.  I just simply ask, and I never ask for any harm to come to anyone else.

This "threefold" stuff is not a Wiccan concept.  That dates back millenia, and is more commonly known as "karma".  It sounds like Gardner "borrowed" it.

lol!  I bet a lot of people would.  Maybe you throw spheres at each other like they did in The Covenant.  Stretch out their arms and throw someone across the room after their eyes turn black.   I dunno.  Who the hell knows.  hehe

WyrdRich -> RE: Casting spells (1/30/2007 2:51:20 PM)

What's the good of being a Witch/Warlock if you can't do a little magick at need?  Spells are kind of like recipes, but the critical ingredient is energy.  LOTS of energy.  Most people who get into this are looking for shortcuts, hence, they fail to do anything more than create a market for colored candles and hooded robes.  Posers.

A spell to kill your neighbors barking dog always works better if you throw poisoned meat over the fence as part of the ritual.

Monty Python's Take on how to determine if you are a witch.

"How Do You Tell a Witch?": Today's Lesson in Logic from Monty Python
MONKS: [chanting] Pie Iesu domine, dona eis requiem.
[bonk]
Pie Iesu domine,...
[bonk]
...dona eis requiem.
[bonk]
Pie Iesu domine,...
[bonk]
...dona eis requiem.
CROWD: A witch! A witch! [bonk] A witch! A witch!
MONKS: [chanting] Pie Iesu domine...
CROWD: A witch! A witch! A witch! A witch! We've found a witch! A witch! A witch! A witch! A witch! We've got a witch! A witch! A witch! Burn her! Burn her! Burn her! We've found a witch! We've found a witch! A witch! A witch! A witch!
VILLAGER #1: We have found a witch. May we burn her?
CROWD: Burn her! Burn! Burn her! Burn her!
BEDEVERE: How do you know she is a witch?
VILLAGER #2: She looks like one.
CROWD: Right! Yeah! Yeah!
BEDEVERE: Bring her forward.
WITCH: I'm not a witch. I'm not a witch.
BEDEVERE: Uh, but you are dressed as one.
WITCH: They dressed me up like this.
CROWD: Augh, we didn't! We didn't...
WITCH: And this isn't my nose. It's a false one.
BEDEVERE: Well?
VILLAGER #1: Well, we did do the nose.
BEDEVERE: The nose?
VILLAGER #1: And the hat, but she is a witch!
VILLAGER #2: Yeah!
CROWD: We burn her! Right! Yeaaah! Yeaah!
BEDEVERE: Did you dress her up like this?
VILLAGER #1: No!
VILLAGER #2 and 3: No. No.
VILLAGER #2: No.
VILLAGER #1: No.
VILLAGERS #2 and #3: No.
VILLAGER #1: Yes.
VILLAGER #2: Yes.
VILLAGER #1: Yes. Yeah, a bit.
VILLAGER #3: A bit.
VILLAGERS #1 and #2: A bit.
VILLAGER #3: A bit.
VILLAGER #1: She has got a wart.
RANDOM: [cough]
BEDEVERE: What makes you think she is a witch?
VILLAGER #3: Well, she turned me into a newt.
BEDEVERE: A newt?
VILLAGER #3: I got better.
VILLAGER #2: Burn her anyway!
VILLAGER #1: Burn!
CROWD: Burn her! Burn! Burn her!...
BEDEVERE: Quiet! Quiet! Quiet! Quiet! There are ways of telling whether she is a witch.
VILLAGER #1: Are there?
VILLAGER #2: Ah?
VILLAGER #1: What are they?
CROWD: Tell us! Tell us!...
BEDEVERE: Tell me, what do you do with witches?
VILLAGER #2: Burn!
VILLAGER #1: Burn!
CROWD: Burn! Burn them up! Burn!...
BEDEVERE: And what do you burn apart from witches?
VILLAGER #1: More witches!
VILLAGER #3: Shh!
VILLAGER #2: Wood!
BEDEVERE: So, why do witches burn? [pause]
VILLAGER #3: B--... 'cause they're made of... wood?
BEDEVERE: Good! Heh heh.
CROWD: Oh yeah. Oh.
BEDEVERE: So, how do we tell whether she is made of wood?
VILLAGER #1: Build a bridge out of her.
BEDEVERE: Ah, but can you not also make bridges out of stone?
VILLAGER #1: Oh, yeah.
RANDOM: Oh, yeah. True. Uhh...
BEDEVERE: Does wood sink in water?
VILLAGER #1: No. No.
VILLAGER #2: No, it floats! It floats!
VILLAGER #1: Throw her into the pond!
CROWD: The pond! Throw her into the pond!
BEDEVERE: What also floats in water?
VILLAGER #1: Bread!
VILLAGER #2: Apples!
VILLAGER #3: Uh, very small rocks!
VILLAGER #1: Cider!
VILLAGER #2: Uh, gra-- gravy!
VILLAGER #1: Cherries!
VILLAGER #2: Mud!
VILLAGER #3: Churches! Churches!
VILLAGER #2: Lead! Lead!
ARTHUR: A duck!
CROWD: Oooh.
BEDEVERE: Exactly. So, logically...
VILLAGER #1: If... she... weighs... the same as a duck,... she's made of wood.
BEDEVERE: And therefore?
VILLAGER #2: A witch!
VILLAGER #1: A witch!
CROWD: A witch! A witch!...
VILLAGER #4: Here is a duck. Use this duck. [quack quack quack]
BEDEVERE: We shall use my largest scales.
CROWD: Ohh! Ohh! Burn the witch! Burn the witch! Burn her! Burn her! Burn her! Burn her! Burn her! Burn her! Burn her! Ahh! Ahh...
BEDEVERE: Right. Remove the supports! [whop] [clunk] [creak]
CROWD: A witch! A witch! A witch!
WITCH: It's a fair cop.
VILLAGER #3: Burn her!
CROWD: Burn her! Burn her! Burn her! Burn! Burn!...
BEDEVERE: Who are you who are so wise in the ways of science?
ARTHUR: I am Arthur, King of the Britons.
BEDEVERE: My liege!
ARTHUR: Good Sir Knight, will you come with me to Camelot, and join us at the Round Table?
BEDEVERE: My liege! I would be honored.
ARTHUR: What is your name?
BEDEVERE: Bedevere, my liege.
ARTHUR: Then I dub you Sir Bedevere, Knight of the Round Table.

out.

LadyEllen -> RE: Casting spells (1/30/2007 3:07:00 PM)

Magic works. I've done blind tests with cures for long term conditions, and it works. I've invoked wyrd (karma, not Rich), and it works. I've done all sorts, (except to make people do something against their will), and it works.

But its not for everyone, and its not something you read a book about and then can do. And neither does one need special clothes, weird jewellery or other paraphernalia, though some find it helps. And its not to be used lightly. It requires a lot of commitment to learn and to perform; far more I would venture, than the average new ager would have any notion about, despite their often juvenile aspirations, even more commitment to perform properly and for the right motives. And its nothing to do with Harry Potter and the like.

You dont have to believe a word of it of course. And thats fine. It still works.

E
