Yeah, I knew what you meant.  In fact, I thought it provided some much needed levity on this thread.

Pssst!  I'm blonde too!

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Jesus please protect me from your followers.... (2/10/2007 8:58:13 AM)

I dont personally find it offensive, but I also understand it. Jesus in this instance could easily be substituted with any other religious belief system's icon, and it would mean the same.  And probably offend as many, and have as many others that didnt think tat way.
Its a jab at getting protection from all of those who are trying to push their religion on others. Since the majority of the religions known for that sort of overzealous outreach are mainly in one form or another followers of Jesus, thats why it was chosen.
And, like most things you lobby to get rid of, the more people who complain that he shold remove the tag line, the more likely DG is never to get rid of it.

My 2 cents

It's a JOKE. do you get this upset at blonde jokes? Polish jokes? In Egypt they tell sa'iidi jokes. In Riyadh they tell Yemeni jokes.

As far as what I meant... it's that the ones most offended, are the ones who are so uptight and with no sense of humor, that THEY are the ones that are most likely to come after one, whispering their hate and death threats in anonymous calls in the night. And yes. I've been there. I had to flee my home in the wee hours with my young daughter, leaving most of our possessions behind. Some of them were people I considered friends. I will never forget that Christians are most worst and deadliest enemies, no matter how friendly they may seem or how close they may get to me, they may be seeking to find a way to harm me. I don't hide who I am, nor do I live in fear/paranoia... but I am smart. I keep protection in my home and my car and in my purse, and have a camera phone in hopes that I may get some pictures off of any attackers. My landlord and employers know who I am, so that I don't have to fear anyone trying to get me evicted or fired.

So... yeah. I really, REALLY relate to that tag line. It's supposed to be funny. For me, it's a lot more than that.

Why do you say that. Would one have to be Black to take offense at "just a tag line" that was hurtful towards Black people?

Sanity -> RE: Jesus please protect me from your followers.... (2/10/2007 9:13:19 AM)

If it's "just a tagline" then why are you so worried and upset about it yourself...

I know you didn't direct this at me, Sanity, but here's the thing.  I doubt if domiguy "went out of his way"...to be mean and hurtful.  I think the very reason he started this thread is that some guy in another thread was screaming (all caps) about his tag line and just wouldn't let it die.  I thought domiguy was seriously confused as to why anyone would find it offensive.  Again, it's a tag line.  It doesn't mean anything.  Ok, now I've made my point.  I'll shut up.  Again, I'm not trying to flame you, I just think you've taken it too seriously.

Sanity -> RE: Jesus please protect me from your followers.... (2/10/2007 9:17:17 AM)

And they tell "Black jokes" way down South, too... that doesn't make them funny.

The rest of your post I'd chalk up to paranoia and an overactive imagination. Or at least, you've met up with some bad apples, and you're trying to s,mear an entire group on their account.

Point taken.  Now I'm trying to do exactly what I said was futile.  Argue with words on a screen.  Time for me to take my own advice.  *Poof*

DaddiesLilGirl06 -> RE: Jesus please protect me from your followers.... (2/10/2007 9:23:07 AM)

This is all I have to say after that....Domiguy....you go Man....right on. Its was funny....Keep the tag line. Take care and dont give a hoot what others think....

Sanity....It's a tagline....your the only one making a mountain out of a mole hill. Your opinion was appreciated but to continue to bash it is not an opinion. Everyone gave their opinion. Enough said. We heard you. No need to treat us all like children and keep repeating yourself. You sound like a broken record.

That be it.

I also know someone who has really had a cross burned on her lawn, down in Florida. Within the last 10 years, not in the 1950's. For both of us, btw, because we were pagan, not about BDSM or color, but religion.

I'm not paranoid. But learned a lesson. If you choose to be "different" then be prepared for the consequences. Bad things happen to good people, by people who believe they are doing what is right. Find a way to live life to the full, but keep your back covered.

In Morocco, they tell "farmer" jokes... and sometimes we will say to each other "what are you, a farmer?" now, some farmers in the US might take offense, but, they don't know the context from where it came (a Moroccan joke... equivalent to a "redneck" joke).

Which reminded me of something, I told my vanilla partner (the Moroccan -- now US citizen) this tag line, thought he'd find it funny, he didn't even get it! So, sometmes humor can be misunderstood, it's going to happen... Once I explained it, he thought it was funny, because it was in reference to the loud and obnoxious Christians we hear so much about and are confronted with daily in the news... these so called "bad apples" and not blasting the whole faith... the ones who take Jesus' name and smear it by their acts, deads and words. (Like a former friend of mine who "used to be" a lesbian and is now a preaching born-again, narrow-minded bigot so called "Christian" -- uggh!)

Well, besides, we have a sense of humor, he wouldn't have been offended if it said "Jesus, save me from Moroccans"  and I wouldn't find it offensive if it said "Jesus, save me from Bostonians"  -- Just my thoughts.

P.S. Jesus, please protect me from your loud followers, fundamentalists of all religions, narrow-minded bigots of all races and creeds, and humor-less people around the world.

out.

My ex husband was Egyptian (now American also), but not much sense of humor. I told him one of my fav. pagan jokes: "When God created man, She was only joking"

He was NOT amused <grin>

Oh, he has quite the sense of humor, but the "Jesus, Protect me from your followers" he didn't get until I explained it was about fundamentalists... he said something like yes, I could apply that to muslims and moroccans as well... lol

P.S. I'm not offended by blonde jokes... they crack me up! I'm blonde, and the jokes give me a good excuse for when I mess something up royally [;)]

Sanity -> RE: Jesus please protect me from your followers.... (2/10/2007 9:54:00 AM)

I suppose that with such a keen sense of humor you'll understand how funny it is the way blonde jokes make all women seem totally stupid...

hot1 -> RE: Jesus please protect me from your followers.... (2/10/2007 9:57:09 AM)

LOL...Baby...I am blond and I love blond jokes....actually use them to get things done that people wouldn't normally do.

And is like a newfie joke or a redneck joke....noone can tell a blond joke better than a blond.....a newfie joke better than a newfie....a redneck joke better than a redneck...etc etc

FemmeOwner -> RE: Jesus please protect me from your followers.... (2/10/2007 10:06:14 AM)

I have this one tag line, that made somebody really come unglued on me.

"Cats prove that not everything in nature has a purpose."

Now, as a lifetime cat lover, human pet and rescue foster mom, I thought that was funny as hell. But this lady went on and on about how awful I was!!!!

Some people just really don't see humor in things. Cripes. I hope I don't wind up with a slave who has no sense of humor. He SO would not last long around me! I enjoy the little "snickers" in life... like seeing traffic at a 4-lane main road through town at a complete halt at rush hour, because the Canadian geese are walking across the road with their goslings all in a row. I'm not one of those honking and cursing, I'm on my phone calling all my friends out west who'll never believe it and taking pics on my cell to prove it.

Then there was this peregrine falcon in Montana once.....
