Me too, I saw it on the first post or two and wondered but was interupted before I could investigate.

If Eminent Domain is good enough to sieze OCCUPIED property to give to a shopping mall developer, I don't see why using it to seize UNOCCUPIED property which is in such disrepair there is no question of it's abandonment.

If the owners disagree, they can answer the summons to court. If they don't then tough shit.

Like I said, It's not going to happen, but it's an idea.

I agree with you on the issue of eminent domain...it is abused and we should fight against these abuses.  Property rights are just as important as human rights...it should be one of them actually-

But unoccupied properties have an owner...and it is the right of those owners to not occupy them.  As long as the taxes are paid I can do whatever I want with them.

Government should have NO right over the private property of its citizens. I hope it doesn't happen and it is a bad idea

farglebargle -> RE: Ending homelessness in America (2/7/2007 11:02:02 AM)

To me, it's assumed that any property being siezed would be quite in arrears, and all due process requirements would be satisfied.

You can choose to keep the property vacant, but you STILL need to keep the sidewalk shovelled. And when you don't, and the city crews do it for you, that gets tacked onto the tax bill.

Devilslilsister -> RE: Ending homelessness in America (2/7/2007 11:20:11 AM)

i think.......... let them be as they please.  If they wanted help, they could get it.  The government has so much help its pretty amazing at times.  They've got psych wards they'll commit you too - money they'll give you - food they'll give you - and if you wait long enough, they'll give you housing as well.  On top of that - they'll even pay for your college, your daycare, get the utility companies to make your electricty/telephone bills cheaper.....  Em, they'll help you find a job..  gah - there are tons of services out there.  Just have to find them and utilize them.

i had a friend up in Va who had a 3 story house, paid for BY the government and it was MUCH nicer/bigger then the apartment i lived in (not paid for by the gov).  Made me a bit grumpy at times.  LOL

I think the point is that the homeless rarely contribute to either parties coffers.

Or vote.

Actually If you round them up and give them cigarettes they will..

Charges of voter fraud and harassment are not new to Wisconsin. In 2000, a New York Democrat named Connie Milstein handed out cigarettes to the homeless in an effort to get their votes. When her shenanigans were first reported, then-chairman of the Democratic National Committee Joe Andrew said she was not a Democratic "heavy hitter" and was in Wisconsin on her own, as a concerned voter. Those claims were, well, hard to substantiate. Milstein was listed by the DNC as chairman of the party's "Major Supporters Committee" and had hosted a $25,000-per-person fundraiser for Al Gore at her Park Avenue residence. What's more, she was captured by a camera crew for a local Wisconsin station saying, ""I am here representing the Gore and Lieberman campaign and I was asked to get out the vote in Wisconsin." Milstein was not charged with felony voter fraud, but settled for a mere $5,000. (Not an amount likely to discourage someone who contributed $600,000 to Democrats in the 2000 election cycle alone.)

Sharing cigarettes with your friends is wrong?

About a year ago I watched a very interesting documentary on Showtime called Reversal of Fortune.  It was about a homeless man who was giving/found a $100,000.  The film followed him in the months after finding the money.  While the film is only one individuals experience, it was very interesting to watch.

You can catch it on Showtime from time to time, but it doesn't run very often, however if you have Showtime on Demand, it's on there much more.

France has just past a law making it a human right to have a roof over ones head and a place to call home. Whether that will force local councils free up the resources or make commercial owners of empty properties provide those homes is another matter. I wish Britain would do the same but with Blair in power, I can't see it.

He did, two and a half years ago in fact!

Property owners who leave their homes unoccupied for more than six months could from 6 July have them taken over by their local council to rent out for social housing.

The Empty Dwelling Management Order was introduced as part of the 2004 Housing Act.

I wish I could cheer about that until I read that new affordable social housing being built in Britain is pretty lamentable and this law is just appears to be a way of the government appearing to do something about an acknowledged problem. It's a pity Blair doesn't put the same effort into homelessness that he put into fox hunting. But then as an owner of five homes himself he wouldn't want to make too much effort to free up housing stock.

Anybody can get their house foreclosed on...but even in that event:  where are your parents?  your siblings?  the friends you've made throughout your life?  It is pretty hard to be homeless-

This country is full of homeless children ... more than we will ever know.

HydroMaster -> RE: Ending homelessness in America (2/7/2007 2:50:16 PM)

Well my question is?  If we open up all of those apartment, who's going to pay for them?  I think I lose enough of my income in taxes already.

farglebargle -> RE: Ending homelessness in America (2/7/2007 3:04:37 PM)

In answer to your question: The same place you got 100 Billion Dollars to throw away in Iraq.

This is the last paragraph from the wikipedia link:
On a December 1, 2006 airing of the Oprah Winfrey Show entitled: "Are You Ready For a Windfall?", Ted and the producer of the documentary were on the program to promote the documentary and speak on their account of the experiment. When asked by Oprah how much of the $100,000 he still had, Ted replied "none". Ted also mentioned that he is back homeless, and content with his current circumstances.

Thanks man!

HydroMaster -> RE: Ending homelessness in America (2/7/2007 6:52:43 PM)

Oh you mean what they spent on pizza, beer, and toilet seats.

farglebargle -> RE: Ending homelessness in America (2/7/2007 7:28:53 PM)

12 Billion Dollars ( KNOWN ABOUT SO FAR ) just being loaded into ISO containers and disappearing isn't pizza, beer, and b-52 toilet seats... It is crime so organized, Tony Soprano is jealous.

surrendermysoul -> RE: Ending homelesness in America (2/7/2007 7:29:41 PM)

i work for one of the largest homeless facility in my area. We serve approx. 700 people each night, 189 of them are children, which of course are accompanied by either a Mom, Dad or both parents. The faces of homelessness is changing, more than ever the numbers of families is rising due to unaffordable housing, low wages, living pay check to pay check and having one life altering tragety happen puts them on the streets. This is a huge problem in our society, in everyone's back yard.
