Last check at Shaws in downtown Boston (and I haven't checked in sometime now), I beleive they were around $6.99/lb (on sale) for the chicken lobsters (those small soft-shell kind, which I like better anyhow)...

The OP mentioned Whole Foods put the ban on them, they were probably a LOT more there per pound...

I grew up in the Boston, Mass area too in the 50's and 60's.
We'd have lobster in the summertime a lot when it was cheaper.
We'd just boil a big pot of water and toss them in, five minutes later they were done.
In those days they were probably $1.40 per pound. I wonder what they go for today?
That's one type of seafood that never seems to run out. They're everywhere!

That's not too bad factoring in inflation.
When I was stationed in Maine in the USCG we could go to the wholesalers on the docks and buy them right off the boat cheap before they were sent out to the supermarkets and fish markets and marked up in price.
It's funny, you'd see advertisements on the t.v. for that "Red Lobster" restaurant but there wearn't any in Maine.
There was a place in Ipswich, Mass that we used to go to occaisionally, "Woodman's" I think it was, they had excellent lobster and fried clams, scallops and haddock.
Oh, I grew up in Woburn, Mass.

small world... so did I!  but in the 70's and 80's

Devilslilsister -> RE: Lobster (2/9/2007 12:44:38 PM)

bah - you should see what else she eats.  Last night she was munching on slices of raw zuchini.  Shrimp, crab, sushi, fish, mushrooms (raw too), and other odd ball things.

But if you make spagetti she says "Ewwwwwwwwwwww - i want something else"  She for some really strange reason, thinks spagetti sauce is gross.  It gives me a complex.

My lil brother was eating escargo at the age of 12.  NOT that i would EVER feed that to my UM.  HA - she can get it from her grandpa and not kiss me for a week.

little ones eat strange things........ just have to not already implant in their heads what is good/bad and let them make up their own mind.  Usually they bounce off of their parents - except my wee one doesnt really.  I try and keep my judgements to myself.  (except for escargo)

Except for my complex about spagetti.  i'm constantly trying to convince her that it is yummy.

Geeeez, mine too...I'm the official spagetti maker in our house. As for the lobster....I don't like it with butter, just lemon juice...and then peculiarly enough, it tastes just like crab legs, with lemon juice..hmmm....at least I don't think it tastes like chicken.

Devilslilsister -> RE: Lobster (2/9/2007 3:08:49 PM)

Yeah........ i do the butter thing with the noodles, but i'm always put out by how unhealthy that is.  i love making the sauce - i throw in all sorts of good stuff.  Its the HEALTHIEST part of the meal!  Whatta freak!

Oh and we eat artichoke.  Gah, been so long since i had one, i almost forgot how good they were.  Can you BELIEVE how expensive artichoke hearts are??  Now thats just outrageous - just like price of lobster can be outrageous.  Course - so can alaskan king crab legs.... but mmmmmmmm

mixielicous -> RE: Lobster (2/9/2007 3:20:34 PM)

slip some veggies in there! i like my spaghetti with peas! no lie!

zucchini works too :) just dont let her know if you think its gross then she will too hehe

Try using the lobster bodies (and any leftover lobster, yah, like anyone every has any "left over") in the pasta sauce... mmmmmmm... and you get to use up something you would've thrown away... however, I take out the "tamale" first... nasty stuff that is, but, you get all the nice white meat that hides in the crevaces into your pasta sauce... I also like to add muscles to it too then...

farglebargle -> RE: Lobster (2/9/2007 3:25:01 PM)

Spaghetti Sauce ala Alton Brown.

Cans of Whole Tomatoes.

Separate Tomato Parts from liquid.

Roast Tomato Parts in oven.

Reduce Liquid in saucepan.

Recombine and hit with handheld stick blender, until desired consistency for the task at hand.

If they won't eat that, they won't eat anything.

Literally, That's all there is, kids. Done with dinner, then get ready for bed...

Devilslilsister -> RE: Lobster (2/9/2007 4:33:34 PM)

:::snickers:: i sneak all sorts of veggies in the sauce!  I loooooove putting spinach in it, but alas! She must know my trick...... ya know i never taste the pea's in the sauce.

Oooooooooooo i've been on this great big kick with Cilantro.  We've got it growing fresh and MAN i stick a wallap of that stuff in the sauce and you can literally Smell the cilantro.  (well heck, i've been sticking it in everything)

Damn good thing sniffing cilantro isnt bad for you = )

Lorelei115 -> RE: Lobster (2/9/2007 4:43:52 PM)

I always thought cilantro smells like soap. Not in a bad way, mind you, its a fresh, clean scent.

hot1 -> RE: Lobster (2/9/2007 4:46:47 PM)

I heard if you want to kill them "humanely" just put them in the fridge for a while, they go to sleep and then go about your business of how you want to do the deed.

I do hope that you mean "freezer."  Lobsters often live in 0C (32F) water.  Even if you put them in the freezer for a few hours (3 or more, depending on size) make sure to kill them immediately after taking them out - they may thaw back to life.

There is a trick of jabbing them with a needle in the back of the neck, but not just anywhere.  If no one shows you, most likely you'll just be jabbing the poor fucker with a needle.

And I would assume lobsters feel the same amount as a cow, chicken, or fish.  Now all you have to figure out is how much you value their suffering.

Yours,

benji

sensualmagirl -> RE: Lobster (2/9/2007 4:57:11 PM)

well, it was second-hand information... lol... freezer sounds like a much better idea though... but, again, I leave the killing part to someone else, I'll take care of the rest... Beef, Chicken and Pork comes cut-up and in clean, shiny plastic packages in the meat case at the store... lalalalalalalala *covering my eyes so as not to see what you typed* [;)]

gooddogbenji -> RE: Lobster (2/9/2007 4:59:28 PM)

I would have said they feel as much as humans do, but I know how many on this site feel about pain and the infliction thereof.

Yours,

benji

sensualmagirl -> RE: Lobster (2/9/2007 4:59:40 PM)

I love cilantro... speaking of sauce... you like muscles? now, some purists might get a bit upset, but I like the barilla tomato/basil sauce with some fresh cilantro to cook Muscles in... something about cilantro and tomato with seafood I like a lot.

I may be the first Mainer to have chipped in to this thread. I stopped eating lobster years ago and won't cook it, but if someone visits and has to have it, I'll take them out to a restaurant. I'm told that the least-painful option for cooking lobsters is to put them into the boiling water head first, so they are stunned immediately. I don't know. But yes, Benji, they can live quite a long time in the fridge -- they get flown all over the world every day, packed in ice, and seldom die in transit. So the freezer for a little while will be more effective.

When I was growing up, my parents made baked-stuffed lobsters maybe once a year (for visiting family dignitaries, I guess). That involved going to the dock to buy them, taking them home and letting the kids play with them (the claws were pegged; would have been more sporting to put our fingers and noses at risk) and then putting them on their backs in a baking dish, tails and claws under wires, and slicing them open, lengthwise, while they were still alive, in order to stuff them. The tails and claws went crazy. That's why you needed the wires.

Alternatively (if you didn't like the visitors that much and weren't willing to go to the trouble of bake stuffing the lobsters), you could boil them. That was fun, too -- for several minutes you got to listen while they thrashed around in the boiling water in their death throes. Steaming, the method of choice for clam bakes (always called clam bakes here in Maine, even if lobster is the main attraction), is even slower and more painful.

As I said, I stopped eating lobster quite a long time ago.

hot1 -> RE: Lobster (2/9/2007 5:12:04 PM)

Boiling is the most common way of cooking them I believe...I am orginally from New Brunswick...as well know for all fish as Maine most likely.

I used to love clams...til we went digging one day and they spit at me.....could never eat them again....lol

I guess my parents were sadists, then -- which explains a lot about me!

New Brunswick is beautiful. Better fish than we have here, too. An awful lot of the stuff sold as "Maine lobster" comes from Grand Manan.
