i realize this isn't Gorens forum so i might not get the best of replies, but i figured i had a better chance of actually making headway in this forum than *over there* ------>

so my question is, how did Gor become so much more philosophical than M/s/D/s? While 26 books obviously will lead to the depth of what they practice, why is it a general-ish consensus that people of the BDSM in M/s realm have lower standards when it comes to protocol/roles/commitment, even etiquette ... Why is it because i post on the BDSM thread i am a player, not committed for the long haul?

very curious [and no i do not of course think all people who are Gorean think this but it does seem to be a common trend, as is starting to be seen here in the poll Do you agree that some mainstream BDSM practices overlap the Gorean lifestyle?

i would hope for answers from people who might know a bit about their philosophy to answer .. so that i may avoid judgmental responses from fear of the unknown

Greetings..~smiles~

As one thats been on both sides of the fence post to some degree..from my experience the answer would be: nothing does if your solely looking at the word itself.

It takes the actual people to make anything come to light or have a shadow cast on it, and then that will only go as far as that person as the next person may shed something new.

Well Wishes

26 horribly written books not withstanding (there are probably just as many written about BDSM--good and bad), I don't feel it is.  But others might.  It could be because having to apply things from a non-earth society to an earth-society takes a lot more philisophical discussion on the 'right' way to do it.

Loraith certainly doesn't hold me to a lower standard--He holds me to His standard rather than following someone else's fiction-based mandate.  If my understanding of Gorean philosphy is correct, His honour and integrety as a man are supremely important, and what will define His standard.  Sometimes it clashes with societal standards...but it's hard to argue that a lot of Gor standards don't do the same.  How can His be less for 'going against the norm' if Gor in general does the same?

If someone thinks we're players, or less commited because we're non-Gorean, neither of us would really care.  Neither of us feel the need to prove anything to anyone.
The opposite is also true, some have taught me there is just as much chest-thumping and fantasy on that side of the fence as there is on this side.

How to write this not to offend anyone…

Without getting into opinions or debates of reality, Goreans live a certain fairly specific philosophy. This by its definition lends itself to be able to have a more focused public presentation. People in regular mundane BDSM are all over the place in their beliefs and practice so there is little to no focus or common beliefs to get all romantically philosophical about.

One is not more real then the other and those who profess that have just never graduated from the high school clique mentality of feeling the need to be better by tearing others down, which is also too prevalent in both groups.

A question like this always invokes the same response from me.

If only I could always remember to make it so short and concise.

Something only has meaning when someone puts meaning to it.

I can't answer for others why there is meaning in something.  Those are the people that should be asked.

You're going to have to show me evidence that it did/is first.

It's not lower standards, it's different standards.  Goreans place a premium on actions and follow social codes of order.  BDSMers tend to place a premium on individual choice.

Gorians spend a great deal of time online discussing how real they are offline.  It is easy to talk of high moral codes, of being a warrior, etc.  It all reminds me of Republicans/Right wing christians.  Behind closed doors, they do the exact opposite of whatever it is they are busy thumping their chests about in public.

This is like asking how did McDonalds come to make better hamburgers than everyone else? The answer is they don't, but there are standardized processes and large scale marketing so you at least have some idea of what you're getting. Some people prefer restaurant chains, while others prefer home cooking, but it's all still food.

Of course, some gorean evangelists are likely to drop by and tell you it IS much more philosophical than you could find with the unenlighten masses like us, but zealots usually are brainwashed like that. You would get similar responses if you asked what makes one religion more philosophical or righteous than another too.

My mother used to say that you don't make yourself bigger by making other people smaller. Seems the Goreans you've talked to haven't learned this.

The truth is that to any nonGor type, Gor is a joke. Based on a bunch of poorly written fantasy novels nearly 50 years ago that only appealed to teenage boys back them for wank material. So they go around saying they are more true because they know everyone else laughs at them. It's a way of shoring up their shaky self esteem.

Gor is not more special than anything else, it is a lifestyle that fit some pepole and dont fit other pepole, it is valuble, inportant and wonderful for those it fit, and not so grate for those that it dont fit and so is every other lifestyle.

I see no difference in living a life based upon Gor, Aesop's Fables, The Bible, or any other numerous books I could think of off the top of my head.

Any "philosophy" that wants to use as pillars the notions that  men are better than women and that all women want to serve as sex slaves to men has a rather weak foundation.

My impression of it is that it is a useful tool for predators who prey on people who have not yet learned to distinguish between someones words and someone's deeds.
