Ok, so can somebody explain to me just why I had to click to the second page in the link before I get enough information to figure out that the guy who murdered those people in the Utah mall was a Muslim? http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17124042/ In these times, that kinda seems like an important tidbit.

I am wondering something, when people go postal that are white middle aged American men, do we annouce their religious affiliations? Why should it even be on page two unless it is germane to why he went nutso?

It surely depends on his motive for the shooting doesnt it? If he did it because of some misunderstanding of his religion, then his religion might be relevant. If he did it because he was pissed over something otherwise, then his religion is as irrelevant as his eye colour E

The story states that the motive is unknown at this time, so do not think it is relevant at all if he was Jewish, Christian, Muslim, a Moonie, or a Warlock[:D]

It is? Do you have any proof that there was a political motivation for his meltdown? If so, please produce it. For all any of us know he could have had some reaction to medication, been delusional, flunked a class, lost a girlfriend. You are making wild wild assumptions about this with no evidence.

I wanted to add that this kid was from Bosnia, perhaps the war there gave him some form of PTSD that made him do this.. it has been known to happen that people from warzones freak out. Why jump to some conclusion that he is a terrorist, are you that afraid of terrorism that you think every Muslim is one?

Ummmm.... is it an act of terrorism if I shoot people at work for wearing white shirts? (actually, that might qualify... If I wanted to scare people into not wearing white shirts) It's only terrorism if the motive is to inspire fear. If it's a nutjob going ballistic because his coffee is cold, that aint terrorism, regardless of religion. Besides, even if it is terrorism, unless that terrorism is religious in nature, the religion is insignificant. Take my anti-white shirt campaign above. Still trying to figure out why his religion makes any difference to what he did. It seems to me that living through a civil war would be more likely to have psychologically damaged the killer rather than him being motivated through religious zealotry.

Lemme see, guy walks in the door of a mall and starts shooting... I'd say his motivation is a desire to kill. I frankly don't give a rats ass about what led him to it. The facts aren't in yet. That didn't stop the media from putting out all kinds of complete crap about any other subject they call breaking news. Remember the rapes and murders happening right in front of police officers during Katrina? My question isn't about why he did it, but about why the angle doesn't even seem to be getting an exploration.

I would ask why we are not announcing the religious affiliations of the family members of other spree killers, why just Muslim ones? I am sure most spree killers were related to a Christian or were raised that way... why is it only important if the kid is a Muslim. Those Columbine teens, I wonder what religion their parents were?

Every journalism teacher I ever had stressed that 3/4 of the word 'news' is 'New.' Considering that we are presently involved in a war against crazy people of the Muslim persuasion, and we haven't previously had a problem with Muslim spree killers in this country, it seems they don't teach that in journalism class anymore. This strikes me as self-censorship by the media. Worse, it smells of Prior Restraint.

You have to find the little button to the next page to find it. It's never even said outright. That's the problem. You can't turn on a cable news channel at night without hearing those talking heads endlessly speculating about what MIGHT have happened, what the motive MIGHT be. Every time I hear Nancy Grace utter a syllable, I'm glad I chose NOT to pursue a career in journalism. Now we have a Muslim go on a killing spree in a mall and people can't even find it in the article. The knee-jerk reaction is right there. Why aren't the tabloid, trash talkers all over this?

You may not care why he did it, but I would imagine the following bit is important in his reasoning. I found no reference stating that he was Muslim.
