I don't have any right off the cuff, but a good way to move on from heartbreak is to get the heart happy doing something/someone else.
Richard Jeni has a wonderfully funny routine about not listening to love songs (which are intended to make you commit suicide) when you break up.     M

Thanks for the advice, BTF.  Tonight'll see me playing guitar in a small bar, that's my 'something' else.  I know the 'someone' else thing always ends up messy, ugly, etc so I avoid it.

I don't usually let emotions out very easy, so a bottle of wine and a good heartjerking tune is just the ticket for me sometimes.

I'd disagree, respectfully- IMX, the best way to deal with it is to wallow in it-make a playlist of all the songs that remind you, and listen to it day and night, till you are sick of your own brokenheart and numb (generally about eight years)...

To that end:

By your Side- Sade
I Want You- Sophie B Hawkins
Ain't no sunshine- the Neville Brothers (or the original Bill WithersVerison)
Feels Like Rain- John Hyatt
White Flag- Dido
Iris- GooGoo Dolls
Veracruz- Warren Zevon
Everybody Hurts- REM
Leaving New York- REM
Where are you tonight?- Bob Dylan
Pictures of You- the Cure
Coldest Night Of the Year- Bruce Cockburn
Angelina- Bob Dylan
Hold On- Tom Waits
Your Lastest Trick- Dire Straits
Superman- Five for Fighting
Sweetheart like You- Bob Dylan
Don't Fall Apart on Me Tonight- Aaron Neville (or Dylans orginal)
Purple Rain- Prince
Sweetest Thing- U2
Stainsbury Girls- Chris Rea

Stay warm,
Lawrence

So you're as much a masochist as you are said to be a sadist huh?

Okay, I'll add my broken hearted melodies I used to listen to until I realized unrequited love is a waste of time, energy and tears...  Maybe it's not so much unrequited as it is what you thought was love really wasn't....

1)  You'll never find (Lou Rawls)
2)   By the way (Barbara Streisand)
3)   All Woman (Lisa Stansfield)
4)   I'd Rather Go Blind (different singers, except I don't remember the man who recorded it last and made me fall in love with it)
5)   Make It Like It Was (Regina Belle)
6)   Everybody Hurts (R.E.M)
7)   Loverman (Sarah Vaughn)
8)   Superwoman (Karyn White)
9)   The End Of a Love Affair (Chaka Khan)
10)  Good Morning Heartache (Lena Horne)
There is soooooo much more, as I was once an incurable (apparently now almost cured ) romantic.         M

Excellent list!

I am not such a sadist as to inflict my self on others, so by wallowing in it, I think I get it out of my system faster...

Stay warm,
Lawrence

No Woman No Cry ~ Bob Marley

Im not sure that is a breakup song.

I think it is one of the most beautifully heartfelt "You are all I need to survive" love songs ever written.

I get all misty thinking about the lyrics.

But then, my opinion is suspect because I think the most profound love story ever put on celluloid is Harold And Maude.

Not a break up song, but "you are what I need to survive" is how I feel about somebody after a non-consensual breakup that requires heartbreak music. The song makes me feel all sad and choked up, yet at the same time uplifted.

P.S. I am not sure if I agree about Harold and Maude being #1, but damned if I can think of one that beats it.

Of course, the songs which really explain how I feel after a break up include...

Vandals remake of Heartbreak Hotel
Dead Kennedys Your Emotions
Offspring She Has Issues
Guns N Roses I Used To Love Her

The list goes on.

I probably need therapy.
