We share something in common, I am the liberal one out of all my siblings... I even managed to convince my mom that being gay was ok, and that Jesus may not be her savior. Now my Fundie brother has problems with me sending mom to Hell, but I am confident that he will be there too

Do you mess with his head and list the point for point matchup in philosophy between USAsian Fundamentalists and the Taliban/Al Quaida Fundamentalists?

But of course! He is fun to play with... sometimes he just sits in my house and grins and I can tell he is thinking " My sister is demon possessed, I wonder if I can kidnap her and perform a 'laying on of hands' ceremony on her?"

Last time he was here we got into a Bibical text argument about the garden of eden and sin. He was going on and on about "original sin", and I asked him "How come the word 'sin' never appears in the Garden of Eden story?" He swore the word "sin" was in there.

I pulled out my King James Version and told him "find it". He spent 15 minutes looking for it, and then said... "It's implied".. Ha Ha

I know the question wasn't aimed at me, but now I'm fascinated by it.

While you've got Genesis open, have you asked him which creation account is correct? That should be fun.

Well you know KJV was written by LIEberals! And man, the simple fact: Cain, Able, Eve... EWWWWW....

Explains a lot about Tennessee, though.

He knows about the "doublets"...lol... we have talked about that too. I am fascinated with the Bible, although I have not read it in a long time. It is like LOTRs, or The Legend of Gilgamesh.. truly riveting reading... there is more sex and violence in the "good book" than in the General Discussion section of CM,  maybe that is where I developed my masochistic side

You might like The Red Tent by Anita Diamant. It's the story of Jacob from the women's prespective.

Yeah, I do.  Used to party with a guy who pulled the containers down there.  Nothing but the finest, at his place. The money isn't the issue, it's the implied social status of 'Dr. Sinergy' vs. 'baggage handler Sinergy.'  I think that speaks of some serious dominance.

And just for the record, it's only a matter of time before that union gets busted like so many others.

Xenophobia is an ugly trait.

This was the entirety of my post on your thread last night.  It's a general statement, and yet, you played the 'woe-is-me' name calling card.  You asked why the media didn't mention the boy's religion right up front--'Xenophobia is an ugly trait' was my answer.  Interesting that you internalized it, though.  It illustrates that people will read into things what they will for their own reasons, and, in a round-about way, answers some of your questions on this thread.

Arpig, that's an interesting theory.  Definitely worth looking into.

The book was recommended to me by both my Catholic mother and a woman friend from the liberal Episocopal church I used to attend, so I knew I had to check it out. Loved it!

Because our ability to reason is not detached from our instincts like the hunger for power, and the need to be with the group most like yourself to feel safe.
...And because these statements are hate and ignorance based.

It's difficult to make ANY observation on race these days without someone screaming racism and ignorance - unless you happen to be from the crowd who screams it. Case in point, a student leader at NC Central was quoted by AP I believe it was as stating that the players should be tried for rape regardless of whether or not they did it because it would make up for past transgressions by whites.

Barely made the news. Turn it around, it would be splashed from one corner of the country to the next, and the unfortunate soul who uttered it would not only be socially castrated, but probably be infamous for the rest of his or her life.

About 15 years ago I witnessed an accident at a stop light. Truck barreled through the red, struck a car passing through the green. I waited and gave my statement to the police since I was the only observer present at the time. I told them what I saw and went on my way. Somewhere around a month or so later, I saw the guy from the car again. He thanked me profusely for telling the truth.

I was... bewildered to say the least. What else would you tell? He was black. The truck driver was white. And that was to make a difference? Truth is truth. It's not shaded one color or the next. A truthful statement or observation is not racist, nor borne of hatred regardless of whether it steps on toes or sensitivities.  I'm not here to pick on option 1 above though. Much the same is true for 2 and 5.  People really don't want truth.

As for the rest, aids is about useless as a biological agent in military applications. The incubation period is too long, the path of the disease too time consuming. Just as ebola is about useless because of reasons exactly the opposite. It kills too quickly, is difficult to spread, and as such can be contained with minimal quarantine. Neither fits the bill for as a good bio weapon.

When it comes to the Holocaust, well, I think one would do better trying to deny breathing because you'd have to be about brain dead to forget.

Islam is undeniably linked to violence. Doesn't mean all muslims are violent and untrustworthy. It means segments of that particular religion both revel in violence and use it for their own purposes.

All of the above generally fit into one category though, and that's related to the fact that if people practiced minding their own business rather than everyone elses, the world would probably be a better place.

Keep hoping, Mr. CorporateThug.

The last time the shipping companies tried to do that it cost the US economy 56 billion dollars.

And Monkeybody told the shipping companies to shut the hell up and negotiate fairly with the union.

Actually, Valeca, I was using your individual quote to illustrate a trend.  I'm barely competent with this here 'puter thing (no hydraulics to finesse) and yours was the one I happened to grab for my reply.  Sorry.  When I'm referring to someone in particular, I usually mention them by name (shortened most of the time, really pisses Thompsonx off).  I can't expect you would have known that.  Please see my general apology on page 2.

So, Julia, if you're still reading, what topics just sorta never got discussed the last time you were in classes?  It seems like you would have brushed up against some fairly delicate topics on the way to an Anthropology degree?

Actually I had to sit and seethe as I heard all manner of inappropriate discourse in anthropology courses that were open to all majors... just because one is getting an advanced degree does not mean one is intelligent, knowledgeable, and not racist.

Many of my classes were just us anthro folk, and I did not agree with all of them, but none of them were racist.

I have had professors that were right wing (not in anthro, we are all a bunch of Marxists.. ha ha). And I respected their classes, was allowed to state my opinions, and earned my As and their respect.
