Good post. I know there's a guy right around the corner from me, on the next block. I don't have unmentionables, but if I did I'd be watching them a lot closer than I was before he moved in (he's classified as a pedophile). I knew this before (he moved in last Summer, and he actually registered as a sex offender, which of course not all of them do when they move, regardless of the fact it's required here).

In my town, there is currently a movement to extend the 2000 ft. law (they can't live closer to a school than 2000 ft. away) to out-right banishment, and there is a big civil rights question that seems to be arising. I am not sure how I feel about this, actually, and can see both sides of the issue, to a degree anyway.

Everyone seems to be for that here (Nebraska) until they figure out that all they are doing is pushing these guys (and  gals) into the next neighboring town (and then those folks who live there are of course, objecting to that). I mean, they do have to live somewhere - but if I had an unmentionable and this guy was next-door, justified or not, I know I'd probably be nervous.

I've been raped before, and I know they never caught the man who did it (at least not to my knowledge). I'd want to know if he was living in my neighborhood if they had, though. I mean, I know it's horrible, probably, to be labelled that way but hell - don't do the crime, if you don't want the label.

Nice. I found someone who lives in my apartment building. Kinda creepy.

Yanno,
there are a lot of sex offenders whose info is not on that site. I hope no one becomes complacent if their area seems safe, or goes on some kind of crusade against someoen who has not posed a threat to them.

This is true, they just keep pushing them around into other neighborhoods. Just like drug dealers. They way of America, let somebody else deal with it....
Is there a solution?

Maryland even gives you a map to their homes......

I did another search and your state should have their own registry online. I was just not aware there was such a thing as an online registry until this link showed up. My state listing had more listings than familywatchdog, but we should know there are means to be aware and use anything reliable that we need to.

Remember, all of us are sex offenders here...

Sodomy, oral sex, public sex, exposure, not to mention depraved sex acts.

That said, I think all sex offenders should be shot on sight, no mercy for those depraved scum!

Meh, just teach your daughters to shoot straight, and make sure they're armed when they leave the house is the best way to ensure a girls safety.

Better yet, take them to Karate classes at the age of four. I did my daughter and I never worry about her.

Yeah - Teenagers with guns makes the word a whole lot safer for everyone.

Not!

If you haven't raised your children well enough to handle firearms responsibly, have you raised them at all?

If firearms are such a bad idea, why does every police officer carry one?

And 911's a joke.

My Daddy is going to teach me how to use a firearm when I visit him in Texas next month. I told him I was using a Swiss Army Knife for protection, and he said it's just not gonna do the trick, and offered to teach me how to shoot a gun. We are going to a firing range.

I'm sure your father will have all the advice you'll ever need. What *I* like to do with the girls, is shoot a winchester '94 lever action, ( The 'trapper' model has a 16" barrel, which is nicely sized for the smaller ones... ) and chambered for .38 special/.357 magnum. 38 is good for general target shooting, and is light enough to not make anyone flinch, while you can load up a .357 for some serious work, if necessary.

I will tell my Daddy what you just said (or ask him to read this post of yours). Thanks for the information, farglebargle.

Thank you very much for posting this website.  i just found out that a registered sex offender lives on my street, i'm at 303 and he is at 311.  He was convicted of Indecent Liberty with a minor.  Not sure just what that is but, it doesn't sound good.  It's creepy, knowing he is only a few houses away but, it's better to be aware of the potential threat to our child.  i will check it periodically and also share it with others.  Again, thank you.

I agree with Simply Michael when it comes to saying what might be considered a sexual offense is culturally relative - especially when one considers the kind of message board we are all on here, but - when it comes to unmentionables, I draw a line in the sand, so to speak.

I even can feel  kind of sorry for folks whose behavior has been proven to be so compulsively driven (and usually because they were themselves abused as unmentionables), but the victims in these instances have no say whatsoever about it happening, and are just too young for that not to have some lasting negative impact on them, and I just can't get myself to change my mind about feeling that way about it.

I also know that Simply Michael was not saying it is okay, either (if he's wondering).

I feel kinda bad for the guy who tries to do something to my daughter.

I have seen her fight...

Sinergy

p.s. on a related note, sexual predators look for certain non-verbal and physical cues to determine who would be a good target.  My kid exhibits none of them.

PandorasInspratn -> RE: Keepin'It Real - Locate Offenders in your area! (2/21/2007 9:35:05 PM)

I have also taught my children how to protect themselves, though I am not satisfied and feel totally at ease with them when they are out there own.  I have also taught them not to get cocky enough to think they are invincible.  I have seen my oldest fight too, but there is always someone out who's better.  And if someone is intent on doing you harm....  they will try very hard to find a way to do it.  And you can't assume you are better either.  Just don't put yourself in a situation that makes it easy for them to get you, just because you've been taught how to fight.

I'm a big believer in taking precautions and learning to defend yourself, but I'm a bigger believer in not letting your head get ahead of the situation.

edited to add:  sometimes predators go against the grain of what they are supposed to be, and someone who fights makes an awfully tasty target, if only just to knock them down.
