Hiya :)

Been a while since I have written or posted but thats life for you.

However I was browsing around as I normally do, then I had an interest in peoples names.
How much weight would a persons user name hold sway in terms of you communicating with them?

I have a slight problem when I see the the name "Masterjoebloggs" for example, I was always under the impression that being Dom/Master whatever came through in your personitly and you didn't need to broadcast it, and sadly I see them as a bit of a try hard, so I'm opening this up to the floor.

So whats in a name for you then?

WoS

P.S I did try a search but couldn't see anything, apart from the guidelines for making a name.

I'd say it's about 20%.

I don't NOT open an email from someone no matter what their name is, but I do have a game where I try and guess information about someone before I open the email and check their profile to see how close I came.

I'm a really good guesser.

So, it's not so much the name, it's the personality which causes the name.

Not so much for me, i think.

When i get an e-mail from someone, i always check their profile, and that's the thing that holds more weight than their name.

Gosh I've been criticized before, for not having my name in all lower case letters, because I am a submissive (although I am also a Switch, so that negates that argument, I guess).

The fact is, that when I joined, I didn't know anything about anyone putting their name in lower-case letters sometimes (maybe most of the time) if they were submissive, and by the time I realized it, people had started to identify me with my name written as it was, so I decided to just leave it alone.

Plus, I don't think it makes that much difference, and I have Daddy, so am not real worried about it. But maybe there are other people out there who think I am an arrogant submissive, because my nic-name here on this board starts with a capital letter, I don't reallly know.

Personally, as far what I appreciate, names like makemehard, etc., tell me something about a person's -

1) Judgment (or maybe just taste)

2) Priorities

Maybe that's a judgmental thing to say, but it's how I feel. And it's not necessarily insulting, either - if those are their priorities, why would they be insulted?

It might not stop me from answering a letter from them, but it definitely gives me pause.

On the other hand, I don't mind a merely descriptive nic-name (without blatant sexual connotations), and I also just don't care what other females do, as far as this goes, because I am straight and was never looking for a female partner.

most of my messages are stored in my bulk mail (which i sometimes forget to check) and i'll look at the profile first before reading the message. sometimes i get messages from other Doms who seem to ignore that i'm bigsambaman's daughter and not looking for another or that i'm here for "friends only".  i've met (online and offline) quite a few interesting people from here and chat with them regularly. it's the others who message me weird requests that i have a problem with.

Your brain processes information and forms an opinion whether consciously or subconsciously. Seeing a person’s chosen name has some affect because of the nature of a profile there is just only so much information at your disposal.

That being said, I know for myself my name is Lin and not toservez, and the name chosen was more about a minute of agony coming up with a screen name then some deep meaning or message. I would not want others to put too much emphasis on my screen name so I certainly try not to put too much emphasis on their screen names.

Almost all names I read I am very neutral on and I had zero criteria that would attract me or repel me based on a screen name. Of course certain names in the genre of “lordsirmasterking” or “iwant cunt todestroy” would get a roll of the eyes or laughter and first impression was these people are wankers or arrogant asses and while I was very open to change my mind, the fact was an impression on some level was in my head and it would have to have some impact.

To me it was almost like the difference I found when reading and writing messages in different moods and energy levels. I may have been open minded but factors might not cause me to treat all messages truly equal on a sub conscious level. Not right but life.

I resent your views regarding nicnames. To prejudge someone simply because of his/her nic, is shallow and speaks to a self-serving mentality. A bit of history regarding my nic. I first began training as a submissive some 30 years ago. I chose the nic mikey which is a childhood nicname. When I and others in the community realized I was really a dominant, we added a capital M to that nic. (Mmikey). A pro-Domme friend suggested I change it to MasterMike. I didn't like the sound of that nic so went with William, my given name. Thus MasterWilliam. In those days it was not uncommon for the local community to help you chose a name. It was not uncommon to choose Master/Sir/Mistress/Ma'am as a prefex. I still on occasion use Mmikey (Mmikey49) in my local communty, simply because many folks know me as that. I use MasterWilliam to reflect my High Protocol interests. There is more to this story, but that's the gist of it.

The cyber world has confused and complicated the use of nicnames to the point where they are misleading. This I will agree with. I agree in the cyber world some nics are over-the-top. But to assign character simply on the use of a nic is very tacky to me. It's a generalization that is unbecomming to an experienced lifestyler.

SimplyMicheal, I have read and often agree with some  things you have to say.  My slave does as well.  But in your quest to be the Alpha Dom of Collarme's little world, you are sometimes a little over-the-top yourself.

I am Mmikey to my friends in the local community. I am also MasterWilliam which reflects my history and honours those who helped me grow over the past 30 years, and most importantly, honours my slave. I am Not a cyber Dom. I live in the real world.

Hello. =)

Neither usernames nor profiles hold that much weight to me at all. As enjoyable as CM is, it's still an artificial environment so I tend to take a lot of how folks choose to describe themselves in those ways with a grain of salt.

I guess I just don't them too seriously because it's highly unlikely I'll ever meet these people in real life, so there's no way of knowing what their deal is.

Judging a submissive/ slave by how they capitalize their user name? Are you kidding?

Cheers,
Stella

AKA "It's not cool to judge, except when it is."

You chose your name for a reason, and many of those reasons are specifically based on SOCIAL concepts and recognitions.  So you're upset when someone recognizes those social concepts and applies them to you?  That's what names are FOR, that's the entire purpose of language to begin with.

That's like saying no one should care about first impressions.  First impressions are first impressions and there are very good reasons to judge them for what they are.

I find I look at more profiles of different or cool names, instead of the generic LAMistress kinda thing.
It is just a curiousity thing for me to see who the person is that would come up with such a name.
And yes, I know my nic is PortHuronSub.  I am just here for communication anyway as I met my Mistress through ALT.

Screen names don't effect me unless they are unusually clever. I love when people can incorporate a great play on words into their nick.
RL though yup, names do effect me! I just talked with my ex about this yesterday, he is dating a woman named Jennifer lol. I asked him if he had dated anyone with a name he truly hated & realised that I would not be happy dating certain names.
Some names I just cannot envision crying out in a moment of orgasmic passion...not many but there are a few names that actually do turn me off.

Sumpin new to work on   overcoming.

I have to agree with you on this one.  I can't see myself being with someone with an old-fashioned name that makes you think of your great-grandma or great aunt.

Well... I don't believe SimplyMichael said nics hold all the weight in a decision about someone, and I honestly don't know if his answer was serious or not, but I do think they are something that holds quite a bit of weight for me.

The exterior and visible choices that I make... be it the clothes I wear, the car I drive, how I wear my hair, and the name I choose to be identified by in a forum... all are a reflection of me.  They let people know a little bit about me.  They aren't the be all and end all of measuring sticks, but they do serve a purpose.  To a certain extent and within reason, I expect them to be used by others to judge me.

And the choices that others make certainly tell me a lot about them.

So I guess that means I have a self-serving mentality... but that wasn't really news to me anyway.  I've never considered it a cardinal sin to make decisions or take actions that benefit and take care of me.

I ~adore~ clever nicknames but otherwise don't pay much attention to them.

It can be tough to come up with an online name if you haven't been a professional online chatter for the bulk of your adult life, so I think people who add titles to their name should be given a break.  Also, if my name is bad, people with names like mine should be given a break : )

The only reason I have this screen name is because I really hadn't meant to stay! I really intended just to join & look around for an hour or so then go poof. Heh.
The vortex that is CM caught me  .
