Pardon the psudoflame. ORIGINAL: michaelOfGeorgia should it be a requirement for citizenship in America to be able to speak, read, write and understand English? Should the ability to speak, read, write, and understand English be a requirement for citizenship? i had thought that this was already a requirement, but cannot find a reference to it. I had thought it was already a requirement, but I cannot find any references to that effect. this is not to say that people who speak other languages have to give up those languages, but i think that we should all be able to understand each other more than we currently do. This is not to say that people who speak other languages have to give up those languages; but I think that we should all be able to understand each other more than we do, currently. I agree, lingual ability should be a requirement as part of the citizenship process, as well as history and civics. I find it ironic that many of our first and second generation immigrants seem to make far better citizens than those who can trace their history back many generations. We tend to grow, in the face of adversity. Stephan
