I do what I have always done when my owner gets in a bad mood- I go in for the 'massage' technique! First I'd help him take off any excess clothing, and I'd remain quiet, only sending him soft smiles to let him know I'm there for him. After that, I know he'll probably hit the bed face first as he always does when he's cranky/exaughsted, and I'd crawl up beside him and kneed into his back and rub over it with my palms while he lays there. I was at the bank with him once and we were waiting for a while in the lobby and he was getting cranky. So right there I began to massage him. After a few minutes he looked at me and chuckled, "Are you trying to keep me from being in a bad mood?" I replied yes, and the people behind us started saying, "My turn!" "I'm going to fall asleep if I keep watching her do that" etc. We both thought it was funny and I felt rather proud. He seemed in a better mood after that! Of course, I'd also ask if there was anything else I could do, like bring him a glass brimming with applejuice *snickers* or fix an early dinner if it's 4:00 p.m. I just love it when he gets to the point where he feels relaxed and lets out a deep, long sigh and looks at me like I'm the best thing that's ever happened. It makes me feel really good!
