Stupid is one that really hurts me. I can take slut, whore, cunt (not my favorite but it doesn't hurt) fat, ugly, stuck up etc etc..........but stupid breaks me everytime.

Ditto that.  Anything else doesn't really phase me, but 'stupid' is a sticking point.  Probably because my education came at a very high price for me, and I take pride in on what I accomplished.  I also agree with RealOne that it's my choice to wear it (or not), but if I hear it, it definitely hits harder than any other.

I'll admit, the only people who call me niggerlover are blacks...and coming from them, it's not degrading or insulting. However, if a white person was to say the same thing to me, even trying to be humorous, I would probably take offense . Quite a contradiction there

veleca, I think your very countenance devalues such a term when used against you. My own inequities long gave that word much power over me, however through diligent pursuit of education and the struggles that entailed it finally occurred to me that such a term is the tool of the weak minded. The uneducated and dimwitted resort to belittling to feel superior and victorious over you. Often people, when confronted with someone of merit, feel they have to tear others down so that their own weak ego can build its delusional walls sheltering it from the truth. I know many such people, sadly they are mostly relatives, that employ these tactics. I understand that they have fell into the trap of human failing and ceased to grow beyond the perceived norm and as I continued and continue to learn, evolve and grow beyond what they, and most of society, believes possible they can only find solace in diminishing my accomplishments. They long ago antiquated stupid and freak or freakish is the only derogatory nomenclature that they feel has any power now.

i am wondering what all of you think is the most degrading word that has ever come out of someones mouth? what is your reaction to that word?

The word i think is the most degrading is Cunt..everytime someone has called me that or even said it I wanted to put them through the wall...

its your choice to wear it.  (or not)

sticks n stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me!  said it as kids.

Alas this is a common misconception.  Words are powerful.  They can inspire people to beauty or triumph.  And they can crush the soul unlike a punch ever could.

It's great to have all of you whores, sluts, cunts, bitches and stupid people chime in....Isn't it amazing the power of words...However, I have found if the person who is spouting these words is not in a position of power the best approach is to ignore or point and laugh...If you choose the latter option just hope they don't have a gun, and even if they don't you might have to prepare to defend yourself...Your choice.

George Carlin's Seven Dirty Words

The big seven words you weren't allowed to broadcast were: Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker and Tits.

Here is the original Carlin comedy routine that caused the Fracas.

"I love words. I thank you for hearing my words. I want to tell you something about words that I uh, I think is important. I love..as I say, they're my work, they're my play, they're my passion. Words are all we have really.

We have thoughts, but thoughts are fluid. You know, [humming]. And, then we assign a word to a thought, [clicks tongue]. And we're stuck with that word for that thought. So be careful with words. I like to think, yeah, the same words that hurt can heal. It's a matter of how you pick them.

There are some people that aren't into all the words. There are some people who would have you not use certain words. Yeah, there are 400,000 words in the English language, and there are seven of them that you can't say on television. What a ratio that is. 399,993 to seven. They must really be bad. They'd have to be outrageous, to be separated from a group that large. All of you over here, you seven. Bad words. That's what they told us they were, remember? 'That's a bad word.' 'Awwww.' There are no bad words. Bad thoughts. Bad Intentions.

And words, you know the seven don't you? Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker, and Tits, huh? Those are the heavy seven. Those are the ones that will infect your soul, curve your spine and keep the country from winning the war.

Shit, Piss, Fuck, Cunt, Cocksucker, Motherfucker, and Tits, wow. Tits doesn't even belong on the list, you know. It's such a friendly sounding word. It sounds like a nickname. 'Hey, Tits, come here. Tits, meet Toots, Toots, Tits, Tits, Toots.' It sounds like a snack doesn't it? Yes, I know, it is, right. But I don't mean the sexist snack, I mean, New Nabisco Tits. The new Cheese Tits, and Corn Tits and Pizza Tits, Sesame Tits Onion Tits, Tater Tits, Yeah. Betcha can't eat just one. That's true I usually switch off . But I mean that word does not belong on the list.

Actually, none of the words belong on the list, but you can understand why some of them are there. I am not completely insensitive to people's feelings. You know, I can dig why some of those words got on the list...like cocksucker and motherfucker. Those are...those are heavy-weight words. There's a lot going on there, man. Besides the literal translation and the emotional feeling. They're just busy words. There's a lot of syllables to contend with. And those K's. Those are aggressive sounds, they jump out at you. CocksuckerMotherfuckerCocksucker. It's like an assault, on you. So I can dig that.

And we mentioned shit earlier, of course. Two of the other 4-letter Anglo-Saxon words are Piss and Cunt, which go together of course. But forget about that. A little accidental humor there. Piss and Cunt. The reason Piss and Cunt are on the list is that a long time ago certain ladies said 'Those are the two I am not going to say. I don't mind Fuck and Shit, but P and C are out. P and C are out.' Which led to such stupid sentences as 'OK, you fuckers, I am going to tinkle now.'

And of course the word Fuck. The word Fuck, I don't really...well, this is some more accidental humor, but I don't really want to get into that now. Because I think it takes too long. But I do mean that. I mean, I think the word fuck is an important word. It's the beginning of life, and, yet it's a word we use to hurt one other, quite often. And uh, people much wiser than I have said, I'd rather have my son watch a film with two people making love than two people trying to kill one other. And I of course agree. I wish I know who said it first, and I agree with that. But I would like to take it a step further. I would like to substitute the word fuck, for the word kill in all those movie cliches we grew up with. 'Okay Sheriff, we're gonna fuck ya now. But we're gonna fuck ya slow.' So maybe next year I'll have a whole fuckin' rap on that word. I hope so.

Uh, there are two-way words, but those are the seven you can never say on television. Under any circumstances you just can not say them ever, ever ever, not even clinically. You can not weave them in the panel with Doc and Ed and Johnny, I mean it's just impossible, forget those seven, they're out.

But, there are some two-way words. There are double-meaning words. Remember the ones your giggled at in sixth grade? 'And the cock crowed three times.''Hey, the cock the cock crowed three times. It's in the bible.' There are some Two-way words, like it's okay for Curt Gowdy [mis-spelled in original transcription. -ed.] to say 'Roberto Clemente has two balls on him.' But he can't say, 'I think he hurt his balls on that play Tony, don't you? He's holding them. He must have hurt them by God.' And the other two-way word that goes with that one is prick. It's okay if it happens to your finger. Yes, you can prick your finger, but don't finger your prick. No, no."

100 percent agree!

My ex husband called me every dirty name in the book to make me hot. He never called me a name outside of the bedroom but his actions denigrated me more than any name he  could have thought up.

In the right context no word can offend me. My sister calls me a slut and a bitch and a cunt all the time, and she loves me dearly. It is said in a joking way.

words are only degrading to me when a person uses them sincerely...that is what really stings. from my Master, the most degrading thing to hear would probably be "stupid"...when he's upset and yelling at me, and says "you stupid bitch!" or something to that effect, it makes me feel about 1 inch tall, and i just want to die. from anyone else, "nigger" or any variation of the same. several white Dominants have used that word with me for the sole purpose of degrading me, and it certainly served its purpose.

i can understand how upset i would be if someone i didn't know called me a bitch, cunt, whore, etc. yet when Daddy calls me His black whore i don't feel degraded instead i feel loved. however my extreme hard limit is anyone referring me as a nigger or nigga - that's not how i wish to be addressed from any male or female. it makes my cringe when i hear from young adults including those my youngest UM's age.

Cunt did it for me when my ex used it with cruel intentions. That word burnt like a hot knife. Not the same effect on me in my D's relationship. So, i agree it is how the word is used.

Profanity doesn't bother me, but I think that has to do with being raised by cops and working in the jail. Though I'm quite capable of speaking without profanity, I tend to use it quite a bit when I'm around my friends.

Words like bitch, slut, whore, cunt, etc don't bother me (and sometimes excite me.)

"Stupid" doesn't bother me because I'm secure in my intelligence. I know that I did extremely well in school and have a high IQ..

The only one that bothers me is "fat". Chubby, plump, fluffy and overweight are fine..."fat" isn't.

I also really dislike hearing the N word. I have several african american friends and hearing this word is just offensive to me, especially when coming from young african american males (I hear it ALL the time at the jail.) I usually tell them, "Don't you realize that previous generations worked hard and even died so that you could have a right to respect and equal treatment and to not have to be called by that name? You're disrespecting the work and lives of the people who came before you and I'm sure they would be ashamed."

The N word doesn't even faze me anymore.
I live in the South now and it's very common to hear it if you're around black people everyday. They use that term a lot in everyday conversation.
Some of the worst in my opinion, "Liar", "Theif" with no proof.
Oh, and "stupid" is not a very nice thing to call someone either.
You don't need a high i.q. to be a valuable person.
I try to be nice to everyone I meet.

words have no ability to degrade. If you find a word degrading it is yourself that is doing it, not the word. No one word has any effect on me, it is the intent of the speaker that matters, not the words spoken.

Exactly.
When a word hurts me it isnt the word but the voice which the word is carried on that hurts. So for me there is not a most degrading word.

Well, words do hurt, and this is recognized in the law: fighting words doctrine

Regulation of Fighting Words and Hate Speech

In 1942, the Supreme Court sustained the conviction of a Jehovah's witness who addressed a police officer as a "God dammed racketeer" and "a damned facist" (Chaplinksy v. New Hampshire).  The Court's opinion in the case stated that there was a category of face-to-face epithets, or "fighting words," that was wholly outside of the protection of the First Amendment: those words "which by their very utterance inflict injury" and which "are no essential part of any exposition of ideas."

EFF legal history of "fighting words"

In Cohen v. California, 1971 the Supreme Court restated the description of fighting words as "those personally abusive epithets which, when addressed to the ordinary citizen, are, as a matter of  common knowledge, inherently likely to provoke violent action.
