Sanity -> Ironic - Global Warming Expedition Called Off (3/12/2007 7:23:56 PM)

Due To Extreme Cold.

They were also in an extremely cold environment to start with though.

Sanity -> RE: Ironic - Global Warming Expedition Called Off (3/12/2007 7:29:14 PM)

They had planned on an exhibition detailing all the global warming they found on their trip. They had even planned on going swimming.

WyrdRich -> RE: Ironic - Global Warming Expedition Called Off (3/12/2007 7:33:42 PM)

It's funny, we had some severe cold in SoCal this winter, bad enough to destroy 70% of the orange crop.  I never heard a word about the 'greater significance' and what it meant.  Now we are having a hot spell and every morning show sidekick squeals "global warming."

WyrdRich:
How many days of below freezing weather did we have here in southern California that destroyed the orange crop.  If you don't know what you are talking about why do you post?

Ever stop to think that the problem may not be a warming of a particular time increment from 60 to 67 degrees, and the problem with global warming may be that the average temperature over the year may go from 60 to 67 degrees?  What this would mean is that the average cold temperature may go from 30 degrees to 37 degrees, and the average hot temperature may go from 80 to 87 degrees?

This would mean that our glaciers and ice flows would melt and not be replenished.  Summers would be unbearably hot.

Just me, etc.

Sinergy

Glaciers form and melt and have been doing it long before humans ever showed up.  And if you are truly so concerned about the alleged implications of man-made global warming, Sinergy, why on earth would you be waiting for a good price on a home by the ocean?  Won't the coming Antarctic melt put your house under water at the same time the unuseable port will put you out of work?

Thought you were a bit more far-sighted than that... Oh wait, Liberal... never mind.

as you should know in California, ocean view does not equate sea level.

Good call.

Turn the general discussion about society into a personal attack.

Look me up when you want to discuss the societal implications of global warming from a reasoned and educated perspective.

p.s. I am actually looking for a place up in the mountains.  Thank you for asking.

FangsNfeet -> RE: Ironic - Global Warming Expedition Called Off (3/12/2007 9:34:37 PM)

This reminds me when Al Gore gave a speech about Global Warming in New York during record breaking cold temperatures for the state.

Perhaps scientist had it right the first time when Global Freezing was the hot topic back in the seventies.

popeye1250 -> RE: Ironic - Global Warming Expedition Called Off (3/12/2007 9:43:13 PM)

I wouldn't want to join Jerry Falwell's "church" much less "The Church of Global Warming."
Now those people are MEAN!
They can't deal with anyone who disagrees with them and they'll burn your house down!
Crazy fuckers!
Don't those Global Warming morons ever SHUT THE FUCK UP?

subfever -> RE: Ironic - Global Warming Expedition Called Off (3/12/2007 10:54:42 PM)

Oops... there were a few cold spells around the globe this year. I guess that makes the Global Warming Theory nothing but a big liberal hoax.

All you status-quo defenders can relax now.

magicmember7 -> RE: Ironic - Global Warming Expedition Called Off (3/12/2007 11:34:17 PM)

Actually the theory for global warming says there will be extremes of temperature (both hot and cold) and more violent weather due to increased energy in the atmosphere.  So dont get your hopes up just yet...

"2006 Was Earth's Fifth Warmest Year"
Feb. 8, 2007

"Climatologists at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York City have found that 2006 was the fifth warmest year in the past century.

Image right: The five warmest years since the late 1880s, according to NASA scientists, are in descending order 2005, 1998, 2002, 2003 and 2006. Credit: NASA

Other groups that study climate change also rank these years as among the warmest, though the exact rankings vary depending upon details of the analyses. Results differ especially in regions of sparse measurements, where scientists use alternative methods of estimating temperature change."

You know, people, we really are making progress.  At least we're no longer arguing over whether Saddam Hussein was involved in 9/11.

From Wood's Hole Research Center

http://www.whrc.org/resources/online_publications/warming_earth/scientific_evidence.htm

"After years of investigation and in consultation with thousands of scientists, the IPCC was able to write, in its Second Assessment Report in 1995, that climate has changed over the past century and that the twentieth century had a mean temperature “at least as warm as any other century since 1400 A.D.” Their report noted that the dramatic increase in carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere over the past 150 years (from about 280 parts per million to about 376 parts per million) is largely due to anthropogenic (human-caused) effects and concluded that “the balance of evidence suggests a discernible human influence on global climate.” Their models predicted a rise of 1.8 to 6.3 degrees Fahrenheit in the global mean surface temperature during the next century, with sea-levels expected to rise by 6 inches to 3 feet by 2100. (IPCC 1995). The conclusions of the IPCC gained broad support in the world scientific community and, in the summer of 1997, a letter signed by 2,600 scientists called for the United States to take a leadership role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions to diminish the likelihood of intense, continuous global warming."

CLIMATE is not WEATHER. We learned this in 7th Grade.

That aside, we don't know enough about what's happening OR NOT HAPPENING to make any intelligent decisions, so all discussion EXCEPT "What models are best, what do they tell us, do they tell us anything meaningful, and WHAT DATA do we need to support, change, or refine the models" is simply a waste of time, energy and resources.

L&M, "we" wearn't.
That was all the Moonbats who were trying to argue a non-point.
You know like; "There were very few tiger attacks in Cleveland in the 1990's." DUH!

My scientist buddy up at Tufts U. in Boston told me two weeks ago that, "it was so cold here today I saw a lawyer with his hands in his own pockets!"

seeksfemslave -> RE: Ironic - Global Warming Expedition Called Off (3/13/2007 1:13:45 AM)

farglebargle questions computor modelling, Quite right too.
A computor model produces results that are as accurate as the data entered backed up by the assumptions of the modeller. With contentious issues, where the modeller is "trying to make a point"  that often means the results are NOT accurate.

Get a meteorologist to predict next months weather or an economist to predict the long term effects of say tax changes and guess what....
The weather man will fail and the results of the economist will be no better than chance.

The original post is a gem. lol

I question ALL models, not just the computer sims.

Models are crucial to science. But some models say more than others. Some models are modeling the wrong thing. Some models say totally correct things about totally trivial factors.

I don't say that climate change isn't happening. It very well may be happening.

I don't say that climate change is happening. It very well might not be happening.

We just don't really have a fucking clue.
