lilsubl -> RE: Diets, the Gym, tips, thoughts, goals? (3/18/2007 10:27:47 AM)

a number of years ago, i was given a medication that the dr said "might cause a little weight gain"...10 weeks & 100 extra lbs later, i refused to take the med anymore...i have been at least 100 lbs heavier than i would like to be ever since...i have tried every diet on the planet, i think...last September, i went back on the Jenny Craig plan & have since lost nearly 30 lbs...i lost 10 lbs in the first month so am not all that happy with the loss since then...but i do continue to lose, so that's what's really important...

when i broke my foot, all possibility of exercise went right out the window...i have been given permission to walk on it now, so i will do that...for me the key is eating all the foods every day, at about a 2-3-hour interval...i try to only eat fresh vegetables & fruits, because they have so much more nutrition in them...i also try to drink a glass of water each time i eat & sometimes in between...my goal is to average 2 lbs per week from here on out...

i would love to participate in a thread like this where we all check in & support each other...i've also gotten the "fat" emails & i tend to respond with, "thank you for your input...have a nice day" & i never hear from them again...also, i prefer the term fat to all the others:  BBW, Overweight, etc...but that's just for me...i think everybody has words that bother them & words that make them feel good.....

ps:  i like the idea of sitting on the flamers...hehehe

That happened to me as well.  Fortunately for me, when I went off the med, the first 40 lbs were easy to lose.  The rest has been a challenge.

I have started a spinning class at a local gym.  The main reason I am going is for the mental and emotional benefits.  I am on a high for a couple days after going and I love that feeling.

fergus -> RE: Diets, the Gym, tips, thoughts, goals? (3/18/2007 10:57:42 AM)

Eat less and be more active.  I know that is just too easy, so let me refine ;)

Cut out snacks, ESPECIALLY all soda.  Soda is one of the worst things, but if you replace it with sports drinks and/or juices you aren't doing much good.  Cut out all drinks except maybe a cup or two of coffee and a juice in the morning.  Water for the rest.  The weight will drop off.

Portions.  We are americans (most of us) so our food is already full of bad stuff, but the portions we eat is ridiculous!  Three squares a day, maybe a light snack.

Walking - best thing besides swimming.  Cardiovascualr, and works the muscles a bit,  You don't have to kill yourself in a gym, just walk an extra 1/2 mile a day.  If you want more muscle tone, then free weights are the best for that.

DO NOT eat fake food.  Diet soda is just as bad (maybe worse) than regular soda.  Less calories and less sugar  - yes - but still all the carbs and toxic substance.  Fake food is NEVER a replacement for real food.  If you can not eat a 'real' food for some reason, cut back or cut it out - do NOT replace it with 'diet' versions.

Most important:

Cheat.

Once a wekk, pick one day where you can have ONE or TWO sodas, maybe some other snacks.  Most people feel like they are punishing themselves by cutting out everything - but you don't have to.  Just be sensible.  Eat good all week, have some fun food (don't gorge) once a week.

DO NOT EVER GO ON A DIET.  If you go on a diet, you go OFF the diet.  Instead, make small life changes.  They will last longer and have more healthy benefits.  Change ONE thing that you can change - make it a new part of your life, and then add something else when you are ready.  it is not a race.

BE REALISTIC - we often have a false sense of self and beauty.  EVERYONE is beautiful.  And we all have different an unique shapes.  Don't try to lose weight because someone else wants you too - do it IF you want to.  Remember, a little extra meat on the bones can be sexy too.

you have hit on the very thing that changed my outlook on excercise and my physique. i found a passion (hiking) for me and it can be done so many ways! It always serves my mental and emotional needs as well and when i power hike - i do acheive that "high" you talk about. This year, i am taking up kayaking and although i have done it in the past, now it is becoming a passion. i hate gyms and regular workouts and only do them when i need extra training for a particular hike - other wise it is torture to me.
A couple other things i love are tai chi and yoga. Excellent for body, mind and spirit. Anytime i can do something that makes me feel beautiful in these three areas - it is time well spent...

It is because of this view i have that pulls me to like minded individuals, male or female for relationships...not because i have a problem with anyone of a particular size but because i look at total wellness, mind, body  and spirit and its physical manifestation. If i am considered beautiful to anyone, i would want it to be because what is inside is reflected on the outside~

Hello.  I have read every post in this thread so far and I think it's great that everybody is here to support each other.  I used to work for 24 Hour Fitness, and am a little bit knowledgeable in fitness and health.

Puella, I believe it was, offered some good advice on dieting.  Fergus' idea of rewarding yourself one day of the week is also some great words of wisdom.  I have to disagree with the no dieting bit of advice, however.  We are all on some sort of diet, usually a diet of personal preference.  At 24 Hour, I was taught that proper eating habits are about 70% of most people's fitness goals.

What I have not seen mentioned that I think is very valuable advice is the amount of meals to eat per day.  It is suggested to eat 4-6 light meals a day.  "Light" as in you eat enough to not feel hungry.  Spacing these meals out evenly, and not eating heavily, helps to keep your metabolism active throughout the day,  burning more calories.  Whereas eating only a couple big meals with nothing inbetween will cause your metabolism to slow down inbetween meals, and thus you will burn less fat.

In terms of motivation for exercise, a workout buddy works great...or even a workout Dom or sub.

[quick reply]

kyra you are brave to be doing 'spinning' - I personally would fall off and die after 3 minutes lol what is that 1 minute at about 60 rpm, one at 100 rpm then down again and up again.  Yup you are brave

proudsub -> RE: Diets, the Gym, tips, thoughts, goals? (3/18/2007 12:39:36 PM)

Here is a summary of tips to boost fat burning metabolism that i put together after reading "Flip the Switch" (no it's not about a BDSM switch).  The author does go into a lot more detail and the scientific explanation behind each tip.

Never sit for more than 30 min. at a time--get up and move or do some quick resistance training. If you can't get up, then do some resistance work at your seat every 30 min.

Eat frequently and always include protein with your snack or meal.

Stay in bright lighting and spend some time outdoors daily.

Get plenty of sleep in a dark room.

Keep stress in check to prevent excess cortisol production.

Drink lots of water, especially ice water.

Start the day with ice water, protein, bright lights and some exercise.

Turn your thermostat down, try to stay cooler than you are used to, including when sleeping.

Use good posture.

Breath deeply frequently throughout the day.

Eat plenty of calcium, green tea and take selenium supplements.

Get some light exercise after meals.

Spread your exercise out throughtout the day rather than one intensive workout then sitting all day.

With all the Flaming Fat Threads and talk of Diets in the negitive sense I hope to start something on a Positive note.  So many of us, Male and Female fight gravity, inactivity, and extra pounds I thought possibly a thread to encourage, share tips and general better health, and or work out ideas.

I'll start with my own journey.
I have a few extra pounds I am trying to shed.  I've never been skinny.  I've totally wrecked my metoblism by not eating, I'm trying to eat right.  I'm working at targeting my weak areas in the gym but progress is slow.  Somedays life gets in the way and that brownie looks too good to ignore.  My curent goal is to loose 20 pounds and tone up.
I'm looking for encouragment, how about you?

Q....

For the record....last time I saw one of your pics you looked good as hell. And I would further tell you that you look good with a lil' ''meat on the bone'' versus being skinny - I think.

I also want to add that Puella's post is both great advice and on the money. I know many folks who've lost weight with thirty minutes of cardio a day.....but personally, I'd do no less 50 minutes a day if you really wanna bump up the shrinkage. And don't forget the stretching exercises and 500 crunches after/before the cardio so you don't get shin splints and loose skin from weight loss /cardio  ; }

Best at ya.....

If you can, work out in the water, lilsubl.  I spend an hour or two several times a week doing deep water running, which will put no pressure at all on your foot.  It's great for my poor abused knees.  (Let's put it this way, the one I broke is the "good" one, as opposed to the other)  I also lift weights at home two or three times weekly.

A few general notes.  White flour and corn syrup are two of the worst substances to eat.  Corn syrup is so processed your body doesn't even recognize it as food, and it often will convert it straight to fat.  White flour is almost as bad, as is white sugar.  Try to eat low on the food chain.  The less processed something is, the better it is for you.  Drink at least 2 liters of water daily.  These things apply to almost everyone.  Beyond that it's a matter of finding what works best for your body.    For me pasta is a disaster.  My blood sugar goes kerflooie and stays there.  Yet ice cream isn't a problem at all.  Try to eat enough that your body doesn't go into starvation mode and clings to every possible calorie.   I'm not giving myself a number goal.  My goal is to go roller blading.  I'm also trying to reward myself with little treats like facials as I improve.  The point isn't to be 'thin', or to meet some arbitrary number on a scale.  It certainly isn't to please anyone but myself.  I'm not trying to get healthy to attract a Dom, a HNG, or to gain the approval of those who equate fat with bad.  I AM fat, I will always BE fat, and if me as I am isn't sufficient, oh well.   If you need some links for large swimming suits, let me know.

Beyond that you need to drink water, and lots of it. Water boosts your metabolism (or rather, how well it works), and hydration is essential in both breaking up and flushing out the fat in your body, as well as distributing the nutrition from your food to your body.  The minute your body thinks it is not getting enough nutrition, you go into 'starvation' mode and your body actually works double time to store fat.

It is also important (for me at least) to have 'free weekend'.  I do not eat my way through the weekend on dorritos and nutella (though I would love to) but I relax the regulations somewhat, allowing for some goodies.

Sigh, water was quite an issue.  I had no idea how dehydrated I was!  Now that I'm pushing water I see a huge difference not only in my work outs but in my skin itself.

I do tend to do the ~free~ weekend thing myself.  If I continually say NO NO NO,
I will cheat and go through that entire process and defeat any motivation I've built up.
Saying it's ok, keeps binging away and I've found I'm able to enjoy something small.
I'm glad to hear I'm not alone in this one either!

I found the best way to do long cardio routines was to have a favorite, upbeat playlist on my MP3 player.  When I would start getting tired, I would look at the next song and think to myself, I can keep going for another 3 1/2 minutes, just to get through this song.  Then the next song and the next.  I had worked myself up to 45-60 minutes on the elliptical.

Music is something I've been searching to use this way too.  Do you have any favorites that keep your concentration up and attentive?

I'm still working on the small more frequent meals thing.  I will say that eating early in the morning has helped produce an appitite that I have never had.  Now what to call a meal mid day is the issue when most days I'm at work.... sigh, hence the foil pack of tuna!

I couldnt agree more with you Llyren, lilsubl has issues that are unique and water would really be her friend.  Do you have a pool near by lilsubl?  Maybe a YMCA?

As for the Roller Blades I picked up a pair myself.  Now that my work is almost at a stand still and I have 40 acres of black top to play on I intend to see if I can get from point A to point B without landing on my head.  It has to be great for the inner thighs!

i tried spinning but didn't care for it all that much...i can do the elliptical for 60 minutes or more at a time, but 30 minutes of spinning and i'm mush, hehehe. it's one of those things that i'll have to build up to...a long tim efrom now.

i know this is a stupid question, but what exactly is "deep water running"? i do a lot of swimming, and more water workouts would be awesome for my joints, but i don't know that much about water running. thanks!

Llyren -> RE: Diets, the Gym, tips, thoughts, goals? (3/18/2007 3:20:04 PM)

Deep water running is great!  I bought myself a waterproof mp3 player from Freestyle Audio so I can listen to music while I'm doing it.  Now I personally am naturally bouyant because of the.. um... breasteses, but a lot of people need flotation belts.  Basically you get in till you can't touch bottom, then act as though you're cross-country skiiing.  You won't move as fast as those swimming, but you're getting a full-body workout.  The water provides plenty of resistance, and it also supports you.  I keep my knees slightly bent and focus on moving from the hips and shoulders.  It's easy to move from knees and elbows, and only realize what you're doing when it starts to hurt.  I also do deep water crunches.   Another thing I do is remain completely upright and still in the water, using my core muscles to keep me in that position.  It isn't as easy as it sounds.  When it gets too easy, I adjust to a kneeling position with my hands behind my back, still forcing my abdominal muscles to keep me steady.  That also leads to some very intriguing and naughty thoughts.  *grins*

NakedOnMyChain -> RE: Diets, the Gym, tips, thoughts, goals? (3/18/2007 4:43:52 PM)

I had my first UM in August and I weighed 198 pounds immediately afterwards.  It was the most I've ever weighed in my life.  I'm 5' 9" tall, and it still wasn't healthy.  So I busted my butt and now I weigh 158 pounds, seven months later.  My only secret was beginning to count calories and instead of sitting while watching TV, I walk in place.  It shed the weight very quickly.  My advice would be to write down when you're most inactive (besides sleep obviously) and find something to do to pick up your metabolism during that time.  Say it's when you're on the computer.  You can get up every ten minutes and do a few jumping jacks or go pick things up around the house for ten minutes.  Balance you're exercise with "rewards" like being able to watch TV for a while.

puella -> RE: Diets, the Gym, tips, thoughts, goals? (3/18/2007 5:10:01 PM)

Speaking of days off...

I am currently having a favorite indulgence.. mushroom pizza.

I make a whole wheat crust.. very thin and crispy and pile on the shrooms

let me give ya the recipe

(makes two pizzas)

1 cup white flour
1 cup 50/50 flour (half whole wheat half white)
1tsp salt
2tsp sugar
3/4 cup warm water
1 package quick acting yeast
2 tbsp olive oil

in a food processor mix up the flour, salt and sugar while you disovle the yeast in the water

add the yeast water to the flour and add 1 tbsp olive oil
mix until a ball forms (depending on the flour, you may need to add a smidge more water)

knead for one minute, and let rise for 2 hours in a bowl oiled with the remaining oil and covered with saran wrap (in a warm place)

punch the dough down and let rise for another two hours

divide the dough in two and wrap one half up (it will store in the fridge for a week or so.. just take it out and let it rise again before using)

roll out and put on your toppings

I like home made sauce as i can control the fat and sodium  (and taste!!) and use a mixture of fat free mozzarella , parmigino reggiano, peccorino romano and asiago cheese, thinly sliced fresh mushrooms and salt and pepper

line a baking sheet with wax or parchment paper, spray with cooking spray and toss a bit of cornmeal down on it.  bake at 425 for  20 minutes..

immediately slide a spatula under the pizza when you get it out (so it doesnt stick to the paper). slap it on a cooling wrack for a couple of minutes and cut into slices

it is a wonderful indulgence with not nearly as many bad spots as normal pizza..
