Here are two places that are free where you can keep track of your calories, fitness and enter custom foods to keep track of. I'm quite partial to the first one. Has recipes and meal planning. It only has one section for snacks, but I just put both my morning and mid afternood snack in the same place. I also think 6 small meals is the ideal for fat burning and agree that diet pills should be avoided.

Fitday.com

thank you very much for these 2 websites...i have now started on Fitday...i like that i can input my foods & my activites & it actually shows that i'm burning more calories than i'm taking in which, as near as i can figure, is the only way to actually lose weight...

i don't weigh myself except once a week when i meet with my counselor...if i have a scale at home, i tend to get obsessive about weighing & sometimes will weigh myself several times a day...the weight goal i have set for myself should be easily achieved by Thanksgiving...if i decide to stop losing before i get to that weight, due to my feeling good enough & looking the way i want to, that'll be just fine with me...my real goal is to get fit, have energy & stamina...and, oh yeah....be able to wear cool clothes   [:)]

A scale can make or break a person's new eating plan I'd use a measuring tape to gage progress the scale is unpredictable and can knock you off your path (example - i've lost 4 pounds I deserve a few cookies or damn I gained 3lbs I might as well just eat the box of cookies )also the scale can't measure body mass index or your body type all are factor's with your progress .One good hint is if your jeans that were tight get loose your losing inches and body comp is changing and a scale won't pick that up.
Also body comp plays a role in your rate of progress - there are 3 body types
Ectomorph is a very lean person takes alot of work to gain muscle mass a few famous examples are -Lisa Kudrow ,Kate Moss and Brad Pitt .
Mesomorph-very athletic build responds to weights faster but can gain weight easy famous examples are -Bruce Willis ,sly stallone and most Mr universe winners
endomorphs -they are soft bodied cuvy then tend to hold on to extra weight more but they do respond to weights like a meso famous examples are John goodman ,Roseanne and Jack Black  . If you'd rather use the fruits of fitness it's apple (being large midline greater waist circumferences than 35 inches )or a pear being heavier in the lower body area hips thighs and buttocks .
Also there can be combo's of the body types but this is a good definer how to exercise cardio vrs weights or combining the 2 for a good overall circuit workout .
The only time I use a scale is when I do an intake with a new client and when the date of the short term date arrives and it's progress time.
It's a great idea to get a physical from your doctor and ask about a bmi weigh in it's being submerged in water and will determine your body mass index % of fat vrs muscle mass . I hope I helped a little

Good luck!   A few friends of mine swear that doing cardio first thing in the morning is a good way to loose weight fast because you're working off stored reserves rather than what you ate during the day.

Actually I just read something about that early morning work out.
It said NOT to eat first, where of course the ~trainer~ at Golds said to eat first.
The way the article explained it working out prior to eating (yes you can have
coffee but no cream or sugar) makes the body pull the reserves from fat
storage rather then what it's processing.  Course it also says to eat shortly
after.  Now if I could only get the heart rate thing right!  Grr

edited to add, gimme 6 more months and i'll have as nice a rear as you!!!

yes, Doll, you've helped quite a bit...i think i'm probably the mesomorph as i have a lot of muscle even now under this fat layer...when i work out, i tend to build muscle & lose inches rather rapidly...i love working out with wieghts & i also really enjoy the stationary bike...my all-time favorite cardio has got to be walking...i have been known to walk up to 9 miles a day for several months...once the foot feels well enough, i will start walking again...

i drove a semi longhaul for the last 5 years, but i'm considering coming in off the road now & getting some sort of office job...i hope that it will also entail walking around as i don't do too well sitting in one place for long periods of time....when that happens, i will join a gym & begin working out on a regular basis...i'm not a morning person, so i don't think i will be that good at going to the gym before work...but if the job is close enough, i will walk there...& remember that everything is within walking distance if you have enough time...[:)]

I agree about the scales. Those things are just awful. The fit of your clothes and a good tape measure are the best.

Here is another free website I just found:
www.3fatchicks.com

I don't know much about this site, but I did see where had recipes and they provided shoes for wide feet and that was enough for me to make it worth mentioning, in spite of their diet pill ads on there.

I find that certain client's respond to an early morning workout with no food (maybe a small protein shake before) or nothing at all it depends on the person some get sick feeling with no food some feel sick with food .As for tapping into the reserves when you stop eating at 7 pm or 2hrs before bed it's a mini fast for your body and if you workout during this phase first thing in the morning it's been rumored to help with weight loss plateaus.
The body has no concept of time so it doesn't matter when you workout unless your strength training and then you need recovery time of 24 to 48 hrs between body parts worked .The heartrate question many professional's can't say if the target heart rate works or not. We do use heartrate monitors but mainly for motivation the precieved exertion scale is you should be able to conduct a conversation during your workout not gasping for air or puking in a bucket it varies it's based on your age weight and level of activity .No target heartrates are the same heartrate monitors can give you an idea of your rate along with how long in the target rate and how many kilocalories burned (units of energy) they are a great motivating tool .
After a workout it's essential to refuel your body with a good meal you burned the tank of gas down now it's time to replenish, some load up on protein and a complex carb it balances the blood sugar and helps with recovery ,less Doms mean you'll be able to workout the next day and continue your path to fitness .

I'm not trying to lose weight, but I watch my diet carefully. I try to avoid all processed food, and eat mostly just fresh meat, fruit and vegetables.  I avoid breads.   If it's not organic then you really don't know what it is!
