*Candles dripping on my body, you in your killer heeled boots....nice! I'd rather get lost in the darkness of something more warm and moist sweetpea x

Personally, I'm quite fond of old Lilibet, and to this Yank's eye she's a far more impressive national visage than Tony Bush.

But I can't resist sharing a favorite bit from Eddie Izzard's Dress to Kill show:

But in Britain we don't win many gold medals at the Olympics… because we've chosen not to! It's a political statement! Because we hate our national anthem. Because it's “God Save the Queen,” you see? “God Save the Queen.” Now the Queen lives in a very big house, she has barbed wire outside, and people with guns in front of that. That's one saved fucking queen, I'll tell you! That's the problem! She's overly saved! She has no idea of the struggle of human existence. We have to work for a living, raise a family… we don't have nannies all running around the place. It's what you've got to do in your life, you know? So it's "God Save the Queen." No! It's too saved. It's "God Attack the Queen," that's what it should be! ( singing ) "God attack the Queen, send big dogs after her that bite her bum. Let them chase after her and rip her knickers off..." That'd be fantastic! Then she'd have to fight the crazy dog with a handbag with a brick inside of it.

"Crazy dog! Crazy dog!"

"Arrgghh, kill the Queen!"

"No - crazy dog!"

And maybe she'd kill the crazy dog and everyone in Britain would go, "Hey, fair play to the Queen,- killed the crazy dog." And the Queen would have self-respect for the first time in her life! Yes. It would work. It'd be fantabulous.

Sounds reasonable enough...not sure about Portishead though.....Dogs - Selfish Ways would be perfect, but it's not on You Tube.....which is a shame because everyone would have gone for it, then we'd have turned our attention to revolution and ultimately ended up with the queen's head on a spike.....followed by parading it like door-to-door salesmen/women....never mind......

according to my big sis, who used to live up in Sheffield, that song is somewhat ironic, with Brightside being a really dodgy area of the writer's hometown..

lol NG - i was more giving context to the source of the actual post
eg
'why would we invoke a non-specific deity to bail out these unelected spongers' etcetc

if it was up to me i'm all for the Hokey Cokey as an anthem - that'd cheer up a few state occasions!

You're onto something......we do tend to look on the bright side, we're relentlessy upbeat, but we just like a good old fashioned moan from time to time.....

Ain't Sheffield in Yorkshire i.e the North....are you bailing out on us already? :-)

Hmmmm maybe You are right, but even tho i was born in Britain & live here now i was raised in the USA & my geography is crap!
sorry.

We have to be upbeat & adaptable, this country is changing way too fast but theres nothing anyone can do really except go with the flow!
i agree though, sometimes all anyone ever needs is a good old fashioned moan about it all!

No apologies necessary, redsky......it's only pedants and parochial types like me who worry about where Sheffield is in relation to the rest of the country :-)

You're quite unique then.... with a foot in both sides of the Atlantic...when you say the country is changing too fast can you be more specific? (it won't lead to pulling your post apart, I'm just curious).

my apology was leaning more to the 'geographical' side, not knowing more about where i come from as to exactly where Sheffield is.
i am not so unique, there are alot like me in the world today.... i get called 'britbilly' alot when im in the states which i find quite cute.

okay, enough rambling...
This country to me is changing in ways that i never thought in this day & age it would, for starters,
Racism, i thought that went out with the 80's! Dont we all bleed the same colour? seems to me since the government started letting other more immigrants & refugees into the country racism has risen seriously.
Murder, why is it a woman or even some men cant feel safe to walk down the street in the day anymore, never mind the night.
it seems that some people must have a sad life to want to destroy not only the life of the person they murder, but also the lives of the family & friends of that person.
Child abuse & dogs...now this really hit me the other day, i am a sucker for charities, a man stood in the middle of town asking for money, i stopped and asked what charities he was supporting.... there were 3, Cancer, RSPCA & NSPCC... he asked if i could spare £7 a month, £2 for Cancer, £2 for the children & £3 for dogs, now is it me or is this country losing sight of its priorities where charities are concerned? Dogs get more than abused suffering children? Hmmm odd!
Taxes, well im not even going to get started on *my* opinions on this one. but these are just a few things that i have seen a massive change in in the past 15 years which is how long i have been back here.
These are NOT opinions, they are just observations about what in *my* eyes has changed so much.
i appreciate Your curiosity but worry now ive made myself look a babbling fool, but its not so bad, i'll just blame that on being a typical blonde!

Don't we all babble at some point or another...and I ain't no blonde, I don't even have hair. They seemed fair enough opinions to me.

Some people appreciate division and destruction, suspicion and vested interest. Unfortunately, we're only so far down the civilisation path, so neanderthals remain at large.

I'm not so sure racism is on the increase - my perception. Could be wrong.

Agreed that destructon is a sad part of our society and the human race.

Having said this, I feel safe walking the streets. A matter for personal taste.

Agreed. I love dogs, but can see why they're not top of your priority list.

Fair enough. I think society is predisposed to change opinions based on what our establishment wants us to see i.e. they can lead us down a path of perception which doesn't necessarily match reality. As an example, the climate of fear is a distorted view of society and is leading people towards suspicion and division. Not that I'm saying your opinion isn't valid.

i love dogs... i just dont see how they can take prority over a child!

i disagree, i think there has been a sharp rise in the amount of racism, i cannot abide people who hold color, nationality, sex, mentality or handicap against someone, we are all here to live, so *live & let live*
i used to be a Development Worker, working with young adults who show challenging behavior, from Downs Syndrome to Autism even Prada Willi Syndrome,  i have seen first hand how society can show their distaste for 'diferent' people!

my opinion is valid, just as is anyone elses, i dont mind a lil heated debate about my opinions & values every now & then, it makes me look at myself to see if i need to rethink where i get my ideals.

You are probably safe to walk the streets, but what about if You were not You? smaller, gay, handicapped or old? or lived in a very bad community?

as for You not being blonde... count Yourself lucky!

One more thing... i like Your comment - "It's not a beard, it's an animal I've trained to sit very still"- i was wondering, if its bald does that make it one of those hairless cats?
