Right, listen, the national anthem?....it's wank. It's a big, fat funereal mess......why would we invoke a non-specific deity to bail out these unelected parasites? It ain't even English anyway.......it's as German as sauerkraut, just a few words/language changed.......these wankers aren't us, they don't represent us........when was the last time your granny got to wear the crown jewels down the bingo? never, cos they're not national treasures are they.......they're the treasures of privilege. Come on, let's get rid of this shite. We need a national anthem which reflects our idiosyncratic nature...........relentlessy upbeat whilst craving disappointment. That German song we have now ain't us....we don't believe in god, we don't believe in corgis, we don't believe in Teutonic military bollocks........we believe in a beer, in confusion, in disappointment, in disorder, in rebellion......we ain't German......so let's have a national anthem which reflects the English. Get your vision for the future of an English anthem, here. Has to be upbeat and melancholy to reflect the English style. I fuckin' love the place. I've been lucky enough to get about and visit all sorts of places/countries, but I wouldn't want to live anywhere other than Northern England.......just a shame some of our Midlands compatriots bow to authority...it could be so much better if we stood for the common man/woman....

We always get into this deadlock NG; I'm no fan of the monarchy and the C of E and all the stuff that goes with it, but until and unless you can propose something that will be an improvement, there's not much point in talking really. The standard alternative being a presidency, and that institution being at least as corrupted by the politics of it all as monarchy is corrupted by the supposed birthright of the monarch, I dont see any advantage in swapping hangers on for greasepole climbers to be honest. Anyway, this thread was turning out to be fun, so lets get back to that! E

Very true - you know i remember i think it was early 80's when maggie thatcher was in power? Anyway up here we were having a really bitter winter, snow etc. Then London got hit with it and all of a sudden Maggie was paying the southerners 'hard winter' payments. Didnt matter we'd been suffering before hand, it only became important when it hit london. Us common northerners don't count you see lol. [:D]

[;)] It's adopted as 'the national anthem', but its actually a patriotic hymn. [8\|] It's never been offically recognised in anyway whatsoever as the national anthem by any Royal decree or Parliament in the UK.[:D] I prefere Land of Hope and Glory on Proms night myself...

I believe the music is the Emperor of Austria's Hymn, by Haydn or someone like that, and has been used by us, Liechtenstein and the Americans have words for it too, though somewhat different to God Save The Queen I venture. Agree with Land Of Hope And Glory btw; written by a local lad as it happens. Though doesnt that have "dodgy" bits in it too? E
