After a lot of research has been done about the long term affects on children of staying together vs splitting up - I understand that they are a consideration, but living in an unhappy home is NOT right for them, so the theory of "staying together for the children" is not a valid one. They need to be in a loving, happy environment, and the one described by you earlier is not. They need stability, and your relationship as it stands doesn't sound like it is very stable. They need to know that, no matter what is going on between you and your wife, that you both love them just as much. If you cannot work things out, then end the marriage - don't make them stay in an unhappy, negative home.
