it wasn't the terminology that i saw as making it all absolute, but the phrasology... you jump from "i allow" and "i do this" to "i would never allow... it is disrespectful" to "i would never... it is disrespectful" it lends it self to absolution with no middle ground, or gray area like if i were a Dominant, i would not allow my submissive to use a petname with me, simply because i don't like them likewise, as a submissive; i do not use a petname with Ma'am for the same reason... and i don't think She'd allow it... because it can be disrespectful also, there was nothing wrong with your original title, and using the prase "terms of endearment" takes from the meaning... a term of endearment is usually thought of as terms such as Dear, Love, Sweetheart, Honey and Darling; which Ma'am uses with me, calling me Sweets (and i know many liberated women consider these affrontary diminutives, but one can get too picky); i feel that using these are based on the level of familiarity between the two, and i personally consider "Ma'am" to be a term of endearment, that i use to show my love and devotion to Her that earned it as Her due... but a pet name is usually something more personal and descriptive between the two parties
