OOOOOOOOOOOOO scary topic!

It occurs to me from another thread, that we all wonder about the other at times.

I was 28 before I ever felt a black woman's hair.

In our home we rented out the downstairs to foreign college students. Primarily middle eastern and east African when times were not so violent (early 70's). They shared their cultures and I shared mine. We shared a healthy curiosity and asked the why-type questions without fear of not being PC.

Face it- Most white girls do NOT have an ass. When I put on a few pounds, I don't get an ass.. I get hips!
We ARE rhythm challenged. We need to learn to embrace our (edited to correct spelling) down-beat!

I wonder if it would be possible for us to ask the child-like questions that makes us curious about each other's race without it becoming a race war. Let's keep the politics out of it. Let's share what haunts us or befuddles us.

So let's ask each other the questions we have always wondered without it being taken as derogatory or inflammatory.

So, I'll start. I have noticed that each race has their own unique scent. I noticed that blacks a have a "sweet" type of scent. Middle easterners have a more earthy one. Nothing offensive across the board.. just a difference- What do Caucasians smell like to you? I have heard that Asians find our scent offesive because of the red meat in our diet. They are more vegan and pick up on it.

If this gets out of hand..but I don't think it should. I will not take offense to the Mods closing up shop on it.

I have traveled a lot and studied some biology. It is my opinion that the aroma of different people is due to diet and not to ethnicity.

yes very true thompson.....so where can we go with the race thread now? We have just offended most of humanity by saying they smell, are the Afro-carribeans more athletic cos they chuck spears? Weird that cos if anything the white man should be faster after having spears chucked AT them!

For the ass and rythm challenged..speak for yourself dear, i am whiter than white and boogie like no one, so you are generalising (suprise!) Also as for the Race war........here we go again!

I hope we can keep this to polite curiosity...... and not fall into the stereotyping trap, not only because its offensive, but also because its ridiculous. The stereotype that all black people can sing and have rhythm for instance - untrue! Though person to person they do seem to come out of it better.

Here's stuff I'd like to know, but having only met one black person (when I was five and didnt think about such things), have never had the chance to find out (we have loads of people from the Indian subcontinent in my town, but no black people, weird). What I'd really like is to find me a black guy to take a closer look - I find the skin colour fascinating and rather attractive!

This is going to sound stupid, probably - and I truly dont want it to come across as anything but curiosity, but hey;

1) do black guys have body hair? I'm thinking yes, but maybe not as noticeable?
2) is a circumcised penis the same colour as the foreskin? I'm thinking yes, but?
3) are the bits between the toes the same colour as the rest of the skin? I'm thinking yes, but?

And if anyone wants to know anything about me as a blonde(ish) blue eyed Germanic type along the same lines, then please ask away.

I'm going to ignore you on this one. It was not my intention. I gave my own mid-western observations.

And don't cha know.. all the white guys I dated thought they could "boogie like no one"? LOL NOT!

Living in Montana i don't have the chance to meet and talk with any other race. i am open to all as long as they are honest people. i don't really have any questions for anyone, after all we are all pink on the inside...i am Italian by background and i know i don't the pretty pink nipples and stuff like my very white girlfriends have...but i am still me...dang it all....giggles

We were at the Folsom Street Fair last year and a fascinated Asian man with a camera approached us. He asked permission to photograph and then asked Master...."Please excuse if this is rude question, but how do you get her nipples to be pink like that?"

Now i know this is abit over generalised..........

but do ppl with darker/olive skin tan better? YES! i'm a pale fair skinned chick, my daugher is olive skinned. 3 hours at the beach = a beautiful darker tan on her and red burning skin on me. Can we say, shoot MY mother for letting me be created with fair skin?

ok, i'm going to go off on a rant on this. Because i am slightly envious. Here, i have to sit out in the sun and tan and tan and tan, sunburn, heal and tan some more.. all the while hoping i dont catch skin cancer.. working HARD on that damn tan so i can be other then pasty white....... And my daughter...... the punk she is.... will never ever ever have to do it. She walks in the sun and BOOM - beautiful tan. No skin cancer, no sun related wrinkles, no hours of sunburn pain, no hours of sitting around bored chitless trying to tan.

On top of that she can already dance better then me = (

i think i should applaud myself for thinking ahead for her future skin care and shoot my own mother for not thinking about mine.

I think there ARE differences in race and cultures. i think they should be celebrated. Enjoyed. Its what makes the world so fantastically unique. Why's talking about race have to result in people being offended?

Isn't it amazing that there are still areas like you live in?

As curious as we are about each other... we are afraid to ask the simple questions.

I prefer white slaves and subs but in the past have had a black sub or two,ITS nothing personal its just our preference...A delightful yummy female could change my mind, my brother has two biracial slaves and they do just fine,ITS not the color of the skin but how she wears her/his collar that matters.Her devotion and loyal service to her/his owner.....bounty

Ok, i was just educated on the difference of Race and culture.

IMO - i think race is abit boring.

Culture is much more interesting.

Race is just skin color?? Well GAH - how BORING. i mean really, how can you have tons of uniqueness with that?

Lets talk culture instead. Much much more interesting

stereotypes can even happen within your own race too. when i was attending unversity in OK, most of my friends thought i was adopted and my parents were white because i spoke too proper to be Black. they even thought i came from the ghetto (like that 70s sitcom "Good Times"). they were amazed my parents owned not rented their house, sent me to private schooling, etc. yet this was how my parents raised me (including doing the debutante thing with i was 18) to be a well-rounded, intelligent and intellectual individual.

Greetings

I tend not to look at people through the color of their skin; I perfer to see them as individuals. Every individual is unique in their own way.

As mentioned though, I do look closely at different cultures. I find them fascinating and will often ask questions non stop in my efforts to understand the differences.

Thank you for "getting" this thread! I know I have a sense of humor about my race. I no offense when a comedian brings it up (thinking Carlos Mensea). I can tell you honestly that I didn't know "Beaner"was a slur. I never used it- but when I heard it, I just thought is was an endearment.

I wonder how many of us avoid talking in depth to each other for fear of treading on a word or belief system we didn't KNOW would cause an affront.

My first marriage proposal was from an Iranian gentleman. He was gorgeous! He proposed and then told me we would have to live in Iran and with hi smother and his 10 siblings but I would have the honor of being his first wife, but I'd have to convert to Islam (again early 70's).

Being a tender 19, I told him I would expect him to convert to Catholicism. He was shocked that I even thought that. Needless to say, I told him I had to decline as our cultures were so different and being who I am, I would never bring him peace. I'm sure a mere woman rejecting his offer was humiliating. When in effect, I was simply reflecting what I knew about myself from my own culture.

Smell can be caused by diet, environment and bathing habits and these things then get imbedded into a culture. So to me American Caucasians do not really smell one way or the other but a lot of that has to do with living in relatively order free environments, obsessive self cleaning (not that is not a good thing), and a somewhat random diet.

We do not come out of the womb smelling different but our lives and what we are use to and like just is different from how we live and get use to.

Growing up as a minority you have to learn the difference between stereotyping, racism and ignorance of cultural differences as you experience it on an almost daily basis. I will be honest I kind of get a kick out of these threads as it is always the Caucasians that seem to get bent out of shape.

I agree with Devilslilsister that I am more interested in cultural differences and skin color is at best secondary. I will add, what is the deal with Caucasians and tanning?

Let me get this back on track with an example:

When I was in high school. I recall enthusiastically referring the hairdressser I went to, to a black girlfriend of mine. She told me she preferred the one she went to, but thanks anyway. She told me she needed to see her beautician because they specialized in black hair. I never knew there was a specialty or that black hair was different. (remember, I never came in contact with that hair type until age 28).

I'm sure I was seen as clueless - and I was.

besides physical differences, most of the differences between those of different races aren't truly race-baed but more cultural differences.

with that said, i'll admit to at times having a curiousity about those of other races. Lotus mentioned the smell thing...i have noticed that people of different races tend to smell differently, and i do not think this is a cultural diet thing as i think in this day and age, especially in the west, people and their tastes are so diverse that sweeping generalizations like "blacks eat lots of pork" and "asians eat lots of rice" just no longer hold true. i am hoping beyond hope that no one takes personal offense to this, but i have always noticed that caucasians have a sour dairy sort of odor to them when they are wet, like from sweating or when caught in the rain. i have also occasionally noticed this scent in biracial people who are half white, tho not always. but for as long as i can remember, there has been a saying in the black community that you never want to be around a white person when they are wet.

oh and as for the stereotype of all blacks having rhythm...how i wish that were true!! i have never been coordinated in any way or had any sort of rhythm, and was often teased when i was younger by my black peers for dancing "like a white girl." so obviously that particular trait just passed me by lol.

Well part of the deal with caucasians and tanning, is that it produces vitamins(D and some others), which make us feel good. More importantly it is a sign of being rich, having time to sit around and tan. Similar to being thin. In the old days being fat was a sign of wealth, now being fit is(In America, anyway). It's also partly fashion programing by the corprate media. An interesting Cultral trait I recently learned, is that in China and other parts of Asia, women go to get thier skin lightened, and have for centuries. For the same reason, it denotes wealth... not having to work outside/labor. I was told that in offices the Chinese will fight to not have to sit by the window.

Now THAT I can answer! The description "pasty-white or fish-belly white" spurns us on! Too white and we look sick- so we try to darken a bit. Also, now I don't know if it still applies, being tan means you were an outside person, i.e. athletic). Over the years it has changed. Back in the pre 50's.. neon white skin was seen as aristocratic and the only tan white were the ones working the farms. It fluctuates- sometimes tan is in.. other times it's out.
