ORIGINAL: sambamanslilgirl and again you're not seeing it from my pov. you don't live in my neighborhood so you personally wouldn't understand the needs of THIS BLACK neighborhood. get my drift now? THIS neighborhood doesn't have ANY small businesses in the area ...no mom-n-pop stands for Wal-Mart to compete or draw supplies to stock their shelves. now unless they go into the hair/nail salon, laundry mat, or fish-chicken-rib shack business, Well I'm from Chicago and lived near Englewood for 4 years while going to college. Quite simply you're wrong. There are small businesses in the area and things down there are improving. Garfield from the Dan Ryan to Hyde Park is seeing quite a bit of development. Yes, a lot of the businesses remain liquor stores, convenience stores and fast food but that is the limit on what can go into small storefronts in existing buildings. However as Hyde Park pushes west and the demand for new construction increases you will see more new larger stores like grocery stores. As to Wal-Mart you seem to misunderstand how little they pay. It isn't $9 hr. or more. it is more like $7 hour and part time with no benefits. There are 2 Wal Marts in the near north burbs paying those wages so you can check into it. One is on Golf Rd in Niles and another is on Touhy in I think Morton Grove. You should also be aware that Wal Mart likely would have fast food and a hair/nail salon in any store they opened in Englewood which would directly impact those small business people.
