Clinton had been in office all of a month at that point.

You know, you can come up with all sorts of analogies but here is one off the top of my head.  If the chief of police in your town was having all sorts of personal problems, would that excuse him from investigating the murder of your spouse or child?

Your analogy doesn't work for the time before 9/11. A more exact analogy would be a police chief who is distracted and doesn't identify a potential murderer.

Last comment on 9/11:

Two colleagues perished aboard the plane that hit the Pentagon, and a childhood friend (with whom I'd lost contact, alas) died at the WTC. My sister, in New York, lost at least a dozen friends that day.

Those losses have left me with a deep distaste for folks, on either side of the aisle, using the tragedy as a way to score partisan points. Anyone else feel likewise?

Why did '93 happen?  Because we had sleeper cells in this country at least in part because of rediculously lax immigration laws.  Because you could still buy 50/50 fertilizer.  Because the scope of the operation was MUCH MUCH smaller than 9/11.  Nope, I think my analogy is pretty prescient especially if you apply it to 9/11.  The question is not so much why did the '93 bombing occur as what was done after '93.  *Raises his hand*  I know, I know!  Nothing!

And those sleeper cells all arrived and formed in January 1993? If not, one needs also to look at the first Bush Administration.

The War on Terror should have started in '93. Bin Laden should have been taken by the U.S. in '96 and he should have been blown to bits in '98.

A good deal earlier I believe if the US Taxpayers were picking up the costs of A'li North's security against the guy.

Remember the expensive security system we installed in his house to keep Bin Ladin at bay?

Who did A'li North work for again?

Yup.

Have you ever read any John LeCarre???  The people that made up the sleeper cells may very well have in the late 70's or early 80's before they were activated.

FINALLY!  So farglebargle supports the War on Terror but thinks it should have started earlier!  Bravo!  I agree with Farglebargle!

Doesn't he write fiction?

In that case, blaming the 1993 bombing on the Clinton Administration is a bit odd.

Wow....you need to go back and read my posts again.  I'll say it slowly, Clinton did nothing after the '93 bombing.  Once more...Clinton did nothing after the '93 bombing.  A third time?

I definitely blame Clinton for 9/11.  (I blame Clinton for the 19 dead Americans in Somalia too but that's a whole other topic.)  Had Clinton began the War on Terror--as it has been done under Bush--you wouldn't have had 9/11.  We still have both the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Sears Tower and the Library Tower.  Terrorist plans were foiled for the destruction of all of those landmarks.  Being very close in proximity to the World Trade Centers, everyone I spoke with, and me as well, believed that homeland terrorism was going to be a regular part of the American landscape.  It hasn't.  I thank my President for that.  I hope I will be able to thank our next President for that as well.

It's hard to stay away from the subject, DC.  Those events were so pivotal....  We have to learn, and that means some of us have to be wrong sometimes when we talk about it.

My sympathies on your losses.  If it is any comfort at all, I try to make sure I smack on both sides with that stick.

Interesting. What's your source for that?

Agreed. But I think, as a onetime history major, that there's a big difference between honestly trying to understand the past, in all its facets, and using bits of it to score partisan points.

Bomb tunnel, flood city
One man is busted in Beirut, others hunted across
globe and terrorists are seen linked to Zarqawi

BY ALLISON GENDAR in New York
and JAMES GORDON MEEK in Washington
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITERS
New Jersey-bound traffic speeds through Holland Tunnel beneath more than 40 feet of earth and concrete - and the Hudson. Experts say that terrorists would need huge amount of explosives, and even more expertise to have a chance to rupture the tunnel.
The FBI has uncovered what officials consider a serious plot by jihadists to bomb the Holland Tunnel in hopes of causing a torrent of water to deluge lower Manhattan, the Daily News has learned.
The terrorists sought to drown the Financial District as New Orleans was by Hurricane Katrina, sources said. They also wanted to attack subways and other tunnels.

That is ONE article out of dozens only as it applies to the Holland Tunnel.  But more importantly, I hope you are going to be citing sources for your posts because I'm going to be asking for them.

According to a CNN-Gallup poll...
38% of Americans say they approve of how President Bush is handling his job
33% of Americans say they approve of the Democrat-controlled congress. Keep in mind, the support for congress when the GOP controlled it in October last year before the election was 32%.

Last time I checked....Kaptain Kangaroo was doing better than GW.
