Fast reply: not having read the entire thread. I think Imus was wrong for saying what he did. I think it was insensitive. But he said it and he did the right thing after he said it and apologized. I am not an Imus fan, but I have heard him and I believe he is sincere. Here are a couple of things that just piss me off about the whole thing. Jesse Jackson is out on front of NBC picketing for him to be fired. Umm, Rev. Jackson: Didn't you refer to New York as " hymie town " ? Was that not a racist statement? Should you not have suffered greater consequences for your " mistake"? And Rev. Jackson ? Did you read the part of the bible that says something about casting the first stone? Or was that omitted in your seminary studies? Pot-kettle-black, Rev Jackson. You are a hypocrite. I listened to the press conference by Rutgers and the students today. The coach of the girls basketball team, a black woman herself, called these girls " articulate young women". Didn't Mitt Romney say he thought Obama was "articulate" and take a ration of shit about the use of that word, in reference to black people, being racist? Wasn't this coach saying her girls were a " bit above" other black girls becasue they were articulate? Wake up America.. calling someone, anyone articulate is a compliment, not a racial slur. I think it was the president of the Univ who said the school was doing everything possible to get help for these girls so that Imus's words would not Affect their academics. Affect their academics? Puhlease. I highly doubt these young ladies will suffer academically from this event. By all accounts they are excellent students, bright young ladies with a combined grade point average of over 3.6. I just don't see them tossing their books out the window, curling up in a ball and aborting their studies. I, for one, give them more credit than that. I think Imus was wrong, but I think the public/media outrage is soo over the top, it sickens me. Is this really the biggest story in America the last two days. Because it has been the lead in story on vitually every news station. A racist is some one who has a hatred or intolerance of other races. Not some one who uses poor judgement in choosing his words. The word racist has been diluted over the last decade. The word always reffered to the fringe, the lunatic side, such a KKK, Arayans Nation, etc. Nowadays all it takes is one unthought, insensitive word and you are hung out as a racist. It really doesn't have the profoundly negative impact it used to have. 20 years ago, one would be highly insulted to be called a racist, many would be ostrisized from polite company, now it just a word used to refer to someone who is not ubber PC. And before anyone goes throwing stones at me, I do not tolerate any deragotory names or words in my home. I don't care what color, race, or culture you come from, you just cannot say them in my home. I don't approve of them, and in my home, I expect it to be respected, no matter who you are. mbmbn
