ORIGINAL: popeye1250 The last time I checked it's not against the law to "offend" someone. We need to guard against "Political Correctness" just as much as we need to guard against Racism. Oh, in Ireland "Nappy" means diaper. I don't know if this is about the "law", I think it is about the fact that Imus works for NBC, and while performing that job said some shit that pissed some people off. I mean when I worked in sales, which is close to what talk show hosts are, basicly paid to talk to people, in order to make money. I would have been fired so fast if I called someone any offensive name on the job. That is really the point. Granted he is a talk show host. However, the job of the talk show host is to entertain, and keep people interested. He fucked up and crossed that line to were he was ridiculing directly. This is only a problem in my view because he did it while under the employ of NBC(or any corporation or entity). I'm not offended, or even care at all that he used the word. I really don't care at all what anyone says for the most part, I'll just tell them to go fuck themselves if I don't like it. But it is a whole other ball game when you are WORKING for someone and use those terms. That is the issue in my view, that he did it WHILE working for someone else, that doesn't approve of that speech. If I hire Popeye1250 to work my customer service desk, I really don't care if you hate everyone under the sun. I don't care if think white people are pieces shit, or think jews should burn in the ovens. I'm not saying that you believe that, just such things I don't care about. What I care about is that you have the mental capacity to represent NeedToUseYou Corp. in a manner in-line with accepted standards set by the company. If you then went and referred to some customers as Jigaboos. I would fire you. I wouldn't fire you because you felt that way, I don't care what the employee feels about in that regard. I'd fire you because that statement could really piss off the only people I care about in relation to the company,CUSTOMERS. So, your ass would hit the door. Now, on your off time do what you want. I don't care. And that is exactly what NBC is doing. They don't care about Imus, they don't care what he said, they care about the only thing that matters to them as a company, and that is viewers(Customers). So, as a business, it is in their interest to punish him for pissing off their customers, or fire him if that is what it takes to retain customers. It's business, it's not about freedom of speech, You don't really enjoy that privilege at work.
