XahleenaXkajiraX -> Freedom Of Speech?!? (4/9/2007 9:03:47 PM)

*steps on the soap box with a sly smile*
Just need to get something off my chest... Don Imus on His talk-radio station recently made the racist and sexiest comment about a womans basketball team. (if You didnt know lol) But whats reallyyyy digging at me is when did this country take away our 1st amendment, when can we no longer speak our minds?!? Don Imus as a citizen of this country has every right to voice his own opinion about a womans basketball team, make it either sexiest or racist. NO i do not agree with the man one bit, but it really irriatates me when A man can no longer voice his own opinion about something he wishes to say. Just an example is the Texas V. Johnson, 491 U.S. 397 in 1989 Supreme Court Case... Ok lets just analyze this bad boy.. after a march the American flag was set aflame by protestors.. Ok now to me this is insane, disrespectful and just planly rude but i agree completely these citizens HAD that right to do so. But to me Our rights are slowly starting to fade no they havent officially been taken away but my gosh this man is getting so much media attention (yes it could have been a media stunt to do just that). Maybe Im out of my league on this and if i am excuse me but I believe in protecting our rights, its crucial. This man could have been talking about the Marines (Hubby is in the corps) He could have been talking about God or Christians (Active Christian) or any legal issue I support with a whole heart and Yes I would be highly pissed and probably not like the man much but in the end I would know that I would want only to have as much freedom of speech as this man... and He could voice His opinions against all of My own personal beliefs and I would respect Him in the end for giving them even if I highly disagree. So tell me what You think! Do you think Im completely off the edge with this... do You think I should shut up and get off the computer *grins* Hey this is my right *gotta love this Country* *xoxo* Lindsey

from Fox News:

"Syndicated talk-radio personality Don Imus apologized Friday for calling members of the Rutgers University women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos" during a segment yesterday in his "Imus in the Morning" show.

Imus and his producer and on-air sidekick, Bernard McGuirk, went on to further attack the black members of the team, calling them "jigaboos and wannabees."

In his apology, Imus called his comments "insensitive and ill-conceived."

      Amen.  If Rosie gets to stay on the air, so does Imus (even if he is a mumbling asshole).

XahleenaXkajiraX -> RE: Freedom Of Speech?!? (4/9/2007 9:08:32 PM)

oooo dont even get me started on Rosie *giggles*

wfsubseeking1 -> RE: Freedom Of Speech?!? (4/9/2007 9:10:22 PM)

i dont get why folks want to start a new thread about this when one has already been started?  Why can't all the discussions be in that instead of trying to have 2 to 3 threads about basically the same issue?

XahleenaXkajiraX -> RE: Freedom Of Speech?!? (4/9/2007 9:15:32 PM)

*shrugs* why post to them? why dont you just stick to the one.. I hardly want to go to someone else posts when I can rant just fine on my own

Ahhhhh,....because she felt like it?
"Freedom of Speech" is the title of this thread if you hadn't noticed.
Ok, what did Imus do now?

Tuomas -> RE: Freedom Of Speech?!? (4/9/2007 9:16:56 PM)

Question: Did he say, "I think (basketball team) are a bunch of nappy-headed hos"; or did he say, "I think they are a bunch of nappy-headed hos"?

XahleenaXkajiraX -> RE: Freedom Of Speech?!? (4/9/2007 9:18:30 PM)

he said to the effect I believe *they are a bunch of nappy headed hoes* (what a random comment huh) ill research that lil bit...

Tuomas -> RE: Freedom Of Speech?!? (4/9/2007 9:22:22 PM)

It's the difference between slander and free speech [;)] The former should be be curtailed, and he could even be sued for it. The latter is his right.

Considering the popular American pastime of suing, I would say he said the latter [8|]

popeye1250 -> RE: Freedom Of Speech?!? (4/9/2007 9:23:07 PM)

That's all he said?

XahleenaXkajiraX -> RE: Freedom Of Speech?!? (4/9/2007 9:24:50 PM)

Here is what he said on his show...(with a co-worker I believe)

IMUS: That's some rough girls from Rutgers. Man, they got tattoos and --
McGUIRK: Some hard-core hos.
IMUS: That's some nappy-headed hos there. I'm gonna tell you that now, man, that's some -- woo. And the girls from Tennessee, they all look cute, you know, so, like -- kinda like -- I don't know.
McGUIRK: A Spike Lee thing.
...ROSENBERG: It was a tough watch. The more I look at Rutgers, they look exactly like the Toronto Raptors.

....Wonder why the Rosenberg and McGuirk guys arent getting the same degree of "bashing"

subfever -> RE: Freedom Of Speech?!? (4/9/2007 9:33:56 PM)

Does anyone even know what nappy-headed hos look like? I don't.

popeye1250 -> RE: Freedom Of Speech?!? (4/9/2007 9:35:03 PM)

That's all he said?
Why then is everyone making a big deal out of it?

Tuomas -> RE: Freedom Of Speech?!? (4/9/2007 9:35:43 PM)

Ah, I see. Well, he didn't exactly express who he was talking about, so it's kind of borderline. Still, had he prefaced it, "I think", he would have been better off. But, since he started off with "They are..." on a public address system (not a private conversation), it can be considered slander, and he should appologize.

It's one of the finer points of free speech [;)]

XahleenaXkajiraX -> RE: Freedom Of Speech?!? (4/9/2007 9:42:01 PM)

ah blah, finer points are not its bs... he shouldnt have to apologize for crap lol... and...subfever i have no clue what nappy headed hoes look like lolll [:'(]

NeedToUseYou -> RE: Freedom Of Speech?!? (4/9/2007 9:50:55 PM)

I've not seen this reported just heard about it on the forums. If that is all he said, then as much as I dislike Imus, I think this is going overboard. First thing nappy headed is just a reference to a hair type, generally directed at black people, but I've heard it used towards whites before, so whatever, it's passed into non-racial derogatory terminology land. And Ho's come on. I don't even care about the Ho's part.  And that term is used to mean everything from women in a non-demeaning manner to calling someone a whore. So, that isn't even a big deal.

Jeez, I completely can't stand to listen to Imus but this is retarded.

It's like getting mad if someone said those are some frizzy haired bitches.  Or saying those are some bald ass bastards.

It isn't completely perfectly PC, but hardly worth getting upset over either.

Who gives a fuck?

XahleenaXkajiraX -> RE: Freedom Of Speech?!? (4/9/2007 9:53:21 PM)

Exactly NeedtoUseYou... Completely agree with you i was just ranting about why he couldnt say such things... you make a good point. I could say so much more but wont... I'd have people after me *grins*

Tuomas -> RE: Freedom Of Speech?!? (4/9/2007 9:56:06 PM)

I agree with NTUY; the whole thing is blown way out of proprotion.

Earlier I mean that he should appologize if the people he refered to were offended. If they weren't, then he needn't bow to a bunch of people "speaking on their behalf". These girls should be able to stand up for themselves against some word bandering. And since I haven't seen the "affected parties" appear to make any complaint, then he shouldn't appologize.

Because it's Al Sharpton and IMO he hates his own nappiness since he keeps getting those perms....
It is just the newest thing he can bitch about to try and stir up racial tensions which is what he seems to love to do the most.

XahleenaXkajiraX -> RE: Freedom Of Speech?!? (4/9/2007 9:58:18 PM)

actually there is a confrence with them tommarow... Imus appeared on the Al Sharpton Show today *rolls eyes* made me sick...
