Oh, sorry, occupational hazard.  I get asked these kinds of questions all the time.  Tracks Eraser Pro is another very good privacy program.  Yes, I have personal information out on online forms also for the same reason.  And I also have the same type of hotmail and yahoo accounts :)

I think part of it is that people are curious about those with whom they interact. While I wouldn't feel right confronting someone with old information out of the blue, I would have zero problem when talking with someone who is interested in me if I told her that I have all intentions of googling her, as she would have every right to do the same to me. I am more interested in someone in the here and now, but I'd start to become a bit concerned if she was overly concerned that someone might be interested in her past.

Privacy is why I have two diferent email accounts. the one I use here for forums, chats and similar things and the other with my real name for profesional business. (well the truth is I have more than two but that's a secret xD)

I am going to post an opinion that is not in line with most I have read. On one hand it is not a complete invasion of privacy, on the other it is slightly creepy that someone would investigate an entire posting history for a screen name before I had even met them or began exploring a real relationship with them. If a man did this to me I would not continue discourse with him and I would worry he was a little obsessive to be honest. I do not do anything resembling research on people that I have no vested interest in, and talking a few times in email or in IM is NOT a vested interest. The type of people I like are the ones that are too busy with their lives to be overly focused on forum posts from a decade ago made by a prospect that might not pan out anyways... wait until at least the first date is over

You know people, there are all sorts of public records out there about you that someone could research and it is technically not an invasion of privacy.. your driving record, ownership of property, liens, court records of births, deaths, adoptions. I would find it creepy if someone looked up this information about me before I really knew them too...

I am from a small town. One thing that used to bug me is when I would hear people base their dating decisions based upon rumors that they would research about another individual. It is one thing to find out the basic facts of someone's life, but I knew of people that would go beyond that, trying to find out particulars of people they were not even dating yet... just interested in. I thought that creepy too.

I always googled when I was interested in someone. I was always more concerned when I found nothing... to me meant someone was very careful.. had seperate nicks for everyone? a little puzzeling..
Once,  a few years ago, I chatted with a Dom.. we decided to speak on the phone.. I had few min left on the cell, which I knew was safer, and I had used up my long distance card, so I agreed to let him call me on my home phone.. as soon as I answered, I got a lecture about how he now had my home address, and could show up at my door if he chose to.  I understood and appreciated his desire to warn me of this... but why google me if he was going to yell at me about it?
it's  good to be aware.. know it can be done, and act accordingly.
