         Rather the same situation with the broadcast networks, who also use public airwaves, deciding not to show the footage of Sept 11 anymore.  Now who has more influence, ABC, CBS, NBC or ClearChannel?

     Let's not forget the impact Al Gore had on what radio stations would promote and play back in the mid 80's.  Or is censorship ok when you agree with the censors?

BOUNTYHUNTER -> RE: Banning Books (4/22/2007 6:49:37 PM)

I don't believe in ban any thing thats a true expression of one self,Banning books no thats just about as bad as burning them..bounty

juliaoceania -> RE: Banning Books (4/22/2007 6:50:47 PM)

I am unaware of what the networks do and do not show because I do not watch TV Rich. Now I do not know why they do not show 9/11 footage anymore. I did not watch 9/11 footage after the buildings went down. In fact 9/11 caused me to quit watching tv. It became too Orwellian after that for me.

Since I have no knowledge about this, and no opinion about it, please illuminate the nefarious reasons they quit showing the footage

Edited to add, why do you get so bent out of shape that conservatives do bad crap? I mean really, you take it so personally! Al Gore has a large carbon footprint.. who fucking cares? Hillary Clinton is a two faced bitch...I could care less! I am constantly reading "well so and so did this" every time I make a point, as if two wrongs make a right.. it is rather amusing.

      I get 'bent out of shape' by double standards, Julia.  Particularly when those who will so easily turn a blind eye claim the high ground of 'progressive' values.  If it seems I target you specifically, perhaps it's because you so often carry the banner.  Of course, with over 8300 posts in 368 days (Happy Belated CM B-day btw), I'm statistically insignificant in my replies.

    My understanding is that the major broadcast networks decided the 9/11 footage was too inflammatory.  I see Orwell there as well but in recent years the people who are achieving making thoughts into crimes seem to me to be on the Left.

I think that was Al Gore's wife Tipper who headed a group that wanted to clean up the airwaves.

       That is correct Popeye, along with a few other prominent wives, but it was Big Al who dragged the rockers up before the Senate for hearings.

Oh... lest anyone forget this Democrat (at least at the time) and this Republican duo

DarkDreams123 -> RE: Banning Books (4/22/2007 11:28:47 PM)

I think we should be clear about the topic of banning and censorship.

Here is a definition of censorship from Wikipedia:

"Censorship is the removal or withholding of information from the public by a controlling group or body." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship

The article in your link refers to people objecting to certain books being used in school or being present in school or public libraries. Since this is a free society, and since taxpayer money is used to stock the shelves of school libraries and public libraries, I see no problem when someone uses their right to petition to seek to have these institutions conform to their point of view. If enough people in the community agree, those institutions should bow to the will of the majority. That's democracy.

Banning a book from a library is hardly equivalent to censorship. The book is still readily available at any bookstore.

Even if I do not agree with the people who sought to have these books banned from their local libraries, I defend their right to do so.

Freedom works both ways, folks. You want your freedoms? Remember to give the same rights to your opponent.

Julia, funny site that!

Nothing the religious zealots will try to ban surprises me.
I spent 12 years in parochial school.

I think that's where I first started to realize that Al Gore has the exact personality of a hokey TV Preacher

     Of course.  Difference being, I expect that sort of crap from the Repubs.  Artistic freedom is supposed to be a Liberal value.

       Gore lost my vote before I ever had it.  Maybe I'm a petty, grudge holding, son-of-a-bitch, but he'll never get it back.

Thanks for registering your opinion about Al Gore, newsflash, he is not running and he never had the chance to serve out his presidency...

As far as Tipper goes, who cares? I find it is much more effective to deal with individuals instead of what flavor of ice cream they are... she is what she is. I know some people feel the need to put life into neat categorical boxes, claim a team, and defend that team like your doing here. Tipper is not on my team.

I do not have a team... slam away at people I do not know, it is not going to bother me. There are few public figures worth wasting a breath on. I am surprised you have not noticed... I rarely defend people (unless I think they are being lied about), I defend ideas when it comes to politics.

The thing is that the Republicans have done more to piss me off, and as far as freedom... I hate censorship, I am not going to defend either "side" that does it. You believe there is a difference between the parties. I don't. I am just not that naive.

Is singing other peoples songs really art?

Bob Dylan wrote a song called "Knocking on Heavens Door."  He then put it on an album where his lack of singing talent resulted in a profound butchery of his art.

Axl Rose singing that with Guns N Roses, to me, is almost transcendant in it's beauty and artistry.

Bob Dylan did the same thing with a song called "All Along The Watchtower," which Jimi Hendrix made transcendant in his own way.

So yes, singing other people's songs can be art.

If you are talking about the Dixie Chicks... they write a lot of their music....

Emily Robison (born August 16, 1972) is an American country songwriter, singer, and multi-instrumentalist, and a founding member of the all-female country music band the Dixie Chicks.

Martie Maguire (born October 12, 1969) is an American country music songwriter, singer, and multi-instrumentalist, and a founding member of the all-female country music band the Dixie Chicks.

Natalie Louise Maines (born on October 14, 1974 in Lubbock, Texas) is an American country music singer and songwriter who achieved success as the lead singer for the female country music band Dixie Chicks.

Just sayin. I do not really like country western or the Dixie Chicks, but that does not mean what they do is not art. I do not like Barbara Streisand either

and as Sinergy stated, interpretation of another's music can be art.

My former dom was a lifelong touring musician. He then went on to the business end of the music business and was an executive for a small label. He said that there were craftsmen who were technically great, and then there were interpreters that were artists...

luckydog1 -> RE: Banning Books (4/23/2007 9:57:00 AM)

Ok Sinergy, I will agree with you on that.  Covers can be art.  And songs can be poems/literature.

luckydog1 -> RE: Banning Books (4/23/2007 10:00:49 AM)

Bounty, if the 'book' is not banned by the gov, burning it is no big deal.  You can still get the 'book', they can print more.  All that has been done is give money to the 'book'.  Sort of like driving down to the 'No War For Oil' rally,"let's all travell to DC,ect"
