This will sound hard to believe, but we actually have some of "old skool" memories some of you folks are thinking about, lol

I mentioned our last remaining drive-in. We have a ton of mom and pop diners. Kids playing in our street, shooting hoops. There's ONE full service gas station in my city. Local bakeries. =)

Eh, my little city isn't exactly a paradise, though. It's just another Rust Belt blue collar town with very working class roots. Old habits die hard.

Wow, you all dont make me feel quite so bad.
I grew up in Coney Island, Brooklyn, NY. From when I was a kid, things have realy changed, somce for th better... far far safer later on. Some, not so much.

Sno cones, shaved from a big block of ice when you ordered them
Walking up and down the beach and boardwalk barefoot all summer
Riding the Cyclone in the dark becasue we knew the guy who owned it and hed let us get on "just this once" after hours
Buying pickles out of a barrel at the little deli on the corner
Pick-up games of kickball or dodgeball on the playgrounds

Ahh, those were the days

corner/neighborhood stores

My grandmother owned one.

Very true; you don't see these anymore too often unless you go into what you know is an old, established neighborhood ( Whiting Indiana still has corner drugstores/butcher stores )
We have an Arnold's where I live; one of those drive up restaurants with the girls on skates. It's the place all the high school kids take their cars to show them off.

I feel fortunate to live in Madison, WI.  We still have corner grocery stores, independent specialty shops, local bakeries, farmer's markets, diners, delis, many outdoor activities for kids and adults, etc.  We are a community oriented big small town.  Not perfect by any means.  lol

And seatbelts weren't standard in cars.

Well, with a little work you can still find cars around that have never had them, and are "grandfathered" through the seatbelt law... but they can have their tradeoffs! Although oddly enough, it's less expensive to insure my 340 horsepower, 44-year-old car with drum brakes, no seatbelts, and a big steel steering column pointed right at your chest than wife's nimble, computer-designed, crumple-zoned, anti-lock-brake, stability-controlled hatchback.

Speaking of which, i will add four-door hardtops to the list, for the dozen or so people here who may know what i'm talking about And you don't see nearly enough cars with fins, either. And pickup trucks with steel bumpers. What marketing idiot thought it would be a good idea to put PLASTIC bumpers on a TRUCK!?

Ice cold milk in glass bottles.

Oh yes, the milkman. Those little tin boxes that sat on your stoop(porch) where you left a note that in the wee hours of the morning miraculously got filled with milk, OJ, eggs and cheese.

And the market carts, the guys who had horse drawn wagons who went through the neighborhoods yelling "watermelon, cantaloupe, fresh corn, blue crabs, fresh fish" daily.

Yup those were the good ole days
I can remember chopping cotten & picking cotten  for a $1.10 a hundred pounds  & hauling hay for a nickle a bail all day long from sun up till sundown & if you had $10.00 you could fill your car up , go to a movie on a date or the skatingrink buy snacks & still have money left, get 3 songs on the jukebox for a quarter  & not to ruffel feathers but gas then was 24.9 a gallon.....
yup getting older but it dosen't feel like it just can't do all the things like I used to could do

Things I miss.

One someone already said......kids being able to play outside, running all over creation without a care in the world.

When a kid got into trouble, a knowing adult called your mom, your mom told your dad, you got your butt beat and had to make it right. Usually by getting marched over to the offendee's house and made to appologise. If there was property damage you had to find a way to pay for it. Today, they just call the police and the parents have to take the heat.

Sitting on the porch in metal lawn furniture watching it rain with thunder and lightening and not a thought to the fact you were sitting in a metal chair and there was lightening......

Kids playing in the rain and mud. Germs!!! what germs?!?!?

10 cent soft serve ice cream cones at the corner grocery store in the heat of summer.

Tatoos only on creepy old school janitors and someone under the age of 30 with only two peircings, one in each ear. Oh, and Farrah Faucett hairdos.

Young guys with old half rebuilt, muscle cars cruising the main drag next to the old family pickups full of loud teenagers passing cold beers back and forth.....and the occasional joint....

Homemade popcorn balls and caramel apples were the best treats to get on Halloween.

Red metal flying saucer sleds.

Kids wearing hard soled leather shoes to school every day, sneakers were for playing in.  No kid got to wear jeans to school, ever!
