Not to mention that we thought we were the 'shitz' if we got to ride our skateboards to school.

Anybody see the movie Lordz of Dogtown?

I stopped riding a skateboard with rock wheels and got urethane wheels around the same time they did.

Status: offline 		the neighborhood welcome wagon (neighbors bringing dinner to the families who just moved to the block) ...drive-ins (gawd what memories hiding in the backseat of my cousin's car so i could get in for free) ...roller rinks (not too many left around the Chicagoland area) in the city itself ...HoJos (my fondest memories going to PA for the summer and stopping off at a Howard Johonson's to eat - they had good pancakes!)

I remember when they switched the wheels on skateboards and when they stopped making wooden boards period because they were unsafe lol.

Urethane wheels and precision bearings.  Could leave your skateboard in the sand and the wheels roll when you are done.

I never got in to breaking in to backyard pools and riding my board.  I used it to get to the beach or go fishing.

Not sure they went from wood to plastic for safety, wood doesnt flex like plastic does and there are tricks you cannot do on wood.   Although, having said that, there is a local company that has a laminate wooden board that flexes just right.  Technology marches onwards.

JESUS that was a goofy look.

To even it out across the genders though, I will say that I am glad nobody has tried to bring back "galaxy wash" jeans or that bastardization of the equally ridiculous "sweatpants" called Zubaz. Those seemed to be the love-child of mc hammer pants and pleated librarian slacks. With a quick bit of generra "hypercolor" thrown in just for kicks.

Worry not, I am very sure it will not stick beyond art school girls tired of member's only jacket wearing hipsters.

Another thing you don't see anymore:
Hardee's. Dang i miss their sourdough fat-bomb breakfast sandwiches.

  • Those Hugh Jazz cell phones that never dropped a call or got misplaced.
  • Schoolhouse Rock and Electric Company
  • Saturday Night Live episodes that are actually funny

  • horror movies that were actually scary and not just gorefests

There have been very few of these lately.
I have a theory that gore vs. psychological terror directly coincides with the party the current president belongs to.

Anyway...
See "The Descent".
I find it to be one of the best of that genre in recent years. The archetypes and progressions are rather seated in not only storytelling, but also psychology and philosophy.
descent into darkness
crossing the void
fury of fears
baptism/redemption in blood/rebirth
definition of self
return to the womb
transformation in due light of occurrences...

It's a thinking Person's film.
As gory as you may think it while watching.

Edit:
Not quite as good as The Shining, but just as engaging.

Old fashioned hardware stores where you could get the
type and quantity of what you wanted and it all was not
shrink rapped.  Just tucked away in an infinite number of
little bins and cubby holes all around the store.

Motorcycles you could kick start that would get you home
even if you left the lights on and ran the battery down. Actually
I have one of these which I will probably never sell, but its old.

An economy which would permit a store owner to pay enough
to clerks to they stay long enough to really know their business.
Examples: Hardware store above, auto parts. etc.

I loved The Shining (big Stephen King fan), but despite the recommendations of The Blockbuster Guy (tm), I wasn't impressed by The Descent. I couldn't get into the characters, and I just kept thinking how appropriate it would be if they all would have throttled that one girl for her "great idea".

True, there is a handful of "suspension of disbelief"/character detatchment that accompanies the movie. For Me, though, it was perhaps the best divergence from hollywood/big studio formula that I have seen released on the big screen in ages. Don't get Me wrong, I am not a horror film fanatic, but it beat the SHIT out of saw and the hostel as far as integrating a humanistic element.

My father owned hardware stores since I was three years old. I started working at them when i was 13. Some of My fondest memories of those times are helping old guys fix their daughter's broken shelving in her apartment and helping newlywed couples in their new house repair the things the inspector missed during appraisal. I'm going to go off on a tangent here, a "rant", if you will...

The "big box" stores lack the concern and helpfulness of the do-it-yourself ethos. I spent My high school and college years working at hardware stores and learning about the operation of systems. That all things are made of mere interacting parts compounding upon each and as easily as one is reliant upon another. They are, by the nature of their presence, selected to be there by the suzerain who decided. The major problem I have with home depot and the like is that they compartmentalize product in a way that would make macgyver get a side ache from running around that damn two acres of concrete. In fact, one of My biggest pet peeves about this phenom is when I need to get one fastener of one size (say...a 3/8-16 stainless steel locknut for something I am building) and the clerk just points and says "um...walk that way until you see a sign that says nuts and bolts?" And so I walk back to the aisle I was just in and have to buy a pack of 3 nuts and 7 lock-washers for seven dollars. Hell, when i worked in hardware stores, a 3/8" ss locknut cost thirty seven cents...


OK. I miss those days too.

LOL, sat night live hasn't been funny in two decades!
And I remember telephones with no rotary dial where you picked them up and an operator came on and said; "Number Please."
