Do we not talk about BDSM anymore in this forum?

It's rare considering this is the "off topic" forum.

When people want to talk about bdsm, they go to all the other forums where it would be on topic.

We need prayer in schools, but it has been thrown out and now look what has happened?  It still doesn't mean it will change things, but it is a good foundation for anyone.

Another "World's declining, those darn kids today"  when will romanticizing the past stop?

I know I know...never.

I don't have a problem with believing in God but I do have a problem with religions.

WingedMercury -> RE: prayer in schools (4/25/2007 8:13:35 PM)

There is also the placebo effect. Why don't you start a new religion to worship the placebo?

I guess it comes down to "is logical 'better' than illogical". If you think illogicality is 'better', then we have reached the bedrock of our disagreement. There is little more to discuss.

Logic often has little to do with the way people live their lives, and that does not only apply to religion.

You are endorsing that we don't act logically? What sadness! Join with me. Campaign for the brain!
The way people live their lives is usually based on what will maximise their own comfort. This is usually achieved rationally/logically (eonomists, for instance, model according to the "rational man"). A lot of people act irrationally, and that is what I am railing against.

Love is irrational. Kindness is irrational. I gain nothing but a warm feeling when I buy a homeless man a meal. You can say it's selfish, but I lose that money to put towards a new CD. In this way, I am all for irrationality for it brings me more happiness then the cold and unfeeling mistress that logic is. You may have her all to yourself.

There is nothing illogical about kindness. I think you have missed the plot. I give about $AUD30,000 pa (just under actually) to charities. I don't find that illogical. I get satisfaction from it, and I hope others do too.

With all that scientifice reasoning, poor old AquaticSub will still be immersed in holy water.
There are a lot of  words in your post, aSlavesLife, and I commend you for it. Most people would have just settled for an insult.

I see you have no interest in actual debate. I take my leave of you now. Thin insults are pathetic excuses for science.

Thanks for the chat. I thought all that scientific stuff might deal you a mortal blow. Where was the insult? You have never been immersed in holy water?

Being able to reference history makes you a well-rounded person, more intelligent, and a more desirable mate.

OMG...you made me laugh so hard.  Seriously - history makes you better looking to your mate?  Is their IQ less than 60?  "Wow, beautiful, you are tho thmart!  That History makesth your hair so purty!"

I prefer partners with an interest in learning. Ignorance, particularly willful, is a complete turn-off. If you can not carry on a thoughtful conversation that stimulates my brain, you aren't worth my time. Having a basic, working knowledge of world history helps that tremedously.

Top 10 slogans of the century:
  1. Diamonds are forever - just like history (DeBeers)
  2. Just do it - learn history(Nike)
  3. History - The pause that refreshes (Coca-Cola)
  4. History - Tastes great, less filling (Miller Lite)
  5. We try harder - to learn history (Avis)
  6. History - Good to the last drop - just like bombing in WWII (Maxwell House)
  7. History - Breakfast of champions. (Wheaties)
  8. Does she ... or doesn't she (know her history)? (Clairol)
  9. When it rains it pours - just like Hurricane Floyd in 1999(Morton Salt)
  10. Where's the beef? (If you know your History...cattle are raised in the Midwest...)(Wendy's)

Believe it or not, some of us do want someone that can talk somewhat intelligently about history. They do not need to hold a degree in the subject, but personally, if someone was completely unaware of history they would not even get a date with me, and yes I talk to them about certain things to know if they understand just the basic outline of what happened in the last 200 or so years at least in this country.

Are you inviting me to come to stay with you in Arizona? That would be good, and I thank you. I will be in US again later this year, and I will be going to the Grand Canyon again - one of the wonders of the world and you can stand and gaze of millions of years of change. I have not seen much of AZ, only that part between Las Vegas and the canyon, but enjoying Route 66 and Flagstaff. Phoenix and Tucson would be of interest, though I have always thought they could be described as "god forsaken". But I would need a smoke free room.
Certainly on my travels around the South Eastern states, New Mexico, Louisiana, Florida and so on, I was amazed and slightly distressed at the extent of the religious fundamentalism. The amount of money the religious right contribute to election funds, for instance, also give the impression that they wield a lot a power.
I am not sure how much you have travelled around USA, but I can tell you there is amazing contrasts between, say, CA, WA, MA, NY and the "red" states.

By all means, please do let Me know when you are visiting this bastion of "god forsaken" territory.  Why is it "god forsaken" in your opinion, anyway?  And you will not have any problem finding your "smoke free" room.  I am the one who has the problem finding a room in which I may smoke.
I love the Grand Canyon Myself, and I haven't had an opportunity to visit  "God's beautiful work"  in some time.  LOL  If that is a veiled way to get Me to cop to the fact the mankind did not come into being until 6,000 years ago you failed!  I have never believed that, but it doesn't take away My faith that there is an "Intelligent Design".  That may be a hard concept for you, but it is true nonetheless.  And...Gasp... it is not an unusual concept.  It can be dangerous, WingedMercury, to make such assumptions and paint everybody with the same brush.
Red states have much less to do with fundamental Christianity and much more to do with personal freedoms and the personal responsibility that goes with it.  It is easy to make that error, as many in this country also do, that the only reason certain states are "red" is because we are all religious fanatics.  I am a spiritual person, and I do believe in God (and Jesus Christ), but I do not vote based upon religious beliefs.  Neither do most of the people I know.
Render unto Caesar, and all that.  I just prefer to render much less than I am being forced to render, and I try to vote accordingly.  Some day, that might even work!  *Smile*

Whether it is "god forsaken" or not, I don't know. I just saw the spectacular desert country between Las Vegas and the Canyon, and I see from time to time the temperatures at Phoenix and Tucson. I have met a family for Phoenix, and they reckon it is "God's own country".
I think we will leave this now, unless you want to carry on. I was serious about coming to AZ, by the way. I will be in AZ but have no reason to visit the cities, unfortunately.

Religion is always such a heated debate. For centuries there have been wars in the name of religion. How silly really when i have yet to come upon a belief that says ...kill everyone that doesn't agree with this religion. Why would i care who you do or do not worship?
I wouldn't have a problem with my kids praying in school ... i do not limit them to my religion. I do teach them other religions and encourage them to find the one or ones that will work for them. I myself am an electically spiritual person. I take what makes sense from any religion and incorporate it into my own beliefs.
This is what works for me.

I have no problem with moments of silence that can be used for prayer, schools have these too (in case you did not know). A moment of silence does not have the connotation as does a moment for prayer. It honors all beliefs.

Wow. I always wondered what those moments of silence were for. Gives folks a way to pray and stuff. Cool, I guess.

I becha if we didn't have prayers we wouldn't have moments of silence. No way to know, I suppose.

Learning about religion from a kink site, how cool is that?

If you read the Christian Bible, in particularly, Deuteronomy, you will see that Christians are instructed to kill anyone who is not a Christian. Just google Deuteronomy.

This is the fifth book of the old testament. Now I am not a bibical scholar, but it is my understanding that Christians did not exist at time of the writing of this book
