I imagine there are a few but cannot think of any names right off.

Are you planning for another lively debate, NG?

I love the UK, and that album...

As for anarchy, I'm becoming open to the idea it may be a better "system" for a while, until all the sheep in the world wake up, that is...

so, Lady Ellen, please tell me you didn't think I was flaming good Her Majesty's realm ... did you?

Well, I am relieved.  Now then, who wants to start the revolution??

Honestly, when I was 20, I thought we would have had it by now.   I'm still ready, though.

No need for a revolution - voluntary co-operation.

Let all the supporters and excusers of government violence and poverty get on with it, and those who believe in humanity get on with building a mutually co-operative society. No authority, no brainwashing, simply reverting to human co-existence.

NG, you really need to make a trip across the pond to Burning Man
this summer.  Warning, images of nudity and fetish wear on the site,
so not suitable for viewing  at work!

I'd like to see a one month (at least) boycott on all credit card payments, in protest at the high rates they charge. Now that would stick it to the man (whoever he is).

Does this make me a tool of the IKEA corporation though, or should I be looking to go further?

Honestly, when I was 20, I thought we would have had it by now.   I'm still ready, though.

That reminds me, in my short drug experimentation days, not much really pot, shrooms a couple time, and acid a few times.

Anyway we were discussing the connection between people and how they all want the same thing(our theory), and if everybody just started acting on what "we" all knew was a better system, it would happen immediately. So, being on acid, I began to ponder what if it was right then, and everyone was having this realization, simultaneously would we even "trully" act or would anybody.  We pondered on this question with only the levity a acid laced brain can muster.
Well, we didn't open the door and look in the dorm hallways to see if everyone was suddenly self-aware and acting on the universal epiphany. So, we being pretty standard folk, I came to my acid laden conclusion, that revolution is born from great injustice, and must be fanned to push one "out the door". Small infractions, and acting purely on belief, just doesn't seem to cut it. You just can't get enough of like minded people riled simultaneously, to get it going otherwise.

LOL, that is the only good thing about that drug, you can really take hypothetical situations very seriously and analyze them, like it is really happening. Suspension of disbelief, is unnecessary.

Lesson,I learned from that, if one is looking to subjugate a people, do it slowly, and it's doubtful they will rebel regardless of where they end up right and wrong are not enough stimulus to move one when taken in small doses, and if one is looking to raise the people to the point of revolution, create a massive injustice. Small injustices just don't hit critical mass.

As nearly everyone is aware of injustice, and the wrong present in the system, if it was enough to just be "aware" to promote change, then it would have happened already. It takes massive injustice, and they stick pretty close to the recommended daily dosage.

Must be a little LSD still floating around my brain, LOL.

Anarchy is great in theory. But the fact of that matter is as humans it is completely impossible without complete chaos. And some ass hole would always be using force to force others to do what he wanted for self gradification. Violent crime would sky rocket no one would go to jobs With in a year or two we would all starve and there would be no humans left. Most of us aren't savy enough to live off the land, or live without the things we are accostume to like electrity, oil, a super market ext.  We would all die and fast.

I've been kind of sort of maybe moving in that direction for a while now.

I just haven't had time/focus to look at the different varieties of anarchism and really think it through.

I got totally disgusted with liberalism when everyone jumped on "the third way" band wagon and  socialism takes up too many evenings
(appologies to Oscar Wilde).

So lately I've been playing around with populism, left- libertarianism and anarchism.

Libertarians have been called friendly anarchists in the past. The problem with actual anarchy is that it does not stay that way for long. Take a look at the warlords and dictators in Africa for a painful example of what anarchy can generate. Anarchism requires even more personal responsibility than does Libertarianism in order for it to be effective. But we as a race lack the personal responsibility, ethics, and restraint needed to make it work.

Yeah, that's how I always thought of it mainly because I never did any systematic study of the theories underlying the various anarchisms.  So I took anarchy in its literal sense, to mean "without rule" and didn't have much tolerance for it.  But, lately I've been thinking I should at least take it seriously before dismissing it.

Its just not something that's really pressing for my attention right now.

... Oh how I can relate, mi amigo, although it was long, long ago, in a galaxy...etc.

I really am enjoying this thread.  I got a big kick out of NeedToUseYou's post starting out that way, but also can totally relate (oh, god.... "totally relate", like wow, man!).

Still, a couple points to add.  I like LadyEllen's suggestion of a one-day boycott of darn near anything.... as a way to show how much the herd could move in a different direction, if only they admitted to themselves that the wolves are in charge...

I think that anyone interested in the concepts outlined in most of the preceding threads would find the writings of (obviously) Thoreau, as well as John Stuart Mill and Jose Ortega y Gosset to be of interest and value, as they all contribute to the ideal of an individual's participation in society's direction.

IMO, the value of anarchy is in its temporary nature.  Whatever our next social evolution is, it is unlikely to be a smooth transition.  A sharp attitude adjustment is called for.

Trouble with all this anarchy talk is that I've gotten to that point in life where, while the world sucks, I'm not sure that whoever rises out of the anarchy would be any better.  Look at Putin, as an example of the grand opportunity, now lost.

I ramble.  Let me make way for more great minds.

Anarchy is a lovely idea, but it seldom works very well in practice.  The Amish demonstrate this very well.  A person needs to build a barn, they cannot do it alone, they need a social fabric to make it happen.

There is a Xhosa word, Ubuntu - "I am because we are", or "People are people because of people."

Which basically makes the point that nobody exists by themselves, what defines a human is their interaction with other people.

I'm an anarcho-capitalist- in the tradition of von Mises, Friedman, Lysander Spooner...et all. Voluntary relationships only, non-agression principle, and competition.
