You do realize that the vast majority of people receiving funds for those in need really need it. Those trying to bilk the system are not as common as some would believe.

In the late 80s early 90s there was this total over reaction to "welfare mothers" with them being represented as lazy Black women with 10 kids with different fathers, pushing out one baby after another just to get more money and more food stamps and a larger apartment in the Hood in a project.

The "average" welfare mother is white, has 2 or 3 kids with the father that she more often than not had married. She more often than not was left without spousal or child support and had no marketable skills. She further usually remained on the government roles for 18 months and never had more kids on public assistance... but the image that was sold was vastly different than that.

I know this because it has been a major field of my studies as an undergraduate. I care a great deal about this issue because I had to go on public assistance after I was left in that position for a short period of time... and it was a degrading experience. I did not receive regular child support until this last year.

I kind of agree with ya Krissi. My brother is one of those so called disbled people. He got the state to give him disability claiming he heard voices..which I believe everyone does at some point...but he also claims he's a fairy..not the gay kind, the tiny little ones with wings. Damn this pisses me off.

So many people abuse the system. I am one who is actually legally disabled...I have mri's, xrays and all sorts of documnets to prove so. I would much rather work to earn my money, but noone will hire me. I have tried for years to get a job.

My sister, is in almost as bad a shape as I am. She can't walk without assistance, unable to do normal household chores, can't sit or stand more than 15 minutes at a time, yet....she is unable to get disability. Why? Cause there are so many people out there now who draw from the states, claiming disabled, yet running around doing all sorts of things they're not supposed to be able to do.

Sometimes i'd just like to shoot all the fakers out there.

Edited to add: One thing Krissi, While I hope you didn't actually me to....you made it sound like everyone on disability are fakes. Maybe you should have reworded it a bit. I do understand the flustrations in something like this...but to put everyone in the same catagory without knowing, just kind of wrong hun.

The person riding the bus for so long for instance...may very well be disabled, but yet have a valid reason for doing so. People working while on disability....my mother is one of those people. But if she didn't work, there wouldn't be enough money to pay for the medicines that help to keep my father from having serious problems due to his diabete, blood pressure and numerous other things...here recently, an infection in his already removed leg.

Just try to be a little more careful on how you words things next time hun.

Unfortunately I received a phone call and forgot to finish blocking before the last comment that was made. Grumbles, and at the same time perhaps it was fortunate.

Krissi, I do not think I am the center of your Universe, those are your children. I do however think you were hurt by what happened between us and instead of being mature about it you continue to attack me. Your claim that this was a random generalized comment does not hold validity with me nor will it with many others that know us or about the things that have happened.

Too many know I am DISABLED. Too many know I have just returned from a trip where I took a long bus ride, BTW you were wrong, the ride was actually 17 hours, but the longest without being able to get off the bus was only 3 hours. So I was able to get up and stretch my back and legs every so often so I am not in a lot of pain, some but not a lot. Too many also know that I had to shovel my car out of a great deal of snow this last winter. I had little choice and they know I was laid up because of it.
So, any one that truly has been around for a while and are friends of mine or yours and has known the situation will know that you are not stating a generalized rant, but a personal attack, as in your opening statement you pointed me out directly in the comments about the person riding the bus and the snow shoveling.

If you wish to claim otherwise then you are just proving to all the others that you are a liar as well as a drama-queen.

Krissi, I just want it to end. Period. I want no more comments from you about me, concerning me, to me, etc.
I will not even post a response on one of the games if you are the person before me, I want contact between you and I to cease completely.

You once said you were happy I had found someone, but in another forum when I made the comment about returning and how happy I was, your next post stated how you thought you were going to vomit. I at first thought perhaps you had been partying too much or something, but after reading this thread I now wonder if it has to do with my being happy. I am happy, and Krissi, I would NOT have been happy with you. You have lied and manipulated too many times and I will never forgive that.

So end this now. I have, I have now done the blocking. I finished it before making this post. I now have you blocked everywhere. That is the way it will remain, I will NOT restore you to my friends. Not after this. I do not wish you well, but only what you deserve, if it be happiness then let that be so, if it does not, then let what you deserve come quickly.

Krissi? My god do you have the training that gives you the ability to look at someone & decide if they have a disability?

It is so offensive/painful when I get glares because I use handicapped parking, I look perfectly healthy walking into the store. It's only when I walk out of the store that it is obvious I'm struggling to freakin walk.
I've been denied 4 times for SSI because I own my home in full.
I cannot work, yet I have to somehow find $1100.00 every damn month for medication. And no, herbs are not a sufficient substitute for my medication.

Not every disabled person walks with crutches, or uses a wheelchair at all times.

It is a shame you phrased the subject line as you did. IMO it made you look bad, and it didn't cover the point you were trying to make. That being the abuse of the system.

when I know them personally then yes, i know they don't have a disability..when they brag about how they get money from the system for notin then yes, i know they aren't disabled.... I realize there are many who are disabled..

Well, it's rather like a British soap opera: the actors aren't gorgeous and all made up; they speak with a regional accent; it's dour and sour and grey; and the main subject is money, as in all soap operas... but small money.

Ok. i been down this road. there were days of pure hell. days 20 hours in bed. litterrally- pain so bad-i wanted to die literally.

I run into this attitude all the time.  Judge no one until you walked a mile in their footsteps. The most precious thing you have is your health.  I usually now reply- "I am retired"- [sometimes adding I have my own business].

The checks cut for disability are not enuff to live on.

Here is where it gets all legalistic. There is partially temporarily disabled. Partailly permanently disabled, partial permanent- and total permanent.

I had to sue. Now keep in mind I worked since age 14, and was fully paid in. So it wasnt a matter of taking from the till- only claiming what I was duly entitled to.  Shortly after I 'won"- I gets a letter saying they did not "know" if I was disabled. Well- THEIR dr found an additional problem- and they then had to pay the surgery. It was a blessing as I was loosing use of my one hand.  So now a panel of 3 judges fully concur that i am. case closed.

I get attitude from distant family and folks. Part of me can laugh it off.  At times I get mad. I recall an 80 year old man calling the police on me for parking in a disabled spot. Well- duh- it is on my license plate. He did not see the blue hanging thing on mirror and assumed i wasnt to park there. im sure he looked silly when he called.

To be legally disbled you must have a dr fully back your claim. Then a SS dr must concur. DRS do not want to fill out paperwork and give depositions they want to practive medicine-= so finding a dr to back you is difficult.

On the one hand being disabled one is shorted out of some life. on the other- you can enjoy some things that you did not when wrking 50-60 hours a week.

My one brother thought back pain- yeah right. then he threw his back out- and went thru the 6 weeks physical therapy. He told me he had no idea.

One clue to tell if someone is truly disabled. They wont exxegerate their pain, they wont minimalize anothers pain levels. There is a certain subcuure all until itself.

On on hand Im glad to be out of rat race. On the other- it would be nice to have no pain- and to have a real life.

I have a good image of women on welfare -- I worked with them.  They ate better and drove a better car than I did.  You don't make a ton of money on public assistance, but when you add food stamps, government housing, medicaid and tax free income from working under the table, it's not a horribly bad existence, not from what I saw.  Many of these women didn't want to get (real) jobs because they would be giving up a lot.  I didn't approve of what they were doing, but I kept my mouth shut and smiled and helped them because it was my job to do so.

It's really thoughtful how non-disabled people are able to look at us and just pass judgement. I worked and paid in since I was 14, also. I., too, had to sue to get it. All the while, there are cases all around me...like the 18 year old who got it for dyslexia, or the mentally retarded couple and their 3mo baby who are collecting no questions asked-none of whom have ever worked or paid into the system. As I await the outcome of the court case, my house is in danger of foreclosure, receiving shut offs on electricity, etc.Ever try to raise support a family of 5 when you can't work? I admit there are fakes using the system ( I can name 15 out of personal experience), but a bunch of "holier than thou" people loudly proclaiming "Duh, I can't see you're disabled:" to suit their agendas or personal predjuices don't contribute anything positive to the debate, indeed, they often hurt those truly in need.

You knew that these women were working under the table? They told you this? Did they inform you of how much their public assistance worked out to be? Did you make these assumptions (as my own sister used to in serving welfare mothers in a pediatric office) based upon the car they drove and jewelry they wore?

One is allowed to keep a car on public assistance, they are allowed to keep a certain amount of jewelry (which jewelry depreciates once one steps out of the jewelers with it). Most of the welfare mothers I have spoken with (which in my research was quite a few), had cars before they got on the rolls, and had other items beforehand. Public housing and medical are things a mother can get even when she works, and the only thing she is giving up is foodstamps and cash aid.

I have done a great deal of research in this area, enough to consider expanding it in my graduate level work.... there is a domino effect that leads most women to welfare. They are usually raised by a single parent, they have no real support system, the father does not pay his child support reliably, often there is an illness that leads to a lack of employment (of herself or a child that she is responsible for)

A very small percentage ever have more babies while in the system.

Now we could sit here and talk about ancedotal evidence, but the fact of the matter is this: the average welfare mother before welfare reform was married with between 2 to 3 kids, left without support, had no marketable skills, and remained on the rolls for approximately 18 months before becoming employed... Go single working moms!

I have been in the above situation, my ex left me with 5 dollars, nothing but two weeks of clothing because I was in another state when he began playing games with our marriage. I had an infant I was nursing. I was working fulltime soon after we split up, but had to use medical insurance because none of the jobs in my area offered it. My son had asthma. I have never been in public housing in my life, it is not available for most welfare moms that live in rural areas, and most of them do live in rural areas, most are white too.

I worked with them, I knew what was going on, actually in some cases I knew more than I wanted to.
No, I did not know how much money they made all total, with the medicaid, public assistance, public housing, food stamps, plus their jobs.  Actually I tried not to care about their personal lives.  I did my job, I left their issues to their counselors.

But regardless - bringing your personal drama to the discussion groups in this manner makes you look just as bad as the person you are trying to publicly humiliate.
