Well, his men entered it.  Three years later he's still in the process of "capturing" it.

John,
But you leave yourself open to an issue. If President Bush used the same "burn down the mission", mentality in Iraq he would have turned the desert into glass.

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together."

- Farewell Address of Republican President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Wasn't he a person uniquely qualified to know what he was talking about? And what do you suppose he would make of american politics today? Personally, I think he's responding to ideas from Orwell - the rise of a powerful elite bent on creating a permanent state of war primarily because of the potential profits to be made.

Well, well well, here is something we can all stand and applaud. Most of us I imagine, have been harboring the misconception that it takes a man or at least a person with intestinal fortitude to oppose and post against another by addressing the one you post against.. Sort of confronting them face to face.. Well we were all wrong. here we have the proof that the courageous don’t even mention by name those whom they oppose but slyly attempt to slide a poisoned pen into their opponents ribs from behind and then hiding again....

I have news for you boy.... Your poison pen underhanded techniques

Whoa, IB, my fellow award winner, incognitoinmass hasn't hesitated to address people directly all the time. You've gotta realize that for us Bush supporters, there's a whole lotta you Bush bashers out there. He could be mentioning names forever if he had to address each one of you by name. I don't think he had any underhanded motive in not addressing you and some others by name. I do the same thing sometimes when I hope to cool down the debate a bit -- sometimes I think some people are more likely to listen.

And of course, he also happens to be right, and you happen to be wrong, but the issues are beside the point ...

I'm not leaving myself open, I opposed going in from the start.

here's an idea...let those idiots that are in power duke it our in a ring, no holds barred. if we did this, maybe more innocent people would go off and die on foreign soil. otherwise...i still think that we should have a no-nonsense attitude and arm all our missiles and have them on constant readiness...if we're gonna die for a spot of land...let's do it BIG...it's time the world either puts up or shuts up and stop all this killing a little at a time...LET'S GO OUT WITH A BANG!

Actually Mod3 old bean,

I always though that the late Sir Winston Churchill made a number of perfect speeches and if he didn't then no one was smart enough to challange him about them when he was in office..

I was  referring to our current so called leader in regard to perfect speeches. But you are correct there have been several that have made impressive, moving speeches.

It is a shame the current budget can not afford the  President a better author. Maybe Ron could volunteer as speech writer, now there is something I might tune in to see.

**on a side note regarding my age, you're as old as you feel. Somedays it's 95 and others it is 30'ish ;-)

Been thinking about it Mod 11, There is one speech which for me stands out and that’s The Gettysburg Address by Abraham Lincoln. Surely that was one perfect speech?…..

 The Gettysburg Address

What an arogant ass you are.. If you bothered to actually read the entire post you would have seen that I commented that this was the second time he has done this... You assumed it was here and pertaining to this thread It was in fact on an entirely different matter and before the start of this thread. Not that it is of any business of yours. As for you disagreement and final statement, it is what I have come to expect of you.. I am in a possition to know what I was talking about regarding Multinationals both here in Australia and in the USA. I still have security access to many documents and discussions of which in the past I have attended.. As far as I am concerned, you and I have nothing further to say. I'm done with you..

How I real feel about the situation in the US? Like a Roman must have just before the Visigoths came to visit. Instead of the Coliseum, I've got the Internet. (Thank you Al Gore-or are you going by 'Oliver' nowadays?) I have A full belly, a home, even a slave!

You should be feeling like a Roman just before Julius Ceasar crossed the Rubicon after which Rome went from a republic to a dictatorship.  I certainly feel that way about the UK.

I think you need a refund from that charm school. I did read your entire post. I chose to ignore part of it because it was irrelevant to the point I was making -- that people have different reasons for not mentioning the person they're talking about. As far as my point went, it didn't matter if he'd done it once or thirty times. You're quick to insult.

The arrogant ass here is the one making statements about classified documents that the rest of us can't see. Sorry if I don't take your conspiracy theories on faith. Do multinationals try to take unfair advantage of situations, and do governments sometimes let them? Well, if multinationals and governments are made up of people, then that scandal must happen at some point. Whether it's more than an occasional scandal is not something to be believed without evidence. Are the classified documents evidence of single instances or vast conspiracies controlling governments? Give proof or be ignored.

As a matter of courtesy, I've responded to you even after you've insulted me. I'm beginning to see that it's not worth it. I hearby hand back to you the Clusterfuck award. You clearly deserve it.

I think my post at 4:08 p.m. on March 22 (#21 at the top of page 2 in this thread  -- to see it just click on "(in reply to DelightMachine)" at the bottom of this post) was too harsh against IronBear, and if I had to do it all over again, I'd post the same opinion, but not in language that harsh. And for that harsh tone, there and in subsequent posts in this thread, I apologize, IronBear.
